- Instructions for loading OS/2 2.X code onto an IBM Thinkpad.
- ------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Note: To install OS/2 1.3 on the Thinkpad a new 1.3 install diskette is
- needed, which is available from IBM (on DEPTAU3 disk).
-
- The following procedure is for installing OS/2 2.X with a docking
- station present.
-
- Note: This assumes you have the requisite hardware in terms of
- memory, disk space and so on in your Thinkpad machine.
-
- The procedures are the same for all Thinkpads that support OS/2.
- However, the Thinkpad 700C will be limited to 16 colors unless you
- obtain the OS/2 Service Pak level XR06055, IBM OS/2 2.00.1,
- OS/2 2.1 or later. This feature was added into OS/2 at these levels.
- You can obtain them by calling 1-800-3-IBMOS2.
-
- Steps for loading OS/2 2.X onto a Thinkpad machine:
-
- 1) Prepare 2 formatted 1.44 megabyte diskettes. (Format)
- 2) Use the DISKCOPY command to make backup copies of both the OS/2 2.X
- INSTALL diskette and diskette number 1.
-
- 3) Put away the original diskettes and execute the remaining steps with
- your backup disks.
- 4) On the reference disk (or reference partition on the hard disk) that
- came with the Thinkpad, locate the file called xxxxx.BIO. The xxxxx
- will be a name specific to the machine, such as SF85E0X.BIO.
-
- Note: To get to the IML partition (where the reference disk can be
- found) hit CTL-ALT-INS from a power on boot up when the cursor
- gets to the right hand corner of the screen.
-
- 5) Copy the .BIO file to both the INSTALL diskette and diskette 1 backups.
- 6) Now use a text editor and edit the ABIOS.SYS file on the INSTALL
- diskette and diskette 1 backups.
- 7) Add a line to the top of each file in the same format as the others,
- using the file name obtained and copied in steps 4 and 5 above.
- 8) Save the files (as a plain text file if file type is requested).
- 9) You may now install OS/2 2.X on your Thinkpad using the backup
- diskettes you just made.
-
- ***NOTE***
- If bootup fails after installation or other problems are noticed, check
- the contents of the ABIOS.SYS file in the \OS2 subdirectory. In most
- cases, it should contain about 9 file listings. The top listing should
- be the .BIO file from the reference disk with a name like SF85E4X.BIO or
- SF85E0X.BIO. The other files should be something like 000000.BIO,
- W0F0000.BIO, W050101.BIO, W050100.BIO, W050000.BIO, W060100.BIO,
- W020100.BIO, and W020101.BIO. If you find a copy of an ABIOS.SYS in the
- root directory of the system hard drive, remove it. There should only be
- one ABIOS.SYS file in the OS2 subdirectory. If .BIO files are missing,
- you can find these on the OS2 INSTALL disk. Also check the contents of
- the CONFIG.SYS file in root directory. If you have BASEDEV=PRINT01.SYS,
- change it to BASEDEV=PRINT02.SYS. If you have BASEDEV=IBM1FLPY.ADD,
- change it to BASEDEV=IBM2FLPY.ADD.
-
- ***NOTE***
- The symptom that results when trying to install OS/2 2.0 earlier than
- version 2.00.1 is an OS/2 Internal Processing Error or the product may
- fail to load.
