  11.        HANGING ON DISK 1 DURING INSTALLATION OF OS/2
  12.  
  13. HINTS:  1. Disable your system's Turbo, Cache, and Shadow RAM.
  14.            Disable asynchronous memory refresh, if you have it.
  15.            (Packard Bell's need not disable features)
  16.            Enable features when installation is completed.
  17.         2. Check the BIOS date:  If you have DOS 4.0 or higher,
  18.            on your system do the following:
  19.                 TYPE:  C:  DEBUG and press Enter
  20.                   (a minus sign appears while using DEBUG)
  21.                 TYPE: d f000:.fff0 and press Enter
  22.                 TYPE: d f000:.ffd0 and press Enter
  23.            Three lines appear.  Look at the end of the middle
  24.            line and you see:
  25.            7//0011//9933 - this is a date of 7/11/93.
  26.                 TYPE: q and press Enter   (to quit)
  27.            Generally speaking:
  28.              AMI BIOS date should be 5/91
  29.              Phoenix &. Award Bios date should be 5/92
  30. It is recommended to update your BIOS if the dates are earlier
  31. than the above dates.
  32.  
  33. For WARP, Chapter 14, Solving Installation Problems
  34.   Make sure IRQ settings do not conflict with the hard disk
  35.   controllers IRQ settings.  If multiple hard disk controllers
  36.   or hardcards are installed in the system, it may be necessary
  37.   to remove one of them.
  38.  
  39.   The following apply to machine specific problems:
  40.   -  If you are installing on a system with an Allways IN2000
  41.      SCSI adapter, and an IPE or FDISK error appears during the
  42.      installation of Diskette 1.  Upgrade your system to the
  43.      current BIOS level of VCN:.1-02.  The Allways IN2000 SCSI
  44.      adapter may require an EPROM upgrade to operate with OS/2.
  45.      You may find you have problems when trying to install over
  46.      DOS partitions.  To correct these problems, install the
  47.      EPROM and reformat the hard disk.
  48.   -  If you are installing OS/2 on a Mylex system, a TRAP0008
  49.      error occurs during the installation of Diskette 1.
  50.      Contact the vendor for more information.
  51.   -  If you are installing on a Compaq 386/33L Deskpro and a
  52.      TRAP000D error occurs during the installation of Diskette 1.
  53.      To correct this problem, do the following:
  54.      1. Make a copy of Diskette 1.  You modify the copy.
  55.      2. Use a text editor to modify the CONFIG.SYS on Diskette 1.
  56.      3. Delete the following statement from CONFIG.SYS, type:
  57.                   DEL BASEDEV=IBM2SCSI.ADD     and press Enter
  58.      4. Use the copy of the diskette during the installation
  59.         instead of the original.
  60.  
  61. FOR OS/2 2.X, WARP:
  62. You have redirected your drives for installing OS/2 and receive
  63. the COUNTRY.SYS on diskette 1.
  64.  
  65. To redirect drives from B: to A:  You can change the CMOS
  66. or BIOS setup and switch cables on the diskette drives.
  67.  
  68. For COUNTRY.SYS error message on Diskette 1 while redirecting:
  69.   Check cables to verify if there are correctly switched.
  70.   Check the CMOS for necessary changes for switching drives.
  71.  
  72. If problems or questions occur while doing this, contact the
  73. vendor of the system.
  74.  
  75. ================================================================
  76. HANG ON DISK 1 WHILE INSTALLING OS/2 2.X, WARP ON A SYSTEM WITH
  77.                   A QUANTUM HARD CARD
  78. ================================================================
  79.  
  80. SYMPTOMS:
  81.     When installing OS/2 on a system with a Quantum Hard
  82.     Card, the installation process hangs on diskette 1.
  83.  
  84. RESOLUTION:
  85. 1. Modify the CONFIG.SYS on diskette 1 of the OS/2 Installation
  86.     Diskettes.  Add default settings for the Quantum Hard Card.
  87.     Change the line:         BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD line.
  88.     To read:                 BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /A:.1 /IRQ:.11
  89.  
