  19.      TalkLink  provides  the following capabilities for customers

  23.        boards  for  you to ask questions and help others with a
  24.        wide variety of products and services.  Items posted  on
  25.        this  bulletin  board  are shared between BBS users, IBM
  26.        personnel and affiliates worldwide.
  27.      -  Customer-to-customer messaging  --  customers  can  send
  28.        private messages to each other.
  29.      -  Support   --  customers  can submit or view problem re-
  30.        ports.  These entries  will  be  responded  to  by  the
  31.        conference/forum  owner,  normally within a certain time
  32.        period. Users can also place orders for product  related
  33.        materials.
  34.      -  Software  library  -- downloads application programs and
  35.        uploads contributions.
  36.      -  News and announcements --  contains  recent  information
  37.        regarding products and services.

  41.        -  Batch  -- Users can download  the  forums  to  their
  42.          personal  computer  and  read the entries  offline.

  184. Netware "herd" mentality running amok in my company now (vbg).

  189. As we start to look at functions available in add-on packages, it really
  190. is not right to compare, say, an async comm pack for remote access with
  191. async queue sharing on LS (which IS an exclusive).  If we must get a
  192. package from another vendor, how many vendors do we want to have pointing
  193. fingers at each other when an error occurs?  OK, I'll mention LAN
  194. Distance, LAN NetDoor, CID (LAD/2 if you wish), LAN NetView (which
  195. includes NW management functions as a SUBSET), etc.  A look at OS/2
  196. Professional magazine shows many backup/restore products -- including
  197. Cheyanne Software's package which is the most popular one for NW.
  198.  
  199. When looking for these packages, look for OS/2 packages, not just LS
  200. ones (our certification program is just getting off the ground), after
  201. all, LS is not just a file server.  It is a full function client server
  202. platform running on the most advanced operating system shipping today.

  204. Speaking of operating systems, I notice more and more news stories about
  205. M$ divorcing from its 'partners'.  Interesting, as they continue to get
  206. more and more 'in control' of every piece of a system (server, client,
  207. database, comm, compilers, etc) they are starting to remind me of a tank.
  208. Designed for offense, built to run over anything that gets in the way,...
  209. And the first thing you do to defeat a tankis to get the crew to 'button
  210. up' so you can get them more easily.  Then, one man can knock it out...
  211.  
  212. As long as I am running on on a variety of topics, let me add one more.
  213. A while back, I noted that LS was pretty much ignored by Z-D.  Well, they
  214. mentioned it!  PC Magazine, Network Edition (4/26, page 238, 1st col).
  215. To save you the trouble, I quote.  "Our specification excludes the server
  216. based NOSs that we review periodically, such as Novell's NetWare and
  217. Banyan's VINES, and products such as Digital's Pathworks and IBM's LAN
  218. Server...".  How 'bout that?  OK, so they were pointing out the fact
  219. that they ignore LS, but they DID mention it.  Why, I may have the
  220. issue bronzed....

  272. utilities don't work, but this indicates they do/should.  Is this the

  280. Question : Is it possible ( all the existing doc's couldn't answer my
  281.       question ) to run just the VT 340 emulation with Pathworks for
  282.       OS/2 with ||||| CM and an Ethernet card (e.g. 3COM 523 / 509)

  284. A guy over here said it's not possible to get it run, because both PW and
  285. CM uses the same Station ID. Solution 2 Ethercard :-))  ?|? or Token-Ring
  286. ( kind of difficult if you want to switch 1200 PC's ) or not to run CM.
  287. He said it could perhaps possible to start just the emulation ( LAT ) but
  288. he never tried it. Someone else said it should run under OS/2 2.0 but 2.1
  289. is too time critical. ONCE AGAIN CM and PW with Ethernet is the question
  290. ( we need just the terminal emulation ). We tried it with PW 2.0 |||
  291. maybe PW 2.0b or c does it. All the PC have have ( not a must || ) LAN-
  292. Requester 2.0 or 3.0 ( IBM-produkt, not MICROSOFT ||| )

  323. free) LAN Server certification testing available.  So, if you go, be sure
  324. to brush up on your CLI -- and drop in on the BOF (Brainshare?) to be
  325. held the night before (not planned to be a cram session, by the way) to
  326. stock up on other interesting tidbits of info...  And, Good Luck!

  342. in Orlando.

  427. The limit is set using the NET USER command, with the MAXSTORAGE
  428. parameter.  Check the command reference.  This does not really limit the
  429. user, but allows you to see who has exceeded the value by running the
  430. CHKSTOR program.

  447.   I haven't tried it on a true standalone, but trying it at the server
  448. while no one is logged on seems to me to be just like a standalone. I
  449. will call Pioneer to see what they say, but I got a feeling (since there
  450. was only DOS & MAC stuff in the Doc) that they'll be clueless at first
  451. until I male it clear it is going to be on an OS/2 machine.

  466. Yup, we do... no problems with the Pioneers, but I am having some
  467. difficulty with a four Toshiba 3401 drive tower attached to the same
  468. server as the three 604Xs.  The Pioneers work fine, but I get errors
  469. accessing the Toshibas and haven't had the time (or the need yet <g>)
  470. to find out why the Toshibas don't work.

