  8. This document is to inform the service group of problems found
  9. installing OS/2 Warp on the Aptiva, PC 300 and PC 700 machines
  10. that currently have DOS/Windows.  The document has the problem
  11. descriptions and their system fixes or work arounds.
  12.  
  13.  
  14. RAPID RESUME
  15.  
  16. If you have Rapid Resume enabled on your machine, you must disable
  17. it before starting installation.  To disable Rapid Resume:
  18.  
  19. 1.  Start the system.
  20. 2.  Shut down active applications so you do not loose any data.
  21. 3.  Disable Rapid Resume with the Rapid Resume Manager or the
  22.     system Configuration Utility.
  23.  
  24. If you are not sure how to disable Rapid Resume, refer to the
  25. system documentation.
  26.

  28.   DISABLE READ PREFETCH
  29.  
  30. There is a setting in the BIOS to enable/disable Read Prefetch on
  31. the following models of Aptiva machines.  If you do not have one of
  32. the following machines, skip this section.
  33.  
  34.      Model 310 (2144-22P)
  35.      Model 330 (2144-24P)
  36.      Model 335 (2144-25P)
  37.      Model 343 (2144-29P)
  38.      Model 350 (2144-26P)
  39.      Model 510 (2144-62P)

  42. Disabling Prefetch on all Aptiva's from the 310 (2144-22P)

  46. 1.  Start the system.
  47.  
  48. 2.  When the IBM logo is displayed, and a box like the following
  49.     appears in the upper right corner of the screen:

  88. 4.  Highlight IDE Drive Setup and press Enter.

  90. 5. A list of possible hard disks appear.   Highlight each
  91.    hard disk and press Enter to display the settings for the
  92.    disk.  If the following setting appears:

  110.   TRAP 3 WITH IDE CDROM
  111. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  113. Trap 3 can happen on IBM PC 300 Series - 486 Systems , IBM PC 300
  114. Series - Pentium System , IBM PC 700 Series - Pentium Systems and
  115. Aptiva machines with 3.7 meg of memory and an IDE CDROM.
  116.  
  117. The queueing mechanism in the IDE CDROM driver can cause a trap
  118. 3. A fix must be applied to OS/2 to correct this problem.  If
  119. your installation package is from CD, you will be sent a new
  120. Diskette 1 to upgrade the CD-ROM device driver.  If your
  121. installation package is all from diskettes, you will be sent
  122. diskette 2 with the upgrade.  Use the upgraded diskettes during
  123. install.

  127.   THE APTIVA MACHINES 530 (2144-66P) AND 730 (2144-86P)

  131. APTIVA MACHINES WITH THE ARIA SOUND CARD (530 AND 730)
  132. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  133. The Aria sound card needs the promethieus driver for OS/2 and it
  134. is not available until 1995.
  135.  
  136. To allow Windows applications to function with the Windows driver for
  137. the Aria sound card, special care must be taken during the OS/2
  138. installation process.
  139.  
  140. 1.  Select "Advanced" install on the Installation screen.
  141. 2.  Continue answering the installation questions.
  142. 3.  When prompted, remove the diskette from the diskette drive
  143.     and restart the system.
  144.  
  145.     The "Hardware Configuration" screen appears when the system
  146.     is restarted.
  147.  
  148. 4.  Move the mouse to the MultiMedia icon and click the
  149.     left mouse button.
  150.     The SoundBlaser driver is highlighted on the screen.
  151. 5.  Select the Remove push button then select the OK push button
  152. 6.  Continue with the installation.  When the installation is
  153.     complete, the Windows applications can use the Windows sound
  154.     device driver.
  155.  
  156.   APTIVA APPLICATION PROBLEMS
  157. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  158.    After installing Warp on Aptiva machines, there are a number
  159.    of problems with the applications shipped with the machine.
  160.    The problems are being identified and fixes and workarounds
  161.    are listed here.
  162.  
  163.  
  164. 1. The proper icons for some of the applications is replaced
  165.    by the OS/2 standard Windows icon.  This will be fixed in a
  166.    future release of OS/2.  The following information is not
  167.    included in the customer documentation.  Some Windows icons
  168.    are placed in the wrong location and objects get the wrong
  169.    icon.  They are listed below.
  170.  
  171.    Windows Main folder is not created.  The contents the Main
  172.    folder is being put into other folders.
  173.

