  17. For Windows 3.1, double-click on ConDem31.exe, located in the 
  18. same directory as this readme.

  25. THE CRANE ACTIVITY
  26. Your job is to use the crane to pick up items and drop them into 
  27. the chute.
  28.  
  29. *The items you need to pick up are shown at the bottom of the screen.
  30. *Click on the red arrow buttons to move the crane forward, backwards, 
  31.  left and right.
  32. *When the crane is over an item, the crane's shadow will make the item 
  33.  darker.
  34. *Click on the blue handle to make the crane grab an item. 
  35. *Click on the blue handle again to drop the itme. 
  36. *Click on the green timer button to start the timer and see how 
  37.  long it takes to complete the job. Click on it again to stop it.
  38. *Click on the hard hat button to leave.

  42. COMPAQ COMPUTERS:

  44. To avoid problems when running this demo on Compaq 
  45. machines while using the Compaq wallpaper, we
  46. suggest that the wallpaper be turned off or set to NONE.
  47. To change your wallpaper, go to Control Panel, Display. 
  48. Refer to your Windows documentation for further details.

  50. If you still encounter a problem, try changing your display
  51. settings to 256 colors.

  56. TROUBLESHOOTING AND SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TIPS (WINDOWS 3.1)

  59. If the program is very slow:
  60. ----------------------------
  61. 1. Close any unnecessary applications that may be running.
  62. 2. Be sure you are running Windows in enhanced mode and that the    
  63.    Virtual Memory settings are active. Refer to the performance tips 
  64.    below or your Windows documentation.
  65. 3. Make sure your display setting is at 640x480 resolution 
  66.    and 256 colors. Refer to your system or Windows documentation.

  71. If you experience graphics problems while running the demo,
  72. contact your video card or system vendor to obtain the latest 
  73. version of their video driver.

  78. If you experience sound problems while running the demo, contact your 
  79. sound card or system vendor to obtain the latest version of their 
  80. sound driver.

  83. Screen savers:

  85. If you are running a screen saver in the background and experience
  86. video and sound problems during the program, disable the screen saver
  87. and the problem should be resolved. Refer to your screen saver 
  88. documentation on how to disable the screen saver.

  91. Improving System Performance (Win3.1x):
  92. -------------------------------------

  94. These tips are designed to improve your system's performance:
  95.  
  96. Optimize your hard disk to increase disk access performance
  97. -----------------------------------------------------------
  98.  
  99. With MS-DOS 5.0 or older, you'll need to use a separate utility for 
  100. disk optimization. If you are using MS-DOS 6.0 or newer, use the 
  101. following steps to defragment and optimize your disk:
  102.  
  103. 1.  Exit Windows. At the C:\> prompt, type "defrag C: /f" and  press 
  104.     ENTER. This process will take a few minutes.
  105. 2.  Reenter Windows and run the program.
  106.  
  107. Increase the available memory for running Windows programs
  108. ----------------------------------------------------------
  109.  
  110. Change the SMARTDrive cache size to make more memory available. 
  111. If you have more than 8 MB of RAM, skip this process.
  112. 1.  Go to the Program Manager.
  113. 2.  Select Run from the File menu.
  114. 3.  At the command box, type "sysedit" and click OK.
  115. 4.  The Sysedit window will appear. Click on the Autoexec.bat window to
  116.     bring it to the front.
  117. 5.  Locate the line that shows smartdrv.exe and type in the appropriate
  118.     sizes.
  119.      *  If you have 8 MB of RAM, add 1024 1024. Your SMARTDrive setting
  120.         should look like this: smartdrv.exe 1024 1024 (you have typed
  121.         in 1024 1024).
  122.      Note: Leave any other options on the smartdrv.exe line as they are
  123.      set.
  124.      For example:
  125.      (before) smartdrv.exe /q      (after) smartdrv.exe 1024 1024 /q
  126. 6.  If you've made changes, select Save from the File menu.
  127. 7.  Select Exit from the File menu.
  128. 8.  Exit Windows and restart the computer.

  131. Set up virtual memory to give Windows more memory
  132. -------------------------------------------------
  133. (Note: If you are running any disk-compression software, refer to the
  134. software manual or call the software manufacturer for assistance in 
  135. setting up a permanent swap file.)
  136. 1.  Run Defrag as described above.
  137. 2.  Start Windows, go to the Program Manager, and double-click the
  138.     Control Panel icon in the Main group.
  139. 3.  Double-click the 386 Enhanced icon in the Control Panel group.
  140. 4.  Click the Virtual Memory button on the right side.
  141. 5.  Make sure the Size is set to at least 4000 KB if you have 8 MB 
  142.     of RAM. Also make sure Type is set to Permanent.
  143.     If these are not the current settings, click the Change button.
  144. 6.  Under New Settings, make sure the Type is Permanent and the Size is
  145.     set according to #5 above. The bigger the swap file size, the 
  146.     better performance you will have. We recommend setting the size to 
  147.     at least 8000 KB (but not exceeding 16000 KB). This will improve
  148.     your system's overall performance.
  149. 7.  Click OK. Follow the prompt to restart Windows.

  188. The Windows 95 MouseKeys feature disables the numeric keypad control on
  189. the keyboard. If you wish to use the keypad for entering your answers,
  190. MouseKeys must be turned off:

  192. *   Select Control Panel from the Settings menu at the Start button.
  193. *   Double-click the 'Accessibility Options' icon.
  194. *   Select the 'Mouse' tab.
  195. *   Uncheck 'Use MouseKeys', then click the Apply and OK buttons.
  196. *   Activate the keyboard's NumLock key.

  199. Windows 95 TaskBar
  200. ------------------
  201. The Windows 95 Taskbar may interfere with the user's ability to view
  202. graphics, animations and program information in certain activities. 
  203. If you encounter difficulties when the Windows 95 
  204. Taskbar appears on-screen, enable the Taskbar's Autohide feature:
  205.  
  206. *   Click the Start button, then select Settings, then Taskbar.
  207. *   At the dialog box that appears, uncheck 'Always on top' and 
  208.     check 'Auto hide'.
  209. *   Click the 'Apply' button, then the 'OK' button.
  210.  
  211. You also have the option of relocating the Taskbar to different sides
  212. of the display screen:
  213.  
  214. *   Click and hold down the mouse pointer on a blank area of the
  215.     Taskbar.
  216. *   Drag and release the Taskbar on the side of the screen where it 
  217.     causes the least interference.
  218.  
  219. Note: If you need to access the Taskbar or the Start menu at any time 
  220. while the program is running, press CTRL+ESC. To return to the program,
  221. click on the program's display area, or press ALT+TAB until the program's
  222. icon is selected.

  225. Improving system performance(Win95):
  226. -----------------------------------

  228. These tips are designed to improve your system's performance:

  230. 1. Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, then click 
  231.    Properties.
  232. 2. From the dialog box, select the Performance tab.
  233. 3. Click the File System button.
  234. 4. Select the CD-ROM tab. Set the Supplemental cache size to Large.
  235. 5. Match the Optimize access pattern setting to that of your CD-ROM.
  236.      (It should be set to Double-speed or higher.)
  237. 6. Click Apply, then OK. 
  238. 7. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