  90. PROCEDURES:
  91. 1. Make a Backup copy of diskette 1 and use the copy for the
  92.    following steps.
  93. 2. Start the system with DOS or a DOS bootable diskette.
  94. 3. Insert the copy of diskette 1 in Drive A:
  95. 4. Edit the CONFIG.SYS on the copy of diskette 1.
  96. 5. Locate the BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD line.
  97. 6. Add /A:.1 /IRQ:.11 to the end of the line.
  98. 7. The edited line should now look like
  99.              BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /A:.1 /IRQ:.11
  100. 8. Save the changes and remove the diskette from Drive A:
  101. 9. Begin installation of OS/2 using the copy of diskette 1
  102.    when asked to insert diskette 1.
  103.  
  104. =================================================================
  105.        INSTALLATION OF OS/2 2.1 HANGS ON THE INSTALLATION
  106.          DISKETTE OR DISK 1 DURING INSTALL ON A MOD 8580
  107. =================================================================
  108.  
  109. SYMPTOMS:
  110.  OS/2 V2.1 hangs on diskette 1 or Installation Disk on MOD 8580.
  111.  
  112. SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
  113.  Copy packed file BUNDLE on diskette 1 to another location.
  114.  
  115. RESOLUTION:
  116. 1. With TWO diskette drives:
  117.     A. Insert a DOS bootable diskette in drive A: and start the
  118.        computer.  If the computer is already running, press
  119.        Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  120.     B. Place a blank diskette in drive B:.. This diskette
  121.        becomes the replacement OS/2 diskette 1.
  122.     C. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  123.             FORMAT B:  /v    and press Enter
  124.     D. When asked for a volume label type:
  125.             DISK 1           and press Enter
  126.     E. When asked if you want to format another, type:
  127.             N                and press Enter
  128.     F. Remove the replacement OS/2 diskette 1 from drive B:
  129.     G. Insert the original OS/2 diskette 1 into drive B:
  130.     H. At the DOS A: prompt, type:
  131.             XCOPY B:  A:  /p
  132.     I. At the first (Y/N)? prompt, remove the DOS diskette from
  133.        drive A: and insert the replacement OS/2 diskette 1 in drive A:
  134.     J. At the B:.BUNDLE(Y/N)? prompt, type:
  135.             N      and press Enter
  136.     K. For all other (Y/N)? prompts, type:
  137.             Y      and press Enter
  138.     L. When the DOS A:.> prompt appears, type:
  139.             COPY B:.BUNDLE A:   and press Enter
  140.  
  141. 2. With ONE diskette drive:
  142.     A. Insert a DOS bootable diskette in the diskette drive and
  143.        start computer.  If the computer is already running, press
  144.        Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  145.     B. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  146.             FORMAT B:  /v    and press Enter
  147.     C. When prompted, insert a blank diskette in the diskette
  148.        drive.  This diskette becomes the replacement OS/2
  149.        diskette 1.
  150.     D. When asked for a volume label type:
  151.             DISK 1           and press Enter
  152.     E. When asked if you want to format another, type:
  153.             N                and press Enter
  154.     F. When prompted to insert diskette for drive A:., remove the
  155.        replacement OS/2 diskette 1 from diskette drive and
  156.        insert DOS diskette in the diskette drive
  157.     G. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  158.             DISKCOPY A:  B:  and press Enter
  159.        When prompted to insert SOURCE diskette in drive A:.,
  160.        insert the original OS/2 diskette 1.
  161.        When prompted to insert TARGET diskette in drive B:.,
  162.        insert a blank diskette.