  185.    Comptons Encyclopedia should be in the Windows MultiMedia
  186.    Folder, but is located in the Windows Programs Folder.

  188.    Multimedia Basics is missing.  Multimedia Basics should be in
  189.    the Windows MultiMedia Folder, executing
  190.    C:\WINDOWS\PS1CDROM.EXE with a parameter of Multimedia Basics
  191.    and a working directory of C:\WINDOWS.  The icon is located in
  192.    C :\WELCOME\MMBASICS.ICO.
  193.  
  194.    The DOS Help object located in the DOS Tools Folder should
  195.    have the icon C:\WINDOWS\DOSHELP.ICO.
  196.  
  197.    The game Solitaire is located in the OS/2 System Folder
  198.    but should be in the WIN-OS/2 Groups, Games Folder.  The
  199.    following are the programs with the wrong icons and the
  200.    location of the correct icons for the objects.

  216. 2. When you start some windows programs, the message
  217.    " RRTSKLST.EXE can not be found" appears on the screen..
  218.    The function is not needed under OS/2, you can ignore the
  219.    message.  If you do not want the message to appear, edit the
  220.    \WINDOWS\.WIN.INI file.  Change:
  221.  
  222.     From: LOAD=RRTSKLST.EXT
  223.  
  224.     To:   LOAD=C:\PS1TOOLS\RRTSKLST.EXE
  225.  
  226. 3. For UNDERSEA ADVENTURE and DISCOVERERS:
  227.  
  228.    a. OS/2 assigns the CD-ROM drive to the next available drive
  229.      letter after the hard file drive letters.  Some applications
  230.      do not have the flexibility to find the drive letter for the
  231.      CD-ROM and must be told where it is.  You need determine the
  232.      drive letter OS/2 has assigned to the CD-ROM.  You can type
  233.      a DIR command for each drive starting with D:  until the
  234.      light on the CD-ROM is on.
  235.  
  236.    b. Edit the following files, changing the CD drive fields from
  237.       E: to D: and the remaining fields from E: to D: in each
  238.       file.  Save each file after making changes.
  239.

  242.              C:\SEA\SEA.BAT
  243.              C:\DISCOVER\DISCOVER.BAT

  245.       Note:  If the address for the SoundBlaster port is a220 in
  246.       the KA.CNF files, it must be changed to a240.
  247.  
  248.     c. Go to the Settings notebook in each program and do the
  249.        following:
  250.  
  251.         1. Point the mouse at the icon and press the right
  252.            mouse button once.
  253.         2. Select Settings on the menu and press the left mouse
  254.            button once.
  255.         3. Change the Path and file name:
  256.            From:
  257.  
  258.            C:\SEA\PS1CDROM.EXE (in the Undersea Adventure)
  259.            C:\DISCOVER\PS1CDROM.EXE (in the Discoverers)

  261.            To: C:\WINDOWS\PS1CDROM.EXE

  263.         4. Select the Session tab.
  264.         5. Select WIN-OS/2 settings.
  265.         6. Select All DOS and WIN-OS/2 settings button.
  266.         7. Select the OK push button.
  267.         8. Set DOS_HIGH to ON.
  268.         9. Set DOS_UMB to ON and save the settings.
  269.        10. Select the button for WIN-OS2 full screen.
  270.  
  271.        11. Close the Settings notebook by double clicking the
  272.            box in the upper left corner of the window.

