- COMMUNICATIONS (COM) SETTINGS FOR WIN-OS/2 SESSIONS
- ================================================================
-
- Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- SYMPTOMS:
-
- Communications speed is slow for Windows applications running in
- WIN-OS/2 sessions.
-
- RESOLUTION:
-
- Each setting affects COM speed for the applications differently
- depending on if they are changed independently or changed in
- conjunction with others.
-
-
- PROCEDURE:
-
- There are new COM.SYS and VCOM.SYS on BBS called SIO102.ZIP.
-
- These drivers are written in assembly and are developed to
- increase speed. They have different settings that are registered
- with WIN-OS/2 settings. Also, there is a half-duplex setting
- call RTS that can give significant speed improvements. You
- should to use these at your own discretion.
-
- 1. Set EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT to ZERO unless the application can
- only use EMS memory. EMS memory is slower than XMS memory.
- Use XMS or DPMI instead.
-
- 2. If not using HPFS, remark (REM) out HEIFS=C:\OS2\HPFS.IFS
- /CACHE:64 /CRECL:4 /AUTOCHECK:F.
- Note: REM this out, do not delete, in case the line is
- needed later.
-
- 3. Set PRIORITY_DISK_IO=NO. This does not give foreground
- application's priority boost over the background ones.
-
- 4. Remove the /UMB from the DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VXMS.SYS /UMB
- in the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS. Windows may be using the UMB area.
- Deleting the use of the UMB area may resolve memory leakage
- and conflicts.
-
- 5. Set DOS=LOW,NOUMB in the CONFIG.SYS. This may prevent
- conflict.
-
- 6. For the DISKCACHE=1024,LW,AC:G in the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS,
- delete the LW parameter. This is the lazy write feature and
- it is checked exiting the OS/2 kernel. Not having lazy write
- definitely increases COM performance.
-
- 7. Set MAXWAIT to 1 for a fast CPU. Leave this to 3 for a slow
- CPU.
-
- 8. The following WIN-OS/2 settings can be changed:
-
-
- a. IDLE_SECONDS 60 (maximum)
-
- b. IDLE_SENSITIVITY 100 (maximum)
-
- c. HW_TIMER ON
-
- d. HW_ROM_TO_RAM ON
-
- e. COM_DIRECT_ACCESS OFF
-
- f. COM_HOLD ON
-
- g. COM_RECEIVE_BUFFER_FLUSH NONE
-
- h. COM_SELECT the port used
