  32.     DETAILS OF RESOLUTION
  33.  
  34.     I. Identifying the type of Hardware you have.
  35.  
  36.     IBM PCMCIA DATA/FAX MODEMS
  37.  
  38.     IBM has PCMCIA Data/FAX modem products which could be
  39.     used on the IBM Thinkpad series of personal notebook
  40.     computers. Two of these products are the IBM PCMCIA
  41.     High-Speed Data/FAX Modem and the IBM PCMCIA Data/FAX
  42.     Modem. The IBM PCMCIA High-Speed (14.4) Data/Fax Modem
  43.     has OS/2 2.1 Client (device) Driver support but the IBM
  44.     PCMCIA (2400/9600) Data/Fax Modem was not announced for
  45.     OS/2 2.1 and was not shipped with OS/2 2.1 Client
  46.     (device) Driver support. The way you determine the
  47.     difference between the modems is to examine the front
  48.     of the modem. The High Speed modem has IBM High Speed
  49.     PCMCIA Data/FAX Modem, the Low Speed Modem just has IBM
  50.     PCMCIA Data/FAX Modem.
  51.     The IBM Model Number for the High Speed PCMCIA Data/FAX
  52.     modem is: FC3635. The IBM Model Number for the Low
  53.     Speed PCMCIA Data/FAX modem is: FC3634.

  56.     II. Installing PCMCIA software support.
  57.  
  58.     INSTALLATION PROBLEMS WITH THE IBM  PCMCIA MODEM
  59.  
  60.     There is a problem if installing the IBM PCMCIA High
  61.     Speed Data/FAX modem on a drive other than the OS/2 2.1
  62.     system drive.  You will need to use the following
  63.     procedure:
  64.  
  65.     1. If you did not install PCMCIA support during OS/2
  66.     2.1 installation, use OS/2 Selective Install to install
  67.     PCMCIA support. Follow the instructions given in the
  68.     OS/2 documentation.
  69.  
  70.     2. Use the PCMCIA Device Driver Diskette that shipped
  71.     with your system to install Socket Services. Follow the
  72.     instructions delivered with your hardware.
  73.  
  74.     3. After completing installation of Socket Services
  75.     driver, do NOT power off or reboot the system. Edit the
  76.     CONFIG.SYS in the root directory where OS/2 is
  77.     installed.
  78.  
  79.     4. Find these two statements which were installed
  80.     during step 2 above:
  81.  
  82.     REM DEVICE=D:\OS2\PCMCIA.SYS
  83.     ------------------------------------------------------
  84.     REM DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VPCMCIA.SYS
  85.     ---------------------------------------------------------------

  87.     NOTE: Make sure that a DEVICE=d:\OS2\COM.SYS statement
  88.     comes after the first PCMCIA.SYS statement.

  90.     5. ADD the following statements to your CONFIG.SYS file
  91.     in the order indicated below. The lines starting with
  92.     REM are the ones from a previous step. Make sure to
  93.     substitute the drive letter where OS/2 is installed in
  94.     place of the 'd:'

  97.         REM DEVICE=d:\OS2\PCMCIA.SYS
  98.         DEVICE=d:\IBMODEM\ESTDFM.OS2 S1C2
  99.         REM DEVICE=d:\OS2\MDOS\VPCMCIA.SYS

  104.     6. Remove the REM statements that precede the
  105.        PCMCIA.SYS  and VPCMCIA.SYS device driver statements.
  106.  
  107.     7. Save the CONFIG.SYS file and exit the editor.
  108.  
  109.     8. Create a \IBMODEM directory on the drive where OS/2
  110.         is installed and copy ESTDFM.OS2 from the IBM
  111.         Data/Fax Modem Diskette into this directory.
  112.  
  113.     9. Shutdown OS/2 and re-IPL your system.

