- This document contains frequently ask questions concerning DOS.
- It includes:

- A. I just installed RAMboost and now my system locks when
- starting or it continually restarts. What should I do?
-
-
- Determine which statement in the CONFIG dot SYS or AUTOEXEC
- dot BAT is causing the problem. For IBM DOS 6 point 3
-
- 1. Restart your system and press the F8 function key when the
- "Starting PC DOS" message appears in top left of screen.
- You are prompted to answer yes or no to each item in your
- CONFIG dot SYS and AUTOEXE dot BAT.
-
- 2. Answer Yes to each item until you find the line that causes
- the problem.
-
- 3. If the line that causes the problem is in the CONFIG dot SYS
- edit the CONFIG dot SYS file and move the line causing the
- problem before the RAMboost statement.
-
- a. Save the file
-
- b. Restart the system.
-
-
- 4. If the line that causes the problem is in the AUTOEXE dot
- BAT, then edit the RAMBOOST dot INI file. This file is in the
- DOS DATA subdirectory.
-
- a. Look the section called completetiontriggers. See how
- the other ignore statements appear under the
- completiontriggers section.
-
- b. Add an ignore statement on the driver causing the problem.
-
- c. Save the file.
-
- d. Restart the system.
-

- B. I just installed RAMboost and now my CD-ROM drive is not
- recognized.
-
-
- 1. Edit the RAMBOOST dot INI file in the Dos Data subdirectory.
-
- 2. Locate the section called SYSTEM.
-
- 3. Add the statement:
-
- OPTION = BINDDEVICES
-
- 4. Save the file and restart the system.
-
-
- If problem still occurs:
- 1. Edit the CONFIG dot SYS file.
- 2. Move the CD ROM driver before the RAMboost statement.
- 3. Save the file and restart the system.
-

- C. When I start my system I get the error message,
- "Drive Structure Error Mounting Read Only"
- or
- "Drive C is write protected"
-
- 1. At the DOS prompt, type:
-
- S S U T I L and press Enter.
-
- 2. Press Enter at the Analysis option.
- 3. Press Enter at the Repair Disk option. Repair
- Disk finds a problem with a file or directory.
-
- If Repair Disk asks what to do with a file it fixed:
-
- a. Select LEAVE the FILE.
-
- If Repair Disk finds a corrupted directory:
-
- a. Select Repair the Directory.
- b. Select Delete the Directory.
- c. Re-install whatever directory is deleted.
- NOTE: You must delete the corrupted directory to fix the
- system.
-
-
- When Repair Disk is completed, you are prompted to to run check
- disk and Scan Disk or you are told the "Compressed Disk is OK No
- errors were found".
-
- NOTE: It is IMPORTANT to continually run Repair Disk until the
- message "Compressed Disk is OK No errors were found"
- appears. You may have to run Check Disk and Scan Disk two
- to three times before no errors are found.
-
- 4. Exit Repair Disk.
- 5. Run Check Disk. At the DOS prompt, type:
- CHKDSK space forward shash F and press Enter.
-
- If you are asked to convert lost clusters to chains, select No.
-
- 6. Restart the system.

- D. What do I do if I cannot see any files after compressing my
- system.
-
- If you have DOS 6 dot 3, refer to page 85 in your compression
- manual on page 85.
-
- If you have Dos 6 dot 1 or 6 dot 3 without the compression
- manual:
-
- 1. Place your Bootable Super Store Emergency Diskette in drive A:
- and restart your system.
- 2. At the A: prompt, type:
-
- ATTRIB space dash S space dash H space dash R
- space C colon backslash asterisk dot asterisk and press Enter.
-
- 3. At the A colon prompt, type:
-
- DEFRAG C colon backshash F and press Enter.
-
- 4. Type:
-
- ATTRIB space plus S space plus H space plus R
- space C colon backslash IBM asterisk dot asterick and press
- Enter
-
- 5. Type:
-
- S S T O R and press Enter.
-
- 6. Select MOUNT.
-
- 7. When the MOUNT process is completed, remove the
- diskette from drive A: and restart the system.
-

- E. I have windows on my system and just ran the compression
- program. Now I can't see half the files on the hard disk after
- I restart my system.
- OR
- My system is compressed and I just installed windows. Now I
- can't see half the files on the hard disk when I restart the
- system.

- 1. Restart your computer and press F5 when the message Starting
- PC Dos appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
-
- 2. At the C prompt, type:
- E space AUTOEXEC dot BAT
-
- 3. Make sure the smartdrive program loads from the DOS directory,
- not the windows directory.
-
- 4. Change the statement calling windows smartdrive to DOS
- smartdrive.
-
- 5. Save the file and restart the system.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------

- F. After running the compresstion program, I can't access my
- Novell F drive.
-
- 1. Go to the root directory of the host drive. For example, if
- the entire C drive is compressed and it created a D drive,
- then your host drive would be drive D. From the root directory
- of your host drive type:
-
- ATTRIB space dash S space dash H space dash R space
- asterec dot INI and press Enter.
-
- 2. Edit the DBLSPACE dot INI file, type:
-
- E DBLSPACE dot INI
-
- 3. Change MaxRemovableDrives=2 to MaxRemovableDrives=0.
-
- 4. Press F4.
-
- 5. At the DOS prompt, type:
-
- E ADDSTOR dot INI and press Enter.
-
- 6. Add the line:
-
- NOTAUTO=AB and press F4.
-
- 7. Restart the system when you return to the DOS prompt.

- G. When I start my system, I get the "You are loading an
- incorrect versions of double space for this version of MS
- DOS" message.
-

- If you do not have a compressed drive on your system:
-
- 1. From the C root directory, type:
-
- DELTREE DBLSPACE dot BIN and press Enter.
-
- 2. When you are prompted to delete the file, answer Yes.
- 3. Restart the system.
-
- If you have a compressed drive on the system:
-
- 1. Insert the DOS installation diskette 1 in drive A or B.
- 2. Go to that drive and type:
-
- SETUP backslash E and press Enter.
-
- 3. When you are prompted for which programs to install, answer
- "Yes" to install compression.
- to the screen that ask which programs to install, just answer yes
- to install compression and your problem will be solved after
- installation finishes.

- H. CP Backup is not working properly.
-

- document contains common CP Backup problems and solutions. If
- you still have a problem, review the section, Using Central Point
- Backup Tape Drive Information, in the DOS User's Guide to verify
- you are using a supported Tape Unit.