  274.    Although these applications can now run, they may hang
  275.    the system because the IRQ value is set at IRQ=5.
  276.    The correct value is IRQ=10.  The following files need
  277.    to be changes with a command file that IBM will
  278.    supply.
  279.

  286.    Note:
  287.    Sound currently does not work for the Discoverers application.
  288.    The file C:\DISCOVER\KA.CNF does not properly identify the
  289.    sound driver needed.  Reference to SB16DIG.DRV should be
  290.    changed to give the full path to the driver
  291.    C:\DISCOVER\MISDISC\SB16DIG.DRV.
  292.  
  293.    When exiting Undersea Adventure or Discoverers the initial
  294.    screen requesting the CD-ROM may appear again.  If this
  295.    happens, select cancel to end the application.

  297.  
  298. 4.  Comptons Interactive Encyclopedia
  299.  
  300.    If you are running Comptons Interactive Encyclopedia
  301.    seamlessly and playing a video, when you select the full
  302.    screen button the video expands to full screen and plays
  303.    normally.  When the video finishes, the screen goes black and
  304.    you must restart the system to recover.
  305.  
  306.    If the application is run in full screen session, this problem
  307.    does not happen.  To prevent this problem, do the following:
  308.  
  309.     1.  Point the mouse at the icon and press the right mouse
  310.         button once.
  311.     2.  Select Settings on the menu and press the left mouse
  312.         button once.
  313.     3.  Select the Session tab
  314.     4.  Select the button for WIN-OS2 full screen
  315.     5.  Close the Settings notebook by double clicking the box
  316.         in the upper left corner of the window.

  318.  
  319. 5.  Music Mentor
  320.  
  321.    When playing the Music Mentor, the music and the displayed
  322.    notes can get out of sync.  To prevent this, change the
  323.    MultiMedia settings of Music Mentor:
  324.  
  325.      1. Point the mouse at the icon and press the right
  326.         mouse button once.
  327.      2. Select Settings on the menu and press the left
  328.         mouse button once.
  329.      3. Select the Session tab
  330.      4. Select WIN-OS/2 settings.
  331.      5. Select All DOS and WIN-OS/2 settings button.
  332.      6. Select the OK push button.
  333.      7. Set COM_DIRECT_ACCESS to ON
  334.      8. Set HW_TIMER to ON
  335.      9. Set INT_DURING_IO to ON
  336.     10. Set VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION to OFF
  337.     11. Set VIDEO_SWITCH_NOTIFICATION to OFF and save the
  338.         settings.
  339.     12. Close the Settings notebook by double clicking the
  340.         box in the upper left corner of the window.
  341.  
  342. 6. Reuters - When Reuters (Money Network) is started from the
  343.    icon or from Windows Program Manager, it displays "...not
  344.    enough file handles..."  message. The program cannot
  345.    open or create files.  The README.WRI file recommends that 100
  346.    file handles are specified when running under OS/2.
  347.  
  348.    Do the following to set DOS_FILES to 100 and enhanced mode:
  349.  
  350.  
  351.    a. Point the mouse at the icon and press the right
  352.       mouse button once.
  353.    b. Select Settings on the menu and press the left mouse
  354.       button once.
  355.    c. Select the Session tab.
  356.    d. Select WIN-OS/2 settings.
  357.    e. Select the All DOS  and WIN-OS/2 settings
  358.    f. Select the OK push button.
  359.    g. Set WIN_RUN_MODE to 3.1 Enhanced Compatibility
  360.    h. Set DOS_FILES to 100 and save the settings
  361.    i. Close the Settings notebook by double clicking the
  362.       box in the upper left corner of the window.