  116.     III. OS/2 2.1 CONFIG.SYS ORDERING FOR  THE OS/2 2.1
  117.     PCMCIA SUPPORT
  118.  
  119.     There is a problem with COM.SYS and the way it
  120.     interacts to Card Services (PCMCIA.SYS). Normally,
  121.     COM.SYS would follow PCMCIA.SYS but due to a defect,
  122.     the OS/2 2.1 COM.SYS must come before PCMCIA.SYS.
  123.     Future releases of OS/2 2.1 will require COM.SYS to
  124.     follow PCMCIA.SYS. The next section gives an example of
  125.     the device statements for the IBM PCMCIA High-Speed
  126.     Data/FAX Modem on an IBM Thinkpad 500.

  128.     Checking the loading order in the "Config.sys",
  129.     com.sys later than April, 93.
  130.

  132.     This is an example of a partial CONFIG.SYS from an IBM
  133.     Thinkpad 500(c) using an IBM High-Speed PCMCIA Data/FAX
  134.     Modem with a later OS/2 2.1 COM.SYS. The COM.SYS MUST
  135.     be dated later 4-29-93.  There are APARs which address
  136.     this issue.

  174.     After you verify that the IBM Thinkpad 500 system
  175.     configuration (via the reference diskette) is correct,
  176.     you need to check the following files versions:

  193.     The latest PCMCIA product updates are available from
  194.     the IBM National Support Center BBS. The disk images
  195.     are stored in the Reference Diskette library. You will
  196.     need to enter REF DISK at the main BBS menu to enable
  197.     access to this library.

  199.     V. Verify Modem Versions.
  200.     If your IBM highspeed PCMCIA Data/FAX modem is losing
  201.     data or does not make consistent connections, you need
  202.     to check the version of the FLASH ROM. The procedure
  203.     should be used:

  206.     1. Use a terminal emulator (such as PM Terminal) to
  207.     connect directly to the modem.
  208.  
  209.     2. Enter "ATI0" and check that the modem responds with
  210.     "14400".
  211.  
  212.     3. Enter "ATI3" and check that the modem responds with
  213.     something similar to "PCMCIA HS V1.29 . . . 1993 -
  214.     028". If the number after the "1993" date is less than
  215.     "028", you need to contact the support number which
  216.     came with your Thinkpad system. You will need a FLASH
  217.     ROM update.

  220.     VI. Trouble Shooting the Thinkpad 500 for PCMCIA
  221.     problems.
  222.  
  223.     The following sections will highlight key area to
  224.     review should you be having difficulty with the IBM
  225.     High-Speed PCMCIA Data/FAX Modem and the IBM Thinkpad
  226.     500(c).
  227.  
  228.     TROUBLE SHOOTING THE 500C AND THE  PCMCIA MODEM
  229.  
  230.     The IBM Thinkpad 500 (c) is similar to the IBM Thinkpad
  231.     720 except that the IBM Thinkpad 500  only has one (1)
  232.     PCMCIA socket. In the CONFIG.SYS file, the socket
  233.     service needs to be configured as:Parameters are not
  234.     needed.
  235.

  238.     NOTE: The IBM Thinkpad 500  comes with a utility
  239.     diskette. This disk has a directory named TP500 which
  240.     contains the OS/2 Socket Service and Resource Map
  241.     Utility.

  247.     o Make sure that the "INTERNAL MODEM" is disabled.
  248.     o The EXTERNAL port should be set to SERIAL 1 (or COM1).
  249.     o Make sure that the "socket" is enabled.
  250.     o Also use the "POWEROS2.EXE" which is shipped with the
  251.  
  252.     Thinkpad 500 and select the "MORE" option to see   that
  253.     the "socket" is enabled.

  255.     0 Select SET POWER MANAGEMENT OPTIONS
  256.     0 Check that the PROCESSOR setting is NOT set to
  257.     AUTO(LONG BATTERY LIFE) We recommend that you select 50
  258.     MHZ.
  259.     0 Check that SERIAL PORT is set to ON.
  260.     0 Check that PCMCIA SLOTS is set to ON.
  261.  
  262.     NOTE: These devices can be turned off and on by using
  263.     the PS2.EXE utility. The purpose of setting these
  264.     devices to ON is to assist in problem resolution.
