Originally, Utzon had wanted the platform and steps to be supported by columns, but later changed his mind, visualising the platform and the Car Concourse as much more dramatic without visible supporting structures. He asked Ove Arup and Partners to design a self-supporting platform and steps, and they responded with a revolutionary design of beams which would form a huge structural system as well as provide a canopy for the Concourse. \r\rThe beams contain steel cables, which act as ties, and once these steel cables were pulled tight, the beams have the necessary strength to support the platform. After these beams were set, tests were conducted by placing considerable weight on the platform and the steps in order to ensure there was adequate strength. As extra support, additional concrete footings were built at the base of the stairs.\r\rAfter extensive testing was done on stress points, the engineers arrived at the idea of uniquely constructed folded plate beams to maintain structural integrity. There are 47 beams each with a width of 1.83 metres. Each beam began in a shape resembling the letter T, then gradually split open at the top of the T and altered in shape to resemble more the letter U. These were placed one in front of the other across the podium, so that as the beam finished in a U-shape, the next beam matched it in a U shape and then narrowed to form the T. As a result, a beam was created that would not only provide adequate support, but would also be aesthetically interesting. \r";
