  5. INSTALLING THE MS-DOS 6 UPGRADE TO CO-EXIST WITH OS/2 2.x

  13.   Start the system from the current version of DOS installed, not
  14.   from an OS/2 VDM or VMB.
  15.  
  16. A: Prepare the Uninstall Diskette:
  17.  
  18.   The Uninstall diskette safeguards the files on the computer
  19.   while you install MS-DOS 6. The Uninstall diskette protects the
  20.   files if SETUP cannot finish installing, or if you encounter
  21.   problems with MS-DOS 6 after SETUP.  You can restore your
  22.   previous version of DOS if you need to.
  23.  
  24.   1.  Write "Uninstall #1" on the label of a formatted diskette
  25.       compatible with drive A. If you are using 360K diskettes,
  26.       you might need two diskettes.  Label the second "Uninstall
  27.       #2".
  28.

  30. B: Disable Disk-Caching, Delete-Protection, and Anti-Virus
  31.    Programs:
  32.  
  33.   Some disk-caching, delete-protection, and anti-virus programs
  34.   conflict with SETUP.  You do not need to disable the startup
  35.   command for the MS-DOS SMARTDrive program.
  36.  
  37.  1.  Edit the DOS CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.  Type REM
  38.      and a space at the beginning of each command line that
  39.      starts a disk-caching, delete-protection, or anti-virus
  40.      program.  Save these files.
  41.  
  42. C. Disable Automatic Message Services:
  43.  
  44.   1. Disable any automatic message service, such as a network
  45.      popup or a printing notification, that prints directly to
  46.      the screen.  These message services are incompatible with
  47.      SETUP.
  48.  
  49.   2. Save the changes to the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
  50.  
  51.   3.  Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the system.
  52.  
  53.   4.  Run SETUP.   After you set up MS-DOS 6, EDIT the CONFIG.SYS
  54.       and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and remove the REM commands you
  55.       added previously.

  58.  RUNNING SETUP
  59.  ---------------------------------------------------------------

  61.  OS/2 DUAL BOOT:
  62.  
  63.  1.  Start the system in DOS, not OS/2 VDM or VMB.
  64.  
  65.  2.  Insert MS-DOS 6 SETUP Diskette 1 in drive A or B.
  66.  
  67.  3.  Type: A:SETUP  or  B:SETUP  at the DOS C:> command prompt.
  68.  
  69.  4.  MS-DOS 6 finds non MS-DOS operating system files (OS/2) on
  70.      the drive and prompts you to remove the files from the hard
  71.      disk.  If you choose to remove the files, MS-DOS 6
  72.      re-partitions the entire first hard disk as one MS-DOS
  73.      partition, removing OS/2 from the system.
  74.  
  75.      Select "DO NOT REMOVE THE FILES".
  76.  
  77.  5.  MS-DOS warns that the "Operating system on the drive (OS/2)
  78.      may be disabled".  Ignore this message.
  79.  
  80.      Select "CONTINUE SETUP".
  81.  
  82.  6.  Follow the prompts on the screen.  If you have questions
  83.      about the procedures or options press F1 for Help.
  84.  
  85.  7.  When SETUP prompts you for the Uninstall diskettes, insert
  86.      the diskettes in drive A.
  87.  
  88.  8.  Restart the system when you complete the SETUP program.  The
  89.      system should start in MS-DOS 6.
  90.

  92.  9.  To go to the OS/2 partition type:  BOOT /OS2.
  93.  
  94. 10.  Copy COMMAND.COM from the C:\DOS directory to the C:\root
  95.      directory.   This lets you boot back to DOS when you are in
  96.      OS/2.
  97.  
  98.                ---------------------------
  99.   NOTE:  SETUP places your previous DOS files in a directory
  100.   named OLD_DOS.x.  If you are sure you do not want to restore
  101.   your previous version of DOS, you can delete the OLD_DOS.x
  102.   directory and its filess by typing DELOLDOS at the command
  103.   prompt.

  107.  OS/2 BOOT MANAGER:
  108.  
  109.  1.  Start the system in DOS, not OS/2 VDM or VMB.
  110.  
  111.  2.  Insert MS-DOS 6 SETUP Diskette 1 in drive A or B.
  112.  
  113.  3.  Type:  A:SETUP   or   B:SETUP   from the DOS prompt.
  114.                (Do not install directly from A or B).
  115.  
  116.  4.  MS-DOS 6 detects a non MS-DOS partition and states that
  117.      "This partition will not be available when using MS-DOS 6".
  118.      Ignore this message.
  119.  
  120.      Select - CONTINUE SETUP.
  121.  
  122.  5  Follow the prompts on the screen.  If you have questions
  123.     about the procedures or options, press F1 for Help.
  124.  
  125.  6.  When SETUP prompts you for the Uninstall diskettes, insert
  126.      the diskettes in drive A.

  129.   NOTE:  SETUP places your previous DOS files in a directory
  130.   named OLD_DOS.x.  If you are sure you do not want to restore
  131.   your previous version of DOS, you can delete the OLD_DOS.x
  132.   directory and its contents by typing DELOLDOS at the command
  133.   prompt.

  136.   TO MAKE THE OS/2 BOOT MANAGER PARTITION ACTIVE AGAIN:
  137.  
  138.     1. Type FDISK at the MS-DOS 6 C:> command prompt. The FDISK
  139.         OPTION screen appears.
  140.  
  141.   2. Select 2 and press ENTER.  The Set Active Partition screen
  142.      appears.  The Boot Manager partition appears as a 1-MB
  143.      non-MS-DOS partition.
  144.  
  145.   3. Select the number that corresponds with the Boot Manager
  146.      partition, and press Enter.
  147.  
  148.   4. When the confirmation screen appears, press Esc. The Fdisk
  149.      Options screen appears.
  150.  
  151.   5. Press Esc to exit FDISK.
  152.  
  153.   6. Restart your computer, your Boot Manager should be active.
  154.

  156.   WARNING
  157.   ***************************
  158.   At the end of the installation process, Microsoft's DOS 6.0
  159.   installation program suggests that you run the "Microsoft
  160.   DEFRAG", and the "Microsoft DOUBLE SPACE" utilities.  These
  161.   utilities are NOT COMPATIBLE with the OS/2 environment, and may
  162.   cause data loss in OS/2 if run on partitions accessible by OS/2
  163.   while running in the Microsoft DOS 6.0 environment.  Microsoft
  164.   DOS 6.0 utilities that perform direct diskette I/O (eg.
  165.   Interlink, undelete) are NOT SUPPORTED under OS/2.  These
  166.   utilities compromise OS/2's filesystem.

  172.   installation problem with MS-DOS 6, but not with OS/2, please