  366. 7. Running Disney Software Preview seamless hangs the system.  To
  367.    fix the problem, run the Disney Software Preview program in a
  368.    full screen session.
  369.  
  370.    a. Point the mouse at the icon and press the right
  371.       mouse button once.
  372.    b. Select Settings on the menu and press the left mouse
  373.       button once.
  374.    c. Select the Session tab.
  375.    d. Select WIN-OS2 settings
  376.    e. Select the WIN-OS2 full screen button.
  377.    f. Close the Settings notebook by double clicking the
  378.       box in the upper left corner of the window.
  379.  
  380. 8. Rapid Resume to a partition works if set up properly.
  381.    There is a file called README.TXT in the directory called
  382.    \PS1TOOLS (on Aptivas) or \IBMTOOLS (on the PC 300 and
  383.    700 machines) that describe the steps for enabling Rapid
  384.    Resume to a partition.  Rapid Resume to a file under OS/2
  385.    requires a new copy of PS1PFILE.EXE and PS1PFILE.SCR.  These
  386.    files are on the second diskette you received. Copy
  387.    the two files to the directory C:\PS1TOOLS.
  388.    PS1PFILE.EXE must be run each time the machine is started.
  389.    Edit the file C:\STARTUP.CMD and add the following
  390.    line:
  391.  
  392.            C:\PS1TOOLS\PS1PFILE.EXE
  393.  
  394.    If you have never run Rapid Resume to a file or you add memory
  395.    to your machine, the Rapid Resume file must be set up under
  396.    DOS.
  397.  
  398.    a. Go to DOS.  Close any applications running on your OS/2
  399.       system.
  400.    b. Go to an OS/2 command line and type:
  401.  
  402.             BOOT /DOS
  403.  
  404.    c. Type Y to the question "Do you want to continue?"
  405.    d. When DOS starts, go to a DOS command line and type:
  406.  
  407.            C:\PS1TOOLS\PS1PFILE.EXE
  408.  
  409.    e. To return to OS/2 enter the following command:
  410.  
  411.            C:\OS\BOOT /OS2
  412.  
  413.    Rapid Resume is now ready to use.
  414.  
  415. 9. Do not use the personal Desktop Windows function under
  416.    OS/2.  This function is not supported under OS/2.
  417.  
  418. 10. The following problems are being addressed.
  419.  
  420.    a) Music Mentor gets a General Protection Fault when the "To
  421.       Session" button is pressed.
  422.    b) Plug-in-Play application hangs seamless windows session.
  423.       The Aptiva Custom Tool Plug-in-Play hangs the system
  424.       running in a seamless Windows session when using Alt+Esc to
  425.       switch between sessions.
  426.       c) The Disney Software Preview, runnning under Windows on
  427.       an Aptiva system with OS/2 installed, trys to run the
  428.       'Stunt Island' or 'Disney Animation Studio' demos, the demo
  429.       ends and cause Windows to restart.  When you try to run the
  430.       Stunt Island or Disney Animation Studio demos, on the
  431.       Disney Software Preview running under Windows on an Aptiva
  432.       with OS/2, the demo ends and causes Windows to restart.  A
  433.       message, "A file is missing please reinstall" appears.  On
  434.       an Aptiva without OS/2 installed the demos run normally.
  435.       The demos run a DOS application named DISNEY.EXE under DOS
  436.       and expect COMMAND.COM to be in the root directory.  There
  437.       is a conflict between the operating systems on this file so
  438.       the DOS version of this file is in the DOS directory and
  439.       the OS/2 version of this file is normally in \OS2\MDOS.
  440.       The bug is in the Disney software for insisting that the
  441.       COMMAND.COM be in the root.  However, the DualBoot program
  442.       will be updated to fix this problem.
  443.   d)  The Aptiva Custom Tool, Plug-and-Play, leaves you at
  444.       the OS/2 Desktop after starting the application and running
  445.       its initial DOS program.  Use the Window List or Alt+Esc to
  446.       go back to the full screen Windows session and
  447.       Plug-and-Play.
  448.   e)  When using FAX Voice as an answering machine, messages get
  449.       truncated.
  450.   f)  Comptons Encycolpedia gets a General Protection Fault in
  451.       the vidio while playing animation.
  452.