  163.        This diskette becomes the temporary copy of diskette 1.
  164.     H. When asked if you want to copy another diskette, type:
  165.             N      and press Enter
  166.     I. When prompted to insert diskette with COMMAND.COM in drive
  167.        A:., insert the DOS diskette.
  168.     J. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  169.             ERASE B:.BUNDLE   and press Enter
  170.        When prompted to insert diskette for drive B:., insert the
  171.        temporary copy of diskette 1.
  172.        When prompted to insert diskette for drive A:., insert the
  173.        DOS diskette.
  174.     K. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  175.             XCOPY B: A:      and press Enter
  176.        When prompted to insert diskette for drive B:., insert the
  177.        temporary copy of diskette 1.
  178.        When prompted to insert diskette for drive A:., insert the
  179.        replacement OS/2 diskette 1.
  180.     L. When prompted to insert diskette with COMMAND.COM in drive
  181.        A:., insert the DOS diskette.
  182.     M. When the DOS A:.> prompt appears, type:
  183.             XCOPY B:.BUNDLE A:     and press Enter
  184.        When prompted to insert diskette for drive B:., insert the
  185.        original OS/2 diskette 1.
  186.        When prompted to insert diskette for drive A:., insert the
  187.        replacement OS/2 diskette 1.
  188.  
  189. ================================================================
  190.     DURING INSTALLATION OF OS/2 2.1 THE DISKETTE DRIVE
  191.     RAPIDLY SEEKS BACK AND FORTH THEN GIVES A DISK
  192.                   READ ERROR ON DISK 1
  193. ================================================================
  194.  
  195. SYMPTOMS:
  196.  1. On Diskette 1 after logo appears, the diskette drive starts
  197.     seeking rapidly back and forth, screen clears and "A disk
  198.     read error has occurred.  Restart system."  message appears.
  199.  2. This is known to happen on systems with AOX, HYPER ACE, and
  200.     XTEND processor upgrade cards.
  201. RESOLUTION:
  202.  1. The cause of this error is a file on Diskette 1 called
  203.     BUNDLE, size 344132.
  204.  2. Moving the position where this file resides on the diskette 1
  205.     is known to fix the problem.
  206. PROCEDURES:
  207.  1. Insert a DOS bootable diskette in diskette drive and start
  208.     the computer.  If the computer is already running, press
  209.     Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  210.  2. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  211.          FORMAT B:  /v       and press Enter
  212.  3. When prompted, place a blank diskette in the diskette drive.
  213.     This diskette becomes the replacement OS/2 diskette 1.
  214.  4. When asked for a volume label type:
  215.          DISK 1    and press Enter
  216.  5. When asked if you want to format another, type:
  217.          N         and press Enter
  218.  6. When prompted to insert diskette for drive A:., remove the
  219.     replacement OS/2 diskette 1 and insert the DOS diskette.
  220.  7. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  221.          DISKCOPY A:  B:     and press Enter
  222.     When prompted to insert SOURCE diskette in drive A:., insert
  223.     the original OS/2 diskette 1.
  224.     When prompted to insert TARGET diskette in drive B:., insert
  225.     a blank diskette.
  226.     This diskette becomes the temporary copy of diskette 1.
  227.  8. When asked if you want to copy another diskette, type:
  228.           N        and press Enter
  229.  9. When prompted to insert diskette with COMMAND.COM in drive
  230.     A:., insert the DOS diskette.
  231. 10. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  232.           ERASE B:.BUNDLE     and press Enter
  233.     When prompted to insert diskette for drive B:., insert the
  234.     temporary copy of diskette 1.
  235.     When prompted to insert diskette for drive A:., insert the DOS
  236.     diskette.
  237. 11. At the DOS A:.> prompt, type:
  238.           XCOPY B:  A:       and press Enter
  239.     When prompted to insert diskette for drive B:., insert the
  240.     temporary copy of diskette 1.
  241.     When prompted to insert diskette for drive A:., insert the
  242.     replacement OS/2 diskette 1.
