- The Welcome folder is used in IBM OS/2 2.00.1, a preloaded OS/2
- system. It can be lost by user error or by using the MAKEINI
- command. The MAKEINI command recreates the desktop for OS/2 2.0,
- which does not have a Welcome folder or any of the included
- utilities. The MAKINI command is issued from the command prompt
- or by pressing Alt+F1 when the system is starting. If you press
- Alt+F1, a new desktop is created under OS!2_21.0_D.

- USING WELCOME.CMD TO RECREATE THE WELCOME FOLDER
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- If you have a modem, you can download the WELCOME.CMD utility
- from the NSC BBS - (919) 517-0001 and remake your Welcome
- folder. After downloading the files to a diskette, do the
- following:
-
- 1. Open an OS/2 Window from the Command Prompts folder.
- 2. Place the diskette containing WELCOME.COM in drive A:.
- 3. Type A: and press Enter to go to drive A:.
- 4. Type Welcome and press Enter. This extracts the
- WELCOME.CMD file.
- 5. Type C: and press Enter to change to drive C:.
- 6. Type COPY A:\WELCOME.CMD C: and press Enter.
- 7. Type Welcome and press Enter.

- The WELCOME.CMD utility runs and restores the Welcome folder.
-
- NOTE: This utility cannot be obtained by the OS/2 Support Line
- help center.

- RECREATING THE WELCOME FOLDER
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- If you cannot download the WELCOME.CMD file, do the following
- procedures to recreate the Welcome Folder.

- STEP 1: Creating the Welcome folder
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 1. Open the Templates folder on the desktop.
- 2. Press and hold the right mouse button to drag a FOLDER
- template to your desktop. Release the mouse button.
- Don't place the new icon on top of another.
- 3. Select the new folder icon to display the pop-up menu.
- 4. Select arrow to the right of Open to display the menu.
- 5. Select Settings to display the Settings notebook.
- 6. Select the File tab and type:

- Path: C:\OS!2_2.0_D
-
- NOTE: C: denotes the drive where OS/2 is located.
- 7. Select the General tab and type:
-
- WELCOME
-
- 8. Close the settings notebook.

- STEP 2: Creating the Welcome & Quick Tour program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 1. Open the Welcome folder.
- 2. Open the Templates folder and drag a PROGRAM template
- to the Welcome folder. The Settings notebook opens
- automatically each time you drag a program template. For
- convenience, leave the Templates folder open.
- 3. Select the Program tab and type:

- Path and file name: C:\OS2\VIEW.EXE
- Parameters: QTOUR.INF WELCOME
- Working directory: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD

- 4. Select the General tab and type:
-
- Welcome & Quick Tour
-
- 5. Close the settings notebook.

- STEP 3: Creating the Tutorials folder
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a FOLDER template to the Welcome folder.
- 2. Open the Settings notebook for the folder (see STEP 1.)
- 3. Select the File tab and type:

- Path: C:\OS!2_2.0_D\WELCOME
-
- 4. Select General tab and type:
-
- Name: Tutorials
-
- 5. Close the settings notebook.
-

- STEP 4: Creating the DOS User program Folder
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Open the Tutorials folder.
- 2. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Tutorials folder.
- 3. In the Program Settings notebook, type:
-
- Path and file name: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\DOSUSER.EXE
- Parameters: D
- Working directory: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD

- 4. Select the Session tab and ensure that DOS full screen is
- selected.
- 5. Select the General tab and type:

- DOS User
-
- 6. Close the settings notebook.

- STEP 5: Create the System Overview program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Tutorials.
- 2. In the Program Settings notebook, type:
-
- Path and file name: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\SYSOVER.EXE
- Parameters:
- Working directory: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
- 3. Select the Session tab and ensure that DOS full screen is
- selected.
- 4. Select the General tab and type:
- System
- Overview

- 5. Close the settings notebook.

- STEP 6: Create the Application Installation Overview program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Tutorials folder.
- 2. In the Program Settings notebook, type:

- Path and file name: C:\OS2\VIEW.EXE
- Parameters: INSTALL.INF INSTALLING YOUR APPLICATIONS
- Working directory:

- 3. Select the General tab and type:
-
- Application
- Installation
- Overview
-
- 4. Close the settings notebook.

- STEP 7: Create the Tutorial program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Tutorials folder.
- 2. In the Program Settings notebook, type:

- Path and file name: TUTORIAL.EXE
- Parameters:
- Working directory: C:\OS2\HELP
-
- 3. Select the General tab and type:
-
- OS/2 Tutorial
- 4. Close the settings notebook.

- After creating the Tutorials folder, you can arrange the icons
- in the folder and then close the Tutorials folder.

- STEP 8: Creating the Features folder
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a new FOLDER template to the Welcome folder.
- 2. Open the Settings notebook.
- 3. Select the File tab and type:

- Path: C:\OS!2_2.0_D\WELCOME

- 4. Select the General tab and type:
- Features
-
- 5. Close the settings notebook.

