- BLANK DESKTOP AND NO SYSTEM ACTIVITY AFTER INSTALLATION

- SYMPTOM:
-
- When you restart the system after installation, you get a blank
- desktop and no system activity.
-
-
- RESOLUTION:
-
- 1. If using an ATI Ultra, or Ultra Graphics video card:
- a. Ensure the ATI board is setup as an 8514 PRIMARY
- display.
- b. Check the CONFIG.SYS for DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
- c. Contact ATI for updated ROM chip.

- 2. Run CHKDSK
-
- 3. Check CONFIG.SYS for duplicate SET USER_INI, and SET
- SYSTEM_INI statements.
-
- 4. Set video card to 8 bits and move it to an 8-bit slot.
-
- 5. If the above is not applicable or does not work, remake
- the desktop.
-
- PROCEDURES:
-
- 1. The ATI 8514 Ultra, or Ultra Graphics.
- - These boards MUST be set up as an 8514 PRIMARY display.
- - The correct DEVICE statement in the CONFIG.SYS should
- read DEVICE=X:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
- It sometimes installs as VVGA.SYS This must be
- changed.
- - The older ATI ROM chips return the incorrect monitor ID
- when queried by OS/2.

- 2. Run CHKDSK
- a. Insert the Installation Disk in drive A:
- b. Turn on the computer. If already on, perform a proper
- shutdown and restart the system.
- c. When prompted insert Diskette 1 and press Enter.
- d. When the Welcome screen appears, press Esc to go
- to an A: prompt.
- e. Insert Diskette 2, and type: CHKDSK C: /F
- f. Press Enter.
- g. If errors appear, rerun the CHKDSK command until
- no errors are found.
- h. Run this command on all the drives.

- 3. Check the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS for duplicate INI statements.
- a. Boot from DOS or a DOS BOOTABLE DISKETTE.
- b. Edit the CONFIG.SYS.
- c. Locate the SET USER_INI, and SET SYSTEM_INI
- statements.
- d. Scroll through the CONFIG.SYS and make sure they are
- not repeated. If they are, delete the second
- occurrence.
- e. Save any changes and exit the editor.

- 4. Set the Video card to 8 bit mode and place in an 8-bit
- slot. Consult the documentation that came with the card
- for instructions.

- 5. Remake the desktop.
- a. Restart the computer using the OS/2 Installation
- Diskette, then when prompted insert Diskette 1.
- b. When the Welcome screen appears, press the Esc.
- c. At the A:> prompt type C: and press Enter.
- d. Type: CD \OS2 and press Enter.
- e. Type: ERASE OS2.INI then press Enter.
- f. Type: MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC and press Enter.
- g. Type: ERASE OS2SYS.INI and press Enter.
- h. Type: MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC and press Enter.
- i. Delete the hidden file WP ROOT. SF in the startable
- partition.

- For FAT file systems
- ----------------------
- 1. Type ATTRIB -S -H WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter.
- 2. Type DEL WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter.

- For HPFS file systems
- ---------------------
- 1. Type ATTRIB -S -H WP ROOT. SF and press Enter.
- 2. Type DEL WP ROOT. SF and press Enter.
- 3. Delete the desktop
-
- For FAT, CD to OS!2_2.0_D and delete this directory
- and all subdirectories under it.
-
- For HPFS, CD to OS!2 2.0 DESKTOP and delete this
- directory and all subdirectories under it.

- NOTE: If MAKEINI was run before, or ALT+F1 was used, other
- desktops may have be created. Delete ALL desktops, for
- example: OS!2_21.0_D is another desktop.