  243. 12. When prompted to insert diskette with COMMAND.COM in drive
  244.     A:., insert the DOS diskette.
  245. 13. When the DOS A:.> prompt appears, type:
  246.           XCOPY B:.BUNDLE A:  and press Enter
  247.     When prompted to insert diskette for drive B:., insert
  248.     the original OS/2 diskette 1.
  249.     When prompted to insert diskette for drive A:., insert the
  250.     replacement OS/2 diskette 1.
  251.  
  252. ================================================================
  253. INSTALLING OS/2 WARP ON AN IBM PS/2 WITH ABIOS
  254. ================================================================
  255.  
  256. As part of the setup of your computer, you may need to create a
  257. Reference Diskette, sometimes called a Hardware System Program
  258. Diskette.  The Reference Diskette contains BIOS information,
  259. which is code about how your diskette drives, hard drives, and
  260. keyboard interact.  OS/2 WARP Installation program may prompt you
  261. to insert this diskette.
  262.  
  263. If you have not created the Reference Diskette, do so before you
  264. begin the installation of OS/2 WARP.  Refer to your PS/2
  265. documentation for instructions on creating the diskette.
  266.  
  267.  
  268.  
  269. ================================================================
  270. INSTALLING OS/2 WARP ON A PS/2 MODEL 76 OR IBM THINKPAD WITH A
  271. DOCKING STATION
  272. ================================================================
  273.  
  274. If you are installing OS/2 WARP on one of the following:
  275.            IBM PS/2 Model 76
  276.            IBM ThinkPad 700, 700C, 720, or 720C attached to
  277.                 a 3550 Docking Station
  278. You need to replace the ABIOS files on the OS/2 Installation
  279. Diskette with files from Reference Diskette, as listed below:
  280.  
  281. 1.  If you are using a ThinkPad, detach it from the Docking
  282.     Station.
  283. 2.  Create a Reference Diskette by following the documentation
  284.     that came with your computer.
  285. 3.  Make a copy of the Installation Diskette, type:
  286.        DISKCOPY A:. A:    and press Enter
  287.     Remove and insert diskettes when prompted to do so.
  288. 4.  Remove the copy from drive A: and insert the original
  289.     Installation Diskette.
  290. 5.  Turn your computer on.  If your computer is already on, press
  291.     Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart it.
  292. 6.  When you are prompted; remove the Installation Diskette,
  293.     insert Diskette 1, and press Enter.
  294. 7.  When the Welcome screen appears, press F# to display the
  295.     command prompt.
  296. 8.  Insert the copy of the Installation Diskette into drive A:.
  297. 9.  Type:
  298.        A:.\DEL *.BIO     and press Enter
  299. 10. Remove the copy of the Installation Diskette and insert the
  300.     Reference Diskette you created into the drive A:.
  301. 11. If your computer has more than one diskette drive, insert the
  302.     copy of the Installation Diskette into drive B:..  In the next
  303.     two steps, you are prompted to insert diskettes into both
  304.     drive A: and drive B:
  305.  
  306.     If your computer has only one diskette drive, when you are
  307.     asked to insert a diskette into drive A:., insert the
  308.     Reference Diskette into your diskette drive.  When you are
  309.     asked to insert a diskette into drive B:., insert the copy of
  310.     the Installation Diskette into your diskette drive.
  311. 12. Type:
  312.        COPY A:.\*.BIO B:.\     and press Enter
  313. 13. Type:
  314.        COPY A:.\ABIOS.SYS B:.\ and press Enter
  315. 14. Remove the diskettes and turn off your computer.  If you are
  316.     using a ThinkPad, return it to the Docking Station.
  317.  
