  13. CONFIGURATION:  AT-bus (ISA) machine
  14.                 non-SCSI disk controller (RLL, MFM, ESDI)
  15.                 sometimes occurs on IDE controllers
  16.  
  17. SYMPTOMS:       Very slow install
  18.                 Very noisy hard disk during install
  19.                 FDISK errors  (may appear with red screen)
  20.                 Very slow operation
  21.  
  22. For OEM systems, it is recommended to disable the following:
  23.  
  24.                  Turbo, Cache, and Shadow Rom
  25.         (Packard Bell system need not disable these features)
  26.  
  27. While installing ALL systems should disconnect devices such as:
  28.  
  29.           Modem, tape backup, Network card, scanner, etc.
  30.  
  31. When installation is completed, ENABLE all features and
  32. reconnect any devices you disconnected.
  33.  
  34. The hard disk controller may currently be incompatible.  Be sure
  35. you have the correct driver for OS/2.  Call the vendor if
  36. necessary.
  37.  
  38. If you need a new device driver, the statement needs
  39. to be present in the CONFIG.SYS.  It is suggested to make a
  40. DISKCOPY of Diskette 1 and to add the BASEDEV=XXX.SYS (where XXX
  41. is the name of the device driver) to the copy of Diskette 1, and
  42. restart system.  If this is not the scenerio for your system,
  43. please follow instructions below.

  47. BEFORE INSTALLATION:
  48.  
  49. 1.  Make a DISKCOPY of Diskette 1.  Use DOS to edit the
  50.     CONFIG.SYS on Diskette 1 copy.
  51.  
  52.     NOTE:  Diskette 1 is first diskette AFTER Installation Disk.
  53.  
  54.          Change the line:   BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
  55.          To read:           REM BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
  56.  
  57.        This uses the IBMINT13.I13 driver.  After installation
  58.        is completed, it is recommended to un-REM the driver.  It
  59.        will then read as the originally statement.

  63. ALTERNATE PROCEDURE:
  64.  
  65. If you do not have access to DOS or do not have a DOS editor to
  66. edit the CONFIG.SYS file on Diskette 1, try the following:
  67.  
  68. 1. Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A:
  69.  
  70. 2. Turn on the computer.  If the computer is already on,
  71.    press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart system.
  72.  
  73. 3. When you are prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and
  74.    insert Diskette 1.
  75.  
  76. 4. Press Enter.
  77.  
  78. 5. When the Welcome Screen appears, press Esc to display
  79.    the OS/2 command prompt.
  80.  
  81. 6. With Diskette 1 in the drive, rename the IBM1S506.ADD to
  82.    IBM1S506.OLD by typing the following at the prompt:
  83.  
  84.               RENAME IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.OLD
  85.  
  86. 7. Continue with Step 2.
  87.

  90. STEP 2
  91. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  92. 1.  Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A:.
  93.  
  94. 2.  Turn on the computer.  If the computer is already on,
  95.     press Ctrl+Alt+Del restart the system.  Proceed with
  96.     Diskettes 1 through 5.
  97.  
  98. 3.  Reinsert the Installation Diskette and press Enter. When
  99.     prompted, remove the Installation diskette and insert
  100.     Diskette 1 and press Enter.  A message tells you to remove
  101.     the Diskette and restart the system.  DO NOT do this; instead
  102.     insert the Installation Diskette back in the A: drive.
  103.  
  104. 4.  Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart system.
  105.     The system should start off Installation Diskette.
  106.  
  107. 5.  When you are prompted, remove the Installation Diskette
  108.     and insert Diskette 1.
  109.  
  110. 6.  Press Enter.
  111.  
  112. 7.  When the Welcome Screen appears, press Esc to display
  113.     the OS/2 command prompt.
  114.  
  115. 8.  You are now at a command line.  If you are NOT attempting
  116.     to install HPFS, go on to step 9, otherwise do the following
  117.     to load the HPFS driver:
  118.  
  119.     Insert Diskette 2 in drive, and type:
  120.  
  121.                        CHKDSK X:
  122.  
  123.          (X:  denotes the drive where OS/2 resides)
  124.  
  125.  9. Enter the following commands:
  126.  
  127.               RENAME X:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.XXX
  128.               COPY   X:\OS2\IBMINT13.I13 C:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD
  129.

  131. 10. Remove the diskette from the drive.  Press Alt+Ctrl+Del to
  132.     restart the system.  Installation resumes where it was.
  133.

  136. AFTER INSTALLATION:
  137.  
  138.  1. Open the system folder on the desktop.
  139.  2. Open Command Prompts Folder.
  140.  3. Open the OS/2 Window.
  141.  4. At the prompt,  go to the OS2 subdirectory on the drive that
  142.     OS2 was installed on, and type:
  143.  
  144.        RENAME IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.XXX
  145.        COPY IBMINT13.I13 IBM1S506.ADD
  146.  
  147.  5. Close all open folders and proceed with a proper shutdown.
  148.  
  149. When the machine is restarted, the changes take effect.
  150.
