  9. File-Ex adds file management functions like Find, Copy, Delete, 
  10. Rename, and MakeDir to the Open and Save dialogs of Windows
  11. applications automatically. File-Ex also enlarges file dialogs
  12. to any size desired, adds Recent and Favorite file/folder lists,
  13. and allows long file names to be used with 16-bit applications.

  16. If you have just installed File-Ex and are reading this from 
  17. the Notepad program, try it out now by selecting File from the 
  18. menu, then Open.  You should see buttons and the 'Recent...' 
  19. and 'Favorite...' lists at the bottom of the Open dialog,
  20. and the dialog should be larger to allow more files to be listed.
  21. (The default is still fairly small -- it can be as large as the 
  22. screen if you like.)

  24. If you need help, click the 'File-Ex' button, and then the 
  25. Help button from that dialog.  
  26.  
  27. File-Ex runs as a taskbar tray icon in Windows 95 -- you should
  28. see a small File-Ex icon at the far right of the taskbar.  Right-
  29. click on this for the main menu, or double-click on it to bring
  30. up a dialog with configuration, help, & option functions.

  36.                     SOME IMPORTANT NOTES
  37.  
  38. There will be cases where File-Ex causes problems with a dialog,
  39. particularly in the placement of special controls added by an 
  40. application, due to File-Ex resizing and enhancing the dialog.
  41. Such issues are unavoidable due to the wide variety of program
  42. designs, but there is a way to work around most problems.
  43.  
  44. To fix this (and other problems, including possible fatal errors),
  45. you should be familiar with disabling File-Ex functions for specific
  46. application dialogs.  Please refer to the Help file for details.
  47.  
  48. If you see anything unusual in the operation of File-Ex, or if
  49. it does not seem to work as expected, please visit our web site's

  53. ** MS Office 97 users (Word, Excel, Access): While these programs have
  54. similar functions to File-Ex, we have pre-trained File-Ex for them
  55. so that their use is consistent with other programs.  If you prefer
  56. the original/standard dialogs, you may easily configure File-Ex to
  57. not replace the original dialogs.  Go to "Configure Applications..."
  58. and select the appropriate dialog entry, and click "Edit".  Then
  59. check the radio button "Add File-Ex button" and uncheck the boxes
  60. for "Initially hide original" and "Automatically Open/Close File-Ex".

  67. Our freeware program "Delayer" is also included with this package.

  69. While Delayer can be used for other purposes as you like, it was
  70. included here to combat a problem caused by some programs that
  71. prevent File-Ex from working.  This problem happens when some 
  72. other programs (such as Excite's "Direct" program) run after or
  73. at the same time as File-Ex, typically during Windows start-up.

  76. notes about using Delayer.

  82. ** Important note for upgrading from the Windows 3.1 version **
  83.  
  84. The File-Ex Setup routine will not overwrite a FILEEX.DAT file
  85. if it already exists in the program directory -- this is to avoid
  86. erasing your trained applications when upgrading.
  87.  
  88. However, if you used the Windows 3.1 version and install the Win95
  89. version in the same directory, this will prevent the new FILEEX.DAT
  90. file from being installed.  Applications trained in Windows 3.1
  91. will not be recognized in Windows 95, so this is a problem.
  92.  
  93. To avoid the problem, either delete the old FILEEX.DAT file before
  94. installing the Win95 version, or install the Win95 version to a
  95. new directory.
  96.  
  97. (Note: It is not necessarily recommended to do a Complete Removal 
  98. of the old File-Ex, since this will also delete file histories and 
  99. configuration preferences.)

  151. File-Ex will work with any version of Windows 95 or Windows 98
  152.

  156. Do NOT install this version of File-Ex if you run Windows NT!
  157. There should be an NT version of File-Ex available soon.

  164. Installation
  165. ------------

  167. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, please read the
  168. 'Overview' section in the Help file after installation.

  171. To install File-Ex, run SETUP.EXE from Windows:
  172.  
  173. 1. From the Start Menu, select Run...
  174.  
  175. 2. In the Command Line box, type d:\path\SETUP, where 'd' is 
  176.    the letter of the drive and 'path' is the directory where 
  177.    the File-Ex files are.
  178.  
  179.    For example:
  180.      C:\FILEEX\SETUP
  181.  
  182. 3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  183.  
  184. 4. After File-Ex installation is complete, it will need to 
  185.    validate some files.  This will happen automatically the 
  186.    first time File-Ex is invoked, so you don't need to do 
  187.    anything special for this to happen.
  188.  
  189. 5. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, open the Help file 
  190.    and read through the Overview sections.
  191.

  193. Technical information on installation
  194. -------------------------------------
  195. The installation procedure does the following:
  196.  Copy appropriate files to the Program and Data directories.
  197.  Add a File-Ex group with appropriate icons.
  198.  Add File-Ex to the startup group.
  199.  Verify that the operations succeeded.
  200.  Run File-Ex if requested.
  201.  Run notepad to display the readme.txt file if requested.
  202.  
  203. When File-Ex is actually invoked for the first time (through a
  204. File/Open or File/Save command, or by automatically loading 
  205. File-Ex), it validates the information files (fileex.hlp, 
  206. readme.txt, order.txt).  This ensures that File-Ex cannot be 
  207. modified and re-distributed with different company contact/order
  208. information.

  211. What files should be where, after installation

  213. These files should be in your File-Ex program directory :

  230. The file FILEEX.DAT will be copied to the 'Data' directory.  
  231. (This is usually the same as your Program directory, but may 
  232. be different, for instance, in a network environment where the 
  233. Program directory is shared.  The FILEEX.DAT file should be in
  234. a place not shared by users, similar to INI files.)

  236. These files are not copied anywhere, and are not needed by 
  237. File-Ex after setup:
  238.   SETUP.EXE
  239.   FILE_ID.DIZ
  240.   VENDINFO.DIZ

  242. The files COMMEX.INI and FILEEX.INI will be created by the 
  243. Setup program, and will be placed in the Windows directory.

  245. The file FILEEX.LOG will be created in the Windows directory, 
  246. and is useful for troubleshooting.  If everything works after 
  247. installation, this may be deleted.

  251. About the Evaluation Period
  252. ---------------------------

  254. File-Ex is distributed as a shareware trial version.  This 
  255. means that you are free to try it out for 30 days. It will 
  256. be fully functional during that time, so you can try all of 
  257. its functions.
  258.  
  259. After using it for 30 days (not necessarily calendar days, but
  260. when it's been used on 30 different days), some of the functions
  261. will be unavailable.  You will still be able to use the file 
  262. management functions like Copy and Delete, but the recent/favorite
  263. functions, dialog sizing, and some other features will not be 
  264. available unless you register (purchase) the program.

  267. Giving Copies to Friends -- (Please Do!)
  268. ----------------------------------------

  270. Shareware works best when you 'share' it with other people!  If
  271. you like this program, we would appreciate it if you spread it 
  272. around.  Give copies to friends and co-workers, or even upload 
  273. it to your favorite BBS.

  275. Please only distribute the original compressed (.ZIP) file that 
  276. you received File-Ex in.  This is the only way to have the 
  277. complete file set needed to install File-Ex, since the File-Ex 
  278. directory after installation does not contain all of the 
  279. necessary installation files.

  281.   Note: If this is a purchased copy, please DON'T distribute 
  282.   it!  The registered copy contains your registration key file,
  283.   and giving this to someone else is illegal.  Please only 
  284.   distribute the shareware trial version!

  349. the new functions that File-Ex provides, you may need to