  318. ================================================================
  319.         IPE AT 0F00:.7275 ON DISK 1 OF OS/2 2.1 INSTALL OR
  320.         IPE AT 0F00:.76A1 ON DISK 1 OF OS/2 2.0 INSTALL ON
  321.                   ROM LOADABLE MACHINES
  322. ================================================================
  323. SYMPTOMS:
  324.  1. When trying to install OS/2 2.0 GA the installation program
  325.     hangs on Install diskette 1 with an
  326.          Internal Processing Error at ## 0F00 :  76A1
  327.          60000, 6000
  328.          Internal Revision 6.307
  329.  2. When trying to install OS/2 2.1 GA the installation program
  330.     hangs on Installation diskette 1 with an (Only Thinkpad 700C
  331.     installing from CD-ROM attached to Docking Station.)
  332.          Internal Processing Error at ## 0F00 :  7275
  333.          60000, 6000
  334.          Internal Revision 6.427
  335.     This error could be the same for machines that are currently
  336.     running:
  337.     A. OS/2 2.0's Preload code
  338.     B. OS/2 2.0's 10/92 Service Pak I
  339.     C. OS/2 2.1 but are missing the necessary ABIOS files;
  340.     NOTE: Also, it is NOT recommended to install OS/2 2.1
  341.           on top of any beta version of OS/2 2.1.
  342.  3. Occurs on ROM loadable machine such as an IBM Model 9556/9557
  343.  
  344. RESOLUTION:
  345.    Copy the .BIO file from the Reference Diskette onto copies of
  346.    the Installation diskette and diskette 1.  Update the
  347.    ABIOS.SYS files on these diskettes and use the copies for
  348.    the installation.   This is the ABIOS work around.
  349.  
  350. PROCEDURE:
  351.  1. Using DISKCOPY command make backup diskettes for OS/2 2.X
  352.     Installation diskette and diskette 1.
  353.     NOTE:  It is very important these backups are used for rest
  354.            of the procedure.
  355.  2. Locate a file xxxx.BIO on the reference diskette of your PS/2
  356.     or PS/VALUEPOINT. (If you don't have the reference diskette,
  357.     follow instructions that came with machine to create one).
  358.  3. Copy the xxxx.BIO to INSTALL and DISK_1 diskettes.
  359.  4. Edit the ABIOS.SYS file on the INSTALL diskette.  Add the
  360.     xxxx.BIO to the FIRST LINE of the file.  Use the same
  361.     format as the other lines in this file.
  362.  5. Copy this modified ABIOS.SYS to the DISK_1.
  363.  
  364.     Using these two modified diskettes the installation
  365.     continues beyond Diskette 1.  Procedure is the same for
  366.     OS/2 2.0 and OS/2 2.1.
  367. =================================================================
  368.       TRAP D ON DISK #1 DURING INSTALLATION OF OS/2 2.1 ON A
  369.                   COMPAQ 386/33L and 486/33L DESKPRO
  370. =================================================================
  371. SYMPTOMS:
  372.       Trap 000D on diskette 1 during install of OS/2 2.1 on a
  373.       Compaq 386/33L &. 486/33L Deskpro.  CS:.EIP=0538:.00003823.
  374.  
  375. RESOLUTION:
  376.  1. Make a copy of diskette 1.
  377.  2. Edit CONFIG.SYS file on the copy of Diskette 1 as follows:
  378.        REM OUT:       REM BASEDEV=IBM2M57.ADD
  379.                       REM BASEDEV=IBM2SCSI.ADD
  380.  3. Use the edited copy of diskette 1 to install.
  381.  
  382. NOTE:  For OS/2 WARP, see Chapter 14, Solving Installation
  383.        Problems.
  384.  
  385.        - If you are installing on a Compaq 386/33L Deskpro and
  386.          receive a TRAP000D on Diskette 1:
  387.          1. Make a copy of Diskette 1.  You modify the copy.
  388.          2. Using a text editor, modify the CONFIG.SYS file on
  389.             copy of Diskette 1.
  390.          3. Delete the following statement from CONFIG.SYS, type:
  391.                   DEL BASEDEV=IBM2SCSI.ADD     and press Enter
  392.          4. Use the copy of the diskette during the installation
  393.             instead of the original.
