  4.     BLANK DESKTOP AND NO SYSTEM ACTIVITY AFTER INSTALLATION

  10. SYMPTOM:
  11.  
  12. When you restart the system after installation, you get a blank
  13. desktop and no system activity.
  14.  
  15.  
  16. RESOLUTION:
  17.  
  18.  1.  If using an ATI Ultra, or Ultra Graphics video card:
  19.      a.  Ensure the ATI board is setup as an 8514 PRIMARY
  20.          display.
  21.      b.  Check the CONFIG.SYS for DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
  22.      c.  Contact ATI for updated ROM chip.
  23.  
  24.  2.  Run CHKDSK
  25.  
  26.  3.  Check CONFIG.SYS for duplicate SET USER_INI, and SET
  27.      SYSTEM_INI statements.
  28.  
  29.  4.  Set video card to 8 bits and move it to an 8-bit slot.
  30.  
  31.  5.  If the above is not applicable or does not work, remake
  32.      the desktop.
  33.  
  34. PROCEDURES:
  35.  
  36.  1.  The ATI 8514 Ultra, or Ultra Graphics.
  37.      -  These boards MUST be set up as an 8514 PRIMARY display.
  38.      -  The correct DEVICE statement in the CONFIG.SYS should
  39.         read DEVICE=X:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
  40.         It sometimes installs as VVGA.SYS This must be
  41.         changed.
  42.      -  The older ATI ROM chips return the incorrect monitor ID
  43.         when queried by OS/2.
  44.  
  45.  2.  Run CHKDSK
  46.      a.  Insert the Installation Disk in drive A:
  47.      b.  Turn on the computer.  If already on, perform a proper
  48.          shutdown and restart the system.
  49.      c.  When prompted insert Diskette 1 and press Enter.
  50.      d.  When the Welcome screen appears, press Esc to go
  51.          to an A: prompt.
  52.      e.  Insert Diskette 2, and type: CHKDSK C: /F
  53.      f.  Press Enter.
  54.      g.  If errors appear, rerun the CHKDSK command until
  55.          no errors are found.
  56.      h.  Run this command on all the drives.
  57.  
  58.  3.  Check the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS for duplicate INI statements.
  59.      a.  Boot from DOS or a DOS BOOTABLE DISKETTE.
  60.      b.  Edit the CONFIG.SYS.
  61.      c.  Locate the SET USER_INI, and SET SYSTEM_INI
  62.          statements.
  63.      d.  Scroll through the CONFIG.SYS and make sure they are
  64.          not repeated. If they are, delete the second
  65.          occurrence.
  66.      e.  Save any changes and exit the editor.
  67.  
  68.  4.  Set the Video card to 8 bit mode and place in an 8-bit
  69.      slot.  Consult the documentation that came with the card
  70.      for instructions.

  72.  5.  Remake the desktop.
  73.      a.  Restart the computer using the OS/2 Installation
  74.          Diskette, then when prompted insert Diskette 1.
  75.      b.  When the Welcome screen appears, press the Esc.
  76.      c.  At the A:> prompt type C: and press Enter.
  77.      d.  Type:  CD \OS2 and press Enter.
  78.      e.  Type:  ERASE OS2.INI then press Enter.
  79.      f.  Type:  MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC and press Enter.
  80.      g.  Type:  ERASE OS2SYS.INI and press Enter.
  81.      h.  Type:  MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC and press Enter.
  82.      i.  Delete the hidden file WP ROOT. SF in the startable
  83.            partition.

  85.           For FAT file systems

  87.           1. Type ATTRIB -S -H WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter.
  88.           2. Type DEL WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter.

  91.           For HPFS file systems
  92.           ---------------------
  93.           1. Type ATTRIB -S -H WP ROOT. SF and press Enter.
  94.           2. Type DEL WP ROOT. SF and press Enter.
  95.           3. Delete the desktop
  96.  
  97.           For FAT, CD to OS!2_2.0_D and delete this directory
  98.                     and all subdirectories under it.
  99.  
  100.           For HPFS, CD to OS!2 2.0 DESKTOP and delete this
  101.                    directory and all subdirectories under it.
  102.  
  103. NOTE:  If MAKEINI was run before, or ALT+F1 was used, other
  104. desktops may have be created.  Delete ALL desktops, for
  105. example: OS!2_21.0_D is another desktop.
