  8. This document contains frequently ask questions concerning DOS.
  9. It includes:
  10.  
  11.     - RAMboost
  12.     - Compression
  13.     - Central Point Backup Problems

  17. A. I just installed RAMboost and now my system locks when
  18.    starting or it continually restarts. What should I do?
  19.  
  20.  
  21. Determine which statement in the CONFIG dot SYS or AUTOEXEC 
  22. dot BAT is causing the problem.  For IBM DOS 6 point 3
  23.  
  24. 1. Restart your system and press the F8 function key when the
  25.    "Starting PC DOS" message appears in top left of screen.
  26.    You are prompted to answer yes or no to each item in your
  27.    CONFIG dot SYS and AUTOEXE dot BAT.
  28.  
  29. 2. Answer Yes to each item until you find the line that causes
  30.    the problem.
  31.  
  32. 3. If the line that causes the problem is in the CONFIG dot SYS
  33.    edit the CONFIG dot SYS file and move the line causing the
  34.    problem before the RAMboost statement.
  35.  
  36.    a. Save the file
  37.  
  38.    b. Restart the system.
  39.  
  40.  
  41. 4. If the line that causes the problem is in the AUTOEXE dot
  42. BAT, then edit the RAMBOOST dot INI file.  This file is in the
  43. DOS DATA subdirectory.
  44.  
  45.    a. Look the section called completetiontriggers.  See how
  46.       the other ignore statements appear under the
  47.       completiontriggers section.
  48.  
  49.    b. Add an ignore statement on the driver causing the problem.
  50.  
  51.    c. Save the file.
  52.  
  53.    d. Restart the system.
  54.

  56. B. I just installed RAMboost and now my CD-ROM drive is not
  57.    recognized.
  58.  
  59.  
  60. 1. Edit the RAMBOOST dot INI file in the Dos Data subdirectory.
  61.  
  62. 2. Locate the section called SYSTEM.
  63.  
  64. 3. Add the statement:
  65.  
  66.             OPTION = BINDDEVICES
  67.  
  68. 4. Save the file and restart the system.
  69.  
  70.  
  71. If problem still occurs:
  72. 1. Edit the CONFIG dot SYS file.
  73. 2. Move the CD ROM driver before the RAMboost statement.
  74. 3. Save the file and restart the system.

  79. C. When I start my system I get the error message,
  80.         "Drive Structure Error Mounting Read Only"
  81.                           or
  82.              "Drive C is write protected"
  83.  
  84. 1. At the DOS prompt, type:
  85.  
  86.           S S U T I L and press Enter. 
  87.  
  88. 2. Press Enter at the Analysis option.
  89. 3. Press Enter at the Repair Disk option.  Repair
  90.    Disk finds a problem with a file or directory.
  91.  
  92.    If Repair Disk asks what to do with a file it fixed:
  93.  
  94.    a. Select LEAVE the FILE.
  95.  
  96.    If Repair Disk finds a corrupted directory:
  97.  
  98.    a. Select Repair the Directory.
  99.    b. Select Delete the Directory.
  100.    c. Re-install whatever directory is deleted.
  101.    NOTE:  You must delete the corrupted directory to fix the
  102.           system.
  103.  
  104.  
  105. When Repair Disk is completed, you are prompted to to run check
  106. disk and Scan Disk or you are told the "Compressed Disk is OK No
  107. errors were found".
  108.  
  109. NOTE: It is IMPORTANT to continually run Repair Disk until the
  110.       message "Compressed Disk is OK No errors were found"
  111.       appears. You may have to run Check Disk and Scan Disk two
  112.       to three times before no errors are found.
  113.  
  114. 4. Exit Repair Disk.
  115. 5. Run Check Disk. At the DOS prompt, type:
  116.            CHKDSK  space forward shash F and press Enter.
  117.  
  118.  If you are asked to convert lost clusters to chains, select No.
  119.  
  120. 6.  Restart the system.

  123. D. What do I do if I cannot see any files after compressing my
  124.    system.
  125.  
  126. If you have DOS 6 dot 3, refer to page 85 in your compression
  127. manual on page 85.

