1. SaveROM Help
SaveROM 36.2 for the Amiga
by Tim Ocock
All use of this program is at your own risk! Any harm caused to you or your
property as a result of use of this program is not my fault. This program
musnot be used to break any law. If you do so it is your responsibility and
you are acknowledging that I am free from responsibility.
2. Background
This program is intended to read the ROMs of Amiga computers out to files
which may then be used to soft-kick (run the computer with the OS in RAM) the
computer using a program such as MapROM or ReKick (if you don't have an MMU).
The reasons why you may wish to do this are for testing of different versions
of the OS and to get a speed up in the running of the system if the ROM is in
Fast RAM as it is normally faster than ROM. The downside is that you lose
memory equal to the size of the ROM, which is currently 512K, though it is
256K on WB 1.3 and before and may be increased in the future. The normal place
to store the file is DEVS:Kickstart though SaveROM does not impose this on
you.
The program should work with any size of ROM, though it may not in the future
if they drastically change the format of the ROM chip.
It has been tested on the following machines:
Amiga1200 with 4MB RAM, Kickstart 39.106 (512K) and 60MB Hard disk
It should work with any other versions of the ROMs. Currently, it is necessary
to run the program on a remote machine if the ROM of a pre-V36 is to be read.
Please notify me if you succesfully capture the image of any non-512K sized
ROM.
There are some very important legal rules that apply to use of this program
and it is imperative that you read them.
This program is different from the program SaveROM that is part of the
ShapeShifter Mac emulator package. That program does the same job but for
Apple Macintosh computers.
3. Requirements
Any Amiga with Kickstart 2 or above.
This may be fixed so that the 256K ROMs of older machines may be read.
4. Usage
From CLI:
NAME/A : The name of the file that will be created, normally Kickstart
From WB:
A script is provided so that using the tool IconX the script can be run from
its Workbench icon.
Note that it is usual for the process to take some time.
5. Future Enhancements
* Make the program work on any Amiga
* Work with any future size of ROM
* Improve the presentation of this document
* Any suggestions you send me...
