  11. The Welcome folder is used in IBM OS/2 2.00.1, a preloaded OS/2
  12. system.  It can be lost by user error or by using the MAKEINI
  13. command.  The MAKEINI command recreates the desktop for OS/2 2.0,
  14. which does not have a Welcome folder or any of the included
  15. utilities.  The MAKINI command is issued from the command prompt
  16. or by pressing Alt+F1 when the system is starting.  If you press
  17. Alt+F1, a new desktop is created under OS!2_21.0_D.

  20. USING WELCOME.CMD TO RECREATE THE WELCOME FOLDER
  21. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  22. If you have a modem, you can download the WELCOME.CMD utility
  23. from the NSC BBS - (919) 517-0001 and remake your Welcome
  24. folder.  After downloading the files to a diskette, do the
  25. following:
  26.  
  27.    1.  Open an OS/2 Window from the Command Prompts folder.
  28.    2.  Place the diskette containing WELCOME.COM in drive A:.
  29.    3.  Type A: and press Enter to go to drive A:.
  30.    4.  Type Welcome and press Enter.  This extracts the
  31.        WELCOME.CMD file.
  32.    5.  Type C: and press Enter to change to drive C:.
  33.    6.  Type COPY  A:\WELCOME.CMD  C:  and press Enter.
  34.    7.  Type Welcome and press Enter.
  35.  
  36. The WELCOME.CMD utility runs and restores the Welcome folder.

  38. NOTE: This utility cannot be obtained by the OS/2 Support Line
  39. help center.

  43. RECREATING THE WELCOME FOLDER
  44. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  46. If you cannot download the WELCOME.CMD file, do the following
  47. procedures to recreate the Welcome Folder.
  48.

  50. STEP 1:  Creating the Welcome folder
  51. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  52. 1.  Open the Templates folder on the desktop.
  53. 2.  Press and hold the right mouse button to drag a FOLDER
  54.     template to your desktop.  Release the mouse button.
  55.     Don't place the new icon on top of another.
  56. 3.  Select the new folder icon to display the pop-up menu.
  57. 4.  Select arrow to the right of Open to display the menu.
  58. 5.  Select Settings to display the Settings notebook.
  59. 6.  Select the File tab and type:
  60.  
  61.           Path:      C:\OS!2_2.0_D
  62.  
  63.     NOTE: C: denotes the drive where OS/2 is located.
  64. 7.  Select the General tab and type:
  65.  
  66.                      WELCOME

  68. 8. Close the settings notebook.

  72. STEP 2:  Creating the Welcome & Quick Tour program
  73. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  74. 1.  Open the Welcome folder.
  75. 2.  Open the Templates folder and drag a PROGRAM template
  76.     to the Welcome folder.  The Settings notebook opens
  77.     automatically each time you drag a program template. For
  78.     convenience, leave the Templates folder open.
  79. 3.  Select the Program tab and type:
  80.  
  81.           Path and file name:   C:\OS2\VIEW.EXE
  82.           Parameters:           QTOUR.INF WELCOME
  83.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD

  85. 4.  Select the General tab and type:

  89. 5.  Close the settings notebook.

  92. STEP 3:  Creating the Tutorials folder

  95. 1.  Drag a FOLDER template to the Welcome folder.
  96. 2.  Open the Settings notebook for the folder (see STEP 1.)
  97. 3.  Select the File tab and type:

  99.           Path:     C:\OS!2_2.0_D\WELCOME

  101. 4.  Select General tab and type:
  102.  
  103.         Name: Tutorials
  104.  
  105. 5.  Close the settings notebook.

  108. STEP 4:  Creating the DOS User program Folder
  109. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  111. 1.  Open the Tutorials folder.
  112. 2.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Tutorials folder.
  113. 3.  In the Program Settings notebook, type:
  114.  
  115.           Path and file name:   C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\DOSUSER.EXE
  116.           Parameters:           D
  117.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
  118.  
  119. 4.  Select the Session tab and ensure that DOS full screen is
  120.     selected.
  121. 5.  Select the General tab and type:
  122.

