  11. OS/2 WARP ERROR MESSAGE DURING INSTALLATION:
  12.      - OS/2 is unable to operate the hard disk or diskette drive
  13.  
  14. ERROR MESSAGE COUNTRY.SYS CANNOT BE FOUND:
  15.      - message on diskette 1 when redirecting drives
  16.      - after installing OS/2 and specific line/s are ignored
  17.      - during the installation of OS/2
  18.      - incorrect path statement or device not recognized by OS/2
  19.      - message when you boot up after OS/2 has been running
  20.

  25. OS/2 is unable to operate your hard disk or diskette drive:
  26.   1. This might indicate some incompatibility between OS/2 and
  27.      the diskette drive controller or hard disk controller in
  28.      your controller.
  29.      A. With a text editor, modify the CONFIG.SYS file on the
  30.         diskette or hard disk from which you are starting OS/2.
  31.      B. REMark out all the lines with BASEDEV=XXXXXXXX.ADD, type:
  32.           NOTE:  where XXXXXXXX is the filename
  33.             REM BASEDEV=XXXXXXX.ADD
  34.      C. Be sure the following two lines appear in CONFIG.SYS:
  35.             BASEDEV=IBMxFLPY.ADD
  36.                x =  1 for NON-Micro Channel systems
  37.                     2 for Micro Channel systems
  38.             BASEDEV=IBMINT13.I13
  39.  
  40.   2. A diskette drive or hard disk drive controller may have an
  41.      additional device, such as a tape backup, scanner, network
  42.      card, modem, etc. attached to it.
  43.      A. Disconnect additional devices, if possible.
  44.  
  45.   3. An interrupt level (IRQ) request conflict between the
  46.      diskette drive or hard disk controller and other devices
  47.      installed on your system.
  48.      A. Change IRQ levels to eliminate conflicts.
  49.  
  50.   4. The hard disk partition where you are installing OS/2 is
  51.      compressed with a DOS data compression program.
  52.      A. Use the data compression program to decompress the
  53.         partition, then restart the installation procedure.
  54.  
  55.   5. Traps, in general, are symptoms of software-related
  56.      problems.  After you have pursued these symptons from a
  57.      software failure prespspective, consider the potential of a
  58.      hardware cause relating to caches and memory such as:
  59.      A. If your computer has an 80486 microprocessor, your
  60.         computer may require faster RAM chips (60ns or 70ns).
  61.      B. There may be a problem with the external (level-2) CPU
  62.         memory cache or main memory system on ISA or EISA
  63.         systems.  From setup/diagnostics diskettes or BIOS Setup
  64.         program built into the computer, try disabling all shadow
  65.         RAM and external 9level-2) CPU memory cache.
  66.      C. If problems persist during the installation of OS/2 after
  67.         performing the above action, turn off the turbo switch,
  68.         if available,and disable caching during installation on
  69.         your system and retry the procedure.

  72. COUNTRY.SYS ERROR MESSAGE ON DISKETTE 1
  73.  
  74. You have redirected your drives for installing OS/2 and
  75. received the COUNTRY.SYS on diskette 1.
  76.  
  77. To redirect drives from B: to A&colon.,  you can change the CMOS
  78. or BIOS setup and switch cables on the diskette drives.
  79.  
  80. For COUNTRY.SYS error message on diskette 1 while redirecting:
  81.   Check cables to verify if there are correctly switched
  82.   Check the CMOS for necessary changes for switching drives
  83.  
  84. If problems or questions occur while doing this, contact the
  85. vendor of the system.
  86.