  129. If you have Dos 6 dot 1 or 6 dot 3 without the compression
  130. manual:
  131.  
  132. 1. Place your Bootable Super Store Emergency Diskette in drive A:
  133.    and restart your system.
  134. 2. At the A: prompt, type:
  135.  
  136.        ATTRIB space dash S space dash  H  space dash  R 
  137. space C colon backslash asterisk dot asterisk and press Enter.
  138.  
  139. 3. At the A colon prompt, type:
  140.  
  141.       DEFRAG C colon backshash F and press Enter.
  142.  
  143. 4. Type:
  144.  
  145.       ATTRIB space plus S space plus  H space plus R 
  146. space C colon backslash IBM asterisk dot asterick and press
  147. Enter
  148.  
  149. 5. Type:
  150.  
  151.        S S T O R  and press Enter.
  152.  
  153. 6. Select MOUNT.
  154.  
  155. 7. When the MOUNT process is completed, remove the
  156.    diskette from drive A: and restart the system.

  161. E. I have windows on my system and just ran the compression
  162.    program. Now I can't see half the files on the hard disk after
  163.    I restart my system.
  164.                         OR
  165.    My system is compressed and I just installed windows.  Now I
  166.    can't see half the files on the hard disk when I restart the
  167.    system.
  168.

  170. 1. Restart your computer and press F5 when the message Starting
  171.    PC Dos appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
  172.  
  173. 2. At the C prompt, type:
  174.       E space AUTOEXEC dot BAT
  175.  
  176. 3. Make sure the smartdrive program loads from the DOS directory,
  177.    not the windows directory.
  178.  
  179. 4. Change the statement calling windows smartdrive to DOS
  180.    smartdrive.
  181.  
  182. 5. Save the file and restart the system.

  187. F. After running the compresstion program, I can't access my
  188.    Novell F drive.
  189.  
  190. 1. Go to the root directory of the host drive.  For example, if
  191.    the entire C drive is compressed and it created a D drive,
  192.    then your host drive would be drive D. From the root directory
  193.    of your host drive type:
  194.  
  195.        ATTRIB  space dash S space dash H space dash  R space 
  196. asterec dot INI and press Enter.
  197.  
  198. 2. Edit the DBLSPACE dot INI file, type:
  199.  
  200.            E DBLSPACE dot INI
  201.  
  202. 3. Change  MaxRemovableDrives=2 to MaxRemovableDrives=0.
  203.  
  204. 4. Press F4.
  205.  
  206. 5. At the DOS prompt, type:
  207.  
  208.           E ADDSTOR dot INI and press Enter.
  209.  
  210. 6. Add the line:
  211.  
  212.           NOTAUTO=AB and press F4.
  213.  
  214. 7. Restart the system when you return to the DOS prompt.

  217. G.  When I start my system, I get the "You are loading an
  218.     incorrect versions of double space for this version of MS
  219.     DOS" message.

  222. If you do not have a compressed drive on your system:
  223.  
  224.   1. From the C root directory, type:
  225.  
  226.           DELTREE DBLSPACE dot BIN and press Enter.
  227.  
  228.   2. When you are prompted to delete the file, answer Yes.
  229.   3. Restart the system.
  230.  
  231. If you have a compressed drive on the system:
  232.  
  233.   1. Insert the DOS installation diskette 1 in drive A or B.
  234.   2. Go to that drive and type:
  235.  
  236.          SETUP backslash E and press Enter.
  237.  
  238.   3. When you are prompted for which programs to install, answer
  239.      "Yes" to install compression.
  240. to the screen that ask which programs to install, just answer yes
  241. to install compression and your problem will be solved after
  242. installation finishes.

  246. H. CP Backup is not working properly.
  247.  
  248. Call (503) 984-2409 and request FaxBack document #30013.  This
  249. document contains common CP Backup problems and solutions.  If
  250. you still have a problem, review the section, Using Central Point
  251. Backup Tape Drive Information, in the DOS User's Guide to verify
  252. you are using a supported Tape Unit.