  125. 6.   Close the settings notebook.

  128. STEP 5:  Create the System Overview program
  129. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  131. 1.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Tutorials.
  132. 2.  In the Program Settings notebook, type:

  134.           Path and file name:   C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\SYSOVER.EXE
  135.           Parameters:
  136.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
  137. 3.  Select the Session tab and ensure that DOS full screen is
  138.     selected.
  139. 4.  Select the General tab and type:
  140.                       System
  141.                       Overview

  146. STEP 6:  Create the Application Installation Overview program
  147. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  149. 1.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Tutorials folder.
  150. 2.  In the Program Settings notebook, type:

  153.           Parameters:           INSTALL.INF INSTALLING YOUR APPLICATIONS

  165. STEP 7:  Create the Tutorial program

  168. 1.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Tutorials folder.
  169. 2.  In the Program Settings notebook, type:

  172.           Parameters:
  173.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\HELP

  175. 3.  Select the General tab and type:

  178. 4.  Close the settings notebook.

  180. After creating the Tutorials folder, you can arrange the icons
  181. in the folder and then close the Tutorials folder.

  184. STEP 8:  Creating the Features folder

  187. 1.  Drag a new FOLDER template to the Welcome folder.
  188. 2.  Open the Settings notebook.
  189. 3.  Select the File tab and type:

  191.           Path:     C:\OS!2_2.0_D\WELCOME

  193. 4.  Select the General tab and type:
  194.                       Features
  195.  
  196. 5.  Close the settings notebook.

  199. STEP 9:  Create the Services and Support program
  200. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  202. 1.  Open the Features folder.
  203. 2.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Features folder.
  204. 3.  In the Program Setting notebook, type:

  206.           Path and file name:   C:\OS2\VIEW.EXE
  207.           Parameters:           SERVICES.INF SERVICE AND SUPPORT
  208.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
  209.  
  210. 4.  Select the Genral tab and type:
  211.                       Services and Support
  212.  
  213. 5.  Close the settings notebook.

  216. STEP 10: Create the Your System program
  217. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  219. 1.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Features folder.
  220. 2.  In the Program Setting notebook, type:

  222.           Path and file name:   C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\PRESYS.EXE
  223.           Parameters:
  224.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
  225.  
  226. 3.  Select the Session tab and ensure that a DOS full screen is
  227.     selected.
  228. 4.  Select the General tab and type:
  229.  
  230.                       Your System
  231.  
  232. 5.  Close the settings notebook.

  235. After creating the Features folder, you can arrange the icons
  236. in the folder and then close the folder.

  238. STEP 11: Creating the Applications folder
  239. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  241. 1.  Drag a new FOLDER template to the Welcome folder.
  242. 2.  Open the settings notebook for the folder
  243. 3.  Select the File tab and type:

  245.           Path:    C:\OS!2_2.0_D\WELCOME
  246.  
  247. 4.  Select the General tab and type:
  248.  
  249.                       Applications
  250.  
  251. 5. Close the settings notebook.

  253. NOTE:  Some of the applications that can be in the Applications
  254. folder are in other sections of OS/2.  If you do not want to
  255. create shadows of these applications, go to Step 15.

  258. STEP 12: Creating a shadow of the Application Installation
  259.           Overview program
  260. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  261.  
  262.    The icon for the Application Installation Overview
  263. program is in the Tutorials folder.  Create a shadow of this
  264. application.

  266. Instructions for creating a shadow are in the Master Help Index
  267. and in Using the Operating System.

  270. STEP 13: Creating a shadow of the Productivity folder
  271. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  272.  
  273.    The icon for the Productivity folder is in the OS/2 System
  274. folder.  Create a shadow of this application for the
  275. Applications folder in the Welcome folder.