  88.  
  89. AFTER INSTALLING OS/2, SPECIFIC LINES ARE IGNORED:
  90.  
  91. 1. Check the line.  It may relate to a device driver that is
  92.    not being recognized.  Be sure you have the latest driver
  93.    available.   Ensure that it is present in the CONFIG.SYS and
  94.    in the OS/2 subdirectory or proper subdirectory.
  95.  
  96. 2. If you have a statement with a driver that is NOT needed,
  97.    you can use the REM command to remark out in the CONFIG.SYS.
  98.  
  99.  
  100.  
  101. COUNTRY.SYS CANNOT BE FOUND WHILE INSTALLING OS/2:
  102.  
  103. 1. If you have a device attached, for example, a tape backup,
  104.    modem, scanner, network card or any additional device it
  105.    is recommended during installation to disconnect them.
  106.  
  107. 2. Diskette drive or hard disk drive controller might not
  108.    reside at its own IRQ level.  OS/2 does NOT share IRQ
  109.    levels. If you have any IRQ conflict it is possible to
  110.    receive COUNTRY.SYS error message.  If you have a sound
  111.    card, check the IRQ, it may be in conflict with your
  112.    printer.
  113.  
  114. 3. If you have DOS with compressed files or double spaced, you
  115.    receive the COUNTRY.SYS error message.  It is recommended to
  116.    install OS/2 on another partition.
  117.  
  118. 4. If you have an OEM system (non-IBM or IBM compatible)
  119.    disable the following features:
  120.  
  121.      Turbo, Cache, Shadow RAM (Packard Bell need not disable)
  122.  
  123.    Be sure your video is in VGA mode, 640 X 480 resolutions,
  124.    8 bit slot, and autosensing disabled (if capable).
  125.  
  126.    If you are NOT using an ADAPTEC driver, check to see that
  127.    it is deleted in the CONFIG.SYS on diskette 1.
  128.  
  129.    Disconnect all devices such as tape drives, network cards,
  130.    scanners, modems, etc....
  131.  
  132.    If you still cannot install and are stopping before diskette 5
  133.    or restart:
  134. 1.  Make a DISKCOPY of Diskette 1 and edit the CONFIG.SYS
  135.     file. (DOS text editor can be used)  Type:
  136.                   REM IBM1S506.ADD.
  137.     This uses the IBMINT13.I13 driver.
  138. 2.  When installation completes, edit the CONFIG.SYS file on
  139.     Diskette 1.  Delete REM from the statement REM IBM1S506.ADD.
  140.     the statement should read, BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD.
  141. 3.  Restart your system.
  142. 4.  Open an OS/2 window.  Type:
  143.                  E CONFIG.SYS     and press Enter
  144. 5.  Make sure the BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD statement is not preceded
  145.     by REM, if it is delete the REM.
  146. 6.  Save the file and close the editor.
  147.  
  148.     Enable ALL features and devices after installation completes.
  149.

  152. COUNTRY.SYS ERROR UPON THE FINAL REBOOT:
  153.  
  154. 1. Check your CONFIG.SYS to be sure that you have a drive
  155.    letter so that the paths statements are recognized.
  156.        Examples to check are listed:
  157.  
  158.         EX:  where X:\ is drive where OS/2 resides
  159.  
  160.                SET USER_INI=X:\OS2\OS2.INI
  161.                SET SYSTEM_INI=X:\OS2\OS2SYS.INI
  162.  
  163.                (No duplicate statements should exist.
  164.             Delete or REM out the extra set or statement.)
  165.  
  166.          LIBPATH=X\..........  will have a long statement
  167.          PATH=X:\............  will have a long statement
  168.          DPATH=X:\...........  will have a long statement
  169.  
  170.          All DEVICE and RUN statement begin with drive letter:
  171.  
  172.          DEVICE=X:\OS2\.......statement will continue
  173.          RUN=X:\..............statement will continue
  174.  
  175.      If above statements appear with a drive letter where OS/2
  176.      resides, the CONFIG.SYS should the have correct drive
  177.      letters assignments.
  178.  
  179. 2. Check the CONFIG.SYS to ensure device statements are listed
  180.    for all device.
  181.

  183.  
  184. COUNTRY.SYS CANNOT BE FOUND WHEN BOOTING UP TO OS/2, WHICH
  185. HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY RUNNING FINE:
  186.  
  187. 1. For OS/2 2.1, see pages 134-135 in the "Installation Guide"
  188.    for instructions on Recovering the CONFIG.SYS file.
  189.  
  190.    For OS/2 WARP, see Users Guide, Chapter 15.
  191.  
  192. 2. If you have recently installed a new or different device,
  193.    recover the CONFIG.SYS.  Check the device for the correct
  194.    and latest driver for OS/2.  If necessary, call the vendor
  195.    a for possible update or necessary parameters.
  196.
