USING JAWS WITH TERMINAL EMULATORS
1/90:
IBM 3270 Adaptor Card
If you have the IBM 3270 Adaptor card, such as found in the PS2
computers, JAWS version 1.xx will not work properly with the IBM
software. IBM has a nasty habit, perhaps policy, of
circumventing the interrupt "hooks" built into the operating
system. However, the Avatar PA100G software will work fine with
the IBM hardware. This solution is being used by several JAWS
users. The price of the "Entry Level" Avatar software is
currently $100 plus shipping and handling, and it can be ordered
through Henter-Joyce.
Pe-Cox from CXI
This 3270 emulator works fine with JAWS, it is available in
Micro-Channel and PC-AT versions.
The Pe-Cox 1 software with the CXI coax board is compatible with
Irma file transfer software (FTS), according to CXI.
"PC789" by Memorex-Telex, a 3278 emulator, works fine with Jaws,
12/6/89, from Peter Kantasani. Load Jaws first, then PC789. It
may not work if the PC789 is loaded first.
THE AVATAR PA100G, 1/89
When using JAWS and the Synphonix 200 synthesizer or the VoTalker
with the Avatar PA100g for IBM 3270 emulation you must load the
PA100g first, then Sonix and TTS and then JAWS.
You should have a batch file that does the following:
PA3270/h
sonix/i=#
tts
JAWS S200
The "/h" after the PA3270 says load into memory, exit to DOS, and
stay resident.
The "#" in the Sonix refers to the IRQ interrupt line being used
(2, 3, or 7 usually).
If you have a demo JAWS change that last line to "JAWSDEMO S200".
You should also have "device=hotkey.sys" in your config.sys file.
The file named "hotkey.sys" from the Avatar disk should be in
your root directory, or someplace where config.sys can find it.
When all is done correctly a double shift (press both shift keys
at the same time) will invoke the Avatar emulator session.
Pressing double shift again will re-invoke DOS. This is the hot
key, it can bounce you between a main frame session and a DOS
application session.
If JAWS is used with a different synthesizer it can usually be
loaded first, then the emulator can be run. This has the
advantage of leaving the Avatar utilities available to the blind
user. These include the key board map editor, the environment
editor, and macro editor. If the emulator is loaded first, as it
must be with the Symphonix or VoTalker, the Avatar utilities are
not available.
The Avatar will not display more than 80 characters per line. If
you need to have more than 80 characters on the screen it will
scroll horizontally.
Idacom 3278 emulator:
Version 2.0 and 3.x
Your version may not accept alt-insert or alt-delete, so we must
use other keys to perform the insert and delete functions.
Execute the program named "CFIG" which comes on the Idacom disk.
This program allows the user to re-configure the keyboard.
Change the insert and delete functions to a different key
combination, such as alt-I and alt-L.
The Wang WLOC (Wang Local Office Connection), AT model, works
fine with JAWS. However the XT model may not work with JAWS.
WLOC is a plug-in board and software similar to the Avatar 3270
emulator. It connects to the VS100 mainframe via a coaxial
connector and a screw-on connector from the same coaxial cable.
(Actually 2 cables bound together).
The VS100 runs Wang Office, which has E-Mail, Word Processing,
Bulletin board, and user applications. The Word processor puts
up a graphic 250 character whenever the user presses the space
bar. This appears as a little dot between the words, later
versions of JAWS can handle this fine.
IBM SYSTEM 3X EMULATORS:
A product named Access 36 from Mux Labs has been tested and works
fine with JAWS. This is a 5250 terminal emulator, consists of a
plug-in card and software, connects to the System 34-36-38 via a
twin axial cable just like a terminal.
The "Smart Aleck" from DCA is another System 3x terminal package
that will work fine with JAWS, but only if you can get version
1.5 or earlier. The version 1.7 does not work.
The Mux Labs 5250 emulator works fine with Jaws. Call us for
more info and prices on this product. We have the manual on disk
also. This emulator works on IBM System 36-38 and the AS400.