  278. STEP 14: Creating a shadow of the Games folder
  279. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  280.  
  281.    The icon for the Games folder is in the OS/2 system folder.
  282. Create a shadow of this application for the Applications folder
  283. in the Welcome folder.

  285. After creating the Applications folder, you can arrange the icons
  286. and close the folder.

  289. STEP 15: Creating the Configuration Tools folder
  290. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  292. 1.  Drag a Folder template to the Welcome folder.
  293. 2.  Open the Settings notebook for the folder.
  294. 3.  Select the File tab and type:
  295.  
  296.           Path:       C:\OS!2_2.0_D\WELCOME
  297.  
  298. 4.  Select the General tab and type:
  299.                       Configuration
  300.                       Tools
  301.  
  302. 5.  Close the settings notebook.
  303.  
  304.    The Configuration Tools folder contains applications that are
  305. critical your version of OS/2.  This is why you need to recreate
  306. the Welcome folder.

  308. STEP 16: Creating the Create Utility Diskettes program
  309. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  310.  
  311. 1.  Open the Configuration Tools folder.
  312. 2.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Configuration Tools folder.
  313. 3.  In the Program Setting notebook, type:
  314.  
  315.           Path and file name:   C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\BOOTDISK.EXE
  316.           Parameters:
  317.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
  318.  
  319. 4.  Select the General tab and type:
  320.                       Create
  321.                       Utility
  322.                       Diskettes
  323.  
  324. 5.  Close the settings notebook.

  327. STEP 17: Creating the Configure program
  328. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  330. 1.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Configuration Tools folder.
  331. 2.  In the Program Setting notebook, type:
  332.  
  333.           Path and file name:   C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\CONFIG.EXE
  334.           Parameters:
  335.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
  336.  
  337. 3.  Select the General tab and type:
  338.                       Configure
  339.  
  340. 4.  Close the settings notebook.

  343. STEP 18: Creating the Selective Uninstall program
  344. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  346. 1.  Drag a PROGRAM template to the Configuration Tools folder.
  347. 2.  In the Program Setting notebook, type:
  348.  
  349.           Path and file name:   C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\UNINSTAL.EXE
  350.           Parameters:
  351.           Working directory:    C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD
  352.  
  353. 3.  Select the Gernal tab and type:
  354.                       Selective
  355.                       Uninstall
  356.  
  357. 4.  Close the settings notebook.

  360. STEP 19: - OPTIONAL
  361.  
  362. You may need to update the CONFIG.SYS if an ALT-F1 key sequence
  363. was used.  The following line should appear at the bottom of the
  364. CONFIG.SYS.
  365.  
  366. DEVICE = C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\PREL_IMG.SYS
  367. C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\WELCOME.RGB 5
  368.

  370. To edit the file:
  371.  
  372. 1.  Type E CONFIG.SYS at an OS\2 command to start the editor.
  373. 2.  Page down to the bottom of the file and type:
  374.  
  375.      DEVICE = C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\PREL_IMG.SYS
  376.      C:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\WELCOME.RGB 5
  377.  
  378. NOTE:  This should appear on one line and not be separated on two
  379. lines unless the line is too long for the editor and it
  380. automatically wraps to the next line.
  381.  
  382. 3.  Select File from the menu bar at the top and then select
  383.     Save.
  384.  
  385.     If asked to choose a file type, select TYPE and then Choose
  386.     the PLAIN TEXT option by selecting the SET button.
  387.  
  388. 4.  Close the editor.
  389. 5.  Type Exit and press Enter to return to the OS/2 command
  390.     prompt.
  391.  
  392. After rebuilding the Welcome folder, close all the windows on the
  393. desktop.  Shutdown the sytem and make a backup copy of the
  394. OS2.INI and the OS2SYS.INI files in the OS/2 subdirectory.
  395.  
  396. You can copy these files when you start the system from the
  397. Utility diskettes.