- STEP 9: Create the Services and Support program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Open the Features folder.
- 2. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Features folder.
- 3. In the Program Setting notebook, type:

- Path and file name: C:\OS2\VIEW.EXE
- Parameters: SERVICES.INF SERVICE AND SUPPORT
- Working directory: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD

- 4. Select the Genral tab and type:
- Services and Support
-
- 5. Close the settings notebook.

- STEP 10: Create the Your System program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Features folder.
- 2. In the Program Setting notebook, type:

- Path and file name: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\PRESYS.EXE
- Parameters:
- Working directory: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD

- 3. Select the Session tab and ensure that a DOS full screen is
- selected.
- 4. Select the General tab and type:

- Your System
-
- 5. Close the settings notebook.

- After creating the Features folder, you can arrange the icons
- in the folder and then close the folder.

- STEP 11: Creating the Applications folder
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a new FOLDER template to the Welcome folder.
- 2. Open the settings notebook for the folder
- 3. Select the File tab and type:
-
- Path: C:\OS!2_2.0_D\WELCOME
-
- 4. Select the General tab and type:
-
- Applications
-
- 5. Close the settings notebook.
-
- NOTE: Some of the applications that can be in the Applications
- folder are in other sections of OS/2. If you do not want to
- create shadows of these applications, go to Step 15.

- STEP 12: Creating a shadow of the Application Installation
- Overview program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- The icon for the Application Installation Overview
- program is in the Tutorials folder. Create a shadow of this
- application.
-
- Instructions for creating a shadow are in the Master Help Index
- and in Using the Operating System.

- STEP 13: Creating a shadow of the Productivity folder
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The icon for the Productivity folder is in the OS/2 System
- folder. Create a shadow of this application for the
- Applications folder in the Welcome folder.

- STEP 14: Creating a shadow of the Games folder
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The icon for the Games folder is in the OS/2 system folder.
- Create a shadow of this application for the Applications folder
- in the Welcome folder.

- After creating the Applications folder, you can arrange the icons
- and close the folder.
-

- STEP 15: Creating the Configuration Tools folder
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a Folder template to the Welcome folder.
- 2. Open the Settings notebook for the folder.
- 3. Select the File tab and type:
-
- Path: C:\OS!2_2.0_D\WELCOME
-
- 4. Select the General tab and type:
- Configuration
- Tools
-
- 5. Close the settings notebook.
-
- The Configuration Tools folder contains applications that are
- critical your version of OS/2. This is why you need to recreate
- the Welcome folder.
-
- STEP 16: Creating the Create Utility Diskettes program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- 1. Open the Configuration Tools folder.
- 2. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Configuration Tools folder.
- 3. In the Program Setting notebook, type:
-
- Path and file name: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\BOOTDISK.EXE
- Parameters:
- Working directory: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
-
- 4. Select the General tab and type:
- Create
- Utility
- Diskettes
-
- 5. Close the settings notebook.

- STEP 17: Creating the Configure program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- 1. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Configuration Tools folder.
- 2. In the Program Setting notebook, type:
-
- Path and file name: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\CONFIG.EXE
- Parameters:
- Working directory: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
-
- 3. Select the General tab and type:
- Configure
-
- 4. Close the settings notebook.
-

- STEP 18: Creating the Selective Uninstall program
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- 1. Drag a PROGRAM template to the Configuration Tools folder.
- 2. In the Program Setting notebook, type:
-
- Path and file name: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\UNINSTAL.EXE
- Parameters:
- Working directory: C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
-
- 3. Select the Gernal tab and type:
- Selective
- Uninstall
-
- 4. Close the settings notebook.
-

- STEP 19: - OPTIONAL
-
- You may need to update the CONFIG.SYS if an ALT-F1 key sequence
- was used. The following line should appear at the bottom of the
- CONFIG.SYS.
-
- DEVICE = C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\PREL_IMG.SYS
- C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\WELCOME.RGB 5
-

- To edit the file:
-
- 1. Type E CONFIG.SYS at an OS\2 command to start the editor.
- 2. Page down to the bottom of the file and type:
-
- DEVICE = C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\PREL_IMG.SYS
- C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\WELCOME.RGB 5
-
- NOTE: This should appear on one line and not be separated on two
- lines unless the line is too long for the editor and it
- automatically wraps to the next line.

- 3. Select File from the menu bar at the top and then select
- Save.
-
- If asked to choose a file type, select TYPE and then Choose
- the PLAIN TEXT option by selecting the SET button.
-
- 4. Close the editor.
- 5. Type Exit and press Enter to return to the OS/2 command
- prompt.
-
- After rebuilding the Welcome folder, close all the windows on the
- desktop. Shutdown the sytem and make a backup copy of the
- OS2.INI and the OS2SYS.INI files in the OS/2 subdirectory.

- You can copy these files when you start the system from the
- Utility diskettes.
