Joern Utzon was always in favour of using large hollow panels of plywood that could curve and reflect sound. Acousticians on the other hand, recommended the ceilings be made of solid material.\r\rUtzon also held notions of the ceiling being visible through the glass walls, so that the relationship between the inner and outer shells could be seen. He likened it to a walnut shell and the kernel within; the two might have very different shapes, yet be very much in harmony. \r\rHowever, this original design altered radically when the change in the purpose of the Concert Hall was implemented after Utzon\'s resignation. Although materials similar to those Utzon wanted were used, the ceiling panels are still a very different shape from what he originally intended.\r \rThe ceiling is made of plywood with a White Birch veneer. There are 1750 separate plywood panels, with over 50 000 curves. As each panel had been taken from White Birch log, each one had to be matched up during the construction phase to guarantee a uniform appearance.\r\rThe panels are designed specifically to promote the best sound possible. This takes into account the many lighting positions dotted throughout the ceiling, and the air-conditioning ducts placed at the bottom of the vertical section of the panels. \r\rAs part of the Concert Hall\'s maintenance program, the laminate on the ceiling panels has been refurbished a number of times over the years. This maintains the Concert Hall\'s appearance and acoustic qualities.\r";
