  12.  We thank you for your continuing support of Directory Opus.  After more
  13. than a year of extra development since its original release, Opus 5.5
  14. contains many changes and enhancements over the original Opus 5.  Thanks
  15. to the feedback from many loyal users and a dedicated band of Beta
  16. testers, we are confident that you will enjoy this new enhanced version of
  17. the Amiga world's most popular directory and file management utility.

  19.  With version 5.5, almost every facet of Opus has been examined and
  20. subjected to user scrutiny, backed up by extensive field testing by very
  21. persistent Beta testers.  In fact, Opus 5.5 is more of a new program than
  22. an update.   We believe that this version provides many significant
  23. improvements in both operational power and usability.

  25.  Opus 5 was the first program to attempt to integrate the concept of a
  26. file manager with that of a replacement Workbench.  We have worked through
  27. a number of compatibility problems this caused and this idea has been
  28. greatly extended in Opus 5.5.  We now believe that this is the best method
  29. of using Opus.  Why run workbench AND a file manager when Opus integrates
  30. the two!

  32.  A brief summary of  the most important changes is provided below and the
  33. details have been incorporated into this new manual.

  40. *    A new Icon Action Mode gives all the power of Name Mode but with
  41.      icons.  You can now use buttons and commands with icons.
  42.  
  43. *    Button banks and Listers need no longer be activated first in order
  44.      to see right and middle mouse clicks.  You can select a button
  45.      without first activating the underlying window.
  46.  
  47. *    You may now have borderless Button banks with a sleek minimal dragbar
  48.      instead of a full window border.
  49.  
  50. *    New Filetype-specific pop-up menus allows special menus for icons and
  51.      files.  Through Opus Filetypes you can now add custom menus for
  52.      different types of files and icons.

  54. *    Custom buttons now have a pop-up menu giving access to an extended
  55.      selection of commands for the left mouse button events while
  56.      retaining fixed commands for middle and right mouse clicks.
  57.  
  58. *    Independent HotKeys are now supported and these may be local to Opus
  59.      or operate globally on your system.

  61. *    A new Scripts system allows functions to be executed upon certain
  62.      events including a double mouse click, disk inserted or removed, etc.

  64. *    Custom menus have been improved and multiple user menus are now
  65.      supported.  All menus may now have sub items.

  67. *    WorkBench Replacement Mode  has been enhanced.  Opus 5.5 can now be
  68.      used with complete confidence to replace the standard Workbench.

  70. *    An integrated OpusFTP capability lets you seamlessly access remote
  71.      Internet sites from standard Opus Listers just as if they were local
  72.      directories.

  76. *    A new Automatic Filetype Creator allows you to create and test
  77.      Filetypes with ease.

  79. *    A new font viewer is now included.  Just double-click on a font to
  80.      view it.

  82. *    Enhanced Name Mode Listers now have field titles, single-click re-
  83.      sorting by fields, plus a new version field which reads the internal
  84.      version information from each file.

  86. *    Listers can now have individual toolbars.

  88. *    New colour remapping of button and icon images provides support for
  89.      'Magic Workbench' and other palette changing systems.

  91. *    A new internal Opus CLI gives immediate access to internal commands
  92.      allowing to you quickly test commands and ARexx scripts.

  94. *    Unwanted drive icons can be selectively hidden from the Opus main
  95.      window.

  97. *    Dynamic drag-selection of icons provides better performance.

  99. *    Enhanced clipboard support provides full cut, copy and paste with all
  100.      string gadgets, and, within Listers, the names of selected entries
  101.      can be copied to the clipboard.

  104.      iconify, and scroll busy Listers.

  106. *    The 'Execute Command' requester now remembers its last 20 commands
  107.      entered.

  114.      picture or pattern.

  121. *    Icon borders and names can be disabled for individual icons.

  123. *    Buttons in banks and toolbars can now use two-frame images.

  128.      extended with new features.  You can now even add you own internal
  129.      commands directly to the Opus command list.