  477.  Can you append IBMLAN.INI, CONFIG.SYS, and Hardware on that server?
  478. I am especially interested in the SCSI devices, CPU, and T/R card.  I
  479. have the hard drive as 6, int tape (IBM 4MM DAT) as 3, Pioneer as 2,
  480. Hitachi 1 as 1, and Hitachi 2 as 0.  All of these are attached to the
  481. IBM SCSI that came with the 80-A31.  Of course, any other insights are
  482. appreciated as well.

  494. We have had a 604 shared on the network since right after OS/2 2.0 was
  495. released and have had no problems with it what so ever.  I had actually
  496. installed the box on my standalone machine during the EEP program for
  497. 2.0.  The only thing that I can find that we had to do special was add
  498. the parm /ET to the .add for the the UltraStor driver for the adapter we
  499. are using.

  510. Is there anything else on the SCSI card except the 604X?  My SCSI card is
  511. pretty clogged with the Hard Drive, int tape backup and two other CD's.
  512. Do you have more specific info on the Ultrastor such as estimated price,
  513. Model/Part #.  If I can get one from my hardware vendor to try I would
  514. like to.  Or do you think it better to get another IBM SCSI and configure
  515. with that.

  744. A couple of times our DC has given us an error message of NET8232 when

  747. always practical as soon as the problem occurs.  The NET8232 says to wait
  748. until the add'l server is started before attempting to logoff.  The 3
  749. add'l servers are all started (a NET START SERVER at all 3 verifies this)
  750. We do have a Backup DC.  All servers are at IP07001 and 2.1 Golden.

  860. NET.EXE and CMD.EXE to filter out (and reject) some commands that an
  861. administrator may execute using NET ADMIN.  I do this inserting of my
  862. .exe by pointing COMSPEC to it, and thus NET.EXE calls me instead of
  863. CMD.EXE directly.  I thus intercept ALL the arguments NET.EXE sends
  864. when a NET ADMIN is issued.  My question is this: I have noticed that
  865. NET.EXE tacks some of its own arguments on AFTER the specified command,
  866. either 3 extra ones or 4 (that I have ever seen); will these extra
  867. arguments ALWAYS be there, and will they ALWAYS be the same (on the

  896. I have found is that when you are allocating netbios recources in the
  897. protocol.ini, the total amount of memory that all the resources take up
  898. HAVE to be <= 64K.  We have LANStreamer cards in our LAN Server
  899. and we are only able to get about 180 sessions and names before
  900. we get errors when we boot up.  All of this is explained in the
  901. manuals that come with LAN Server.  Good Luck.

  923. is until Nov 29, 1993, when I left to come to work here at MCI.  I used
  924. to support this product.  Granted, it has been a few months since I've
  925. worked with the product but here are some things to check.

  927. 1)  There are major problems with the LANStreamer cards from IBM. (I
  928. assume you are using the LANStreamer/32 cards)  IBM fixed the
  929. problem last Oct 22 but if your like we are, we just received our
  930. servers and they still came with the old cards.  IBM has told us that
  931. June 1 is the expected ship date for the new cards and in the
  932. meantime we had to increase the DMA to 1 and turn fairness off
  933. on our cards to prevent data corruption.  You may want to give IBM
  934. a call for more info.
  935. 2)  There's a utility on DISK #1 of the install package for ADW that
  936. will go out and give you information regarding your netbios setup.

  972. software running on the DOS and Windows machines.   The connection
  973. between the ThinkPad and PS/2 with OS/2 will involve a 9-pin connection
  974. into the serial port on the ThinkPad which will have a DB-25 with 10
  975. pins going to a printer terminal interposer with output to a gender
  976. changer which has 25 sockets which will finally go into the PS/2 machine.

  983. want to establish a lan using the serial port?  If so, I don't think
  984. that LAPS has "Serial" support within it.

  1013. I have an LS 3.0 server with an attached 4039 10R. There
  1014. are 2 print objects defined, one for PostScript and one
  1015. for PCL5, with both pointing to LPT1. The printer always
  1016. detects which mode to use, so everything's fine.

  1018. I added an OS/2 requester, defining 2 network printers to
  1019. it, one for each mode. This was working fine as well, for
  1020. a while. Recently, I began to be unable to print PS from
  1021. the req. The output was going to the correct queue, but
  1022. using the PCL5 printer instead of the PS printer (I hope
  1023. I've got my terms right here). After much frustration and
  1024. fiddling, I got the PS print to work by deleting both
  1025. printers from the server and requester, deleting the alias
  1026. for the PCL5 printer, and recreating the PS printers on
  1027. both systems. Then I added the PCL5 alias and printers
  1028. back, and everything still works. The strange thing is
  1029. that the PCL5 now goes to the PCL5 queue but uses the PS
  1030. printer. This is the opposite of when PS didn't work, but
  1031. at least in this scenario both modes seem to print OK.

  1034. the same device (LPT1), network printing uses whichever

  1045. IBMNULL driver.  Then setup 2 printer queues on the requester one using

  1062. happening much more often.  We have a multi-server environment with
  1063. about 120 users.  It seems that the same users keep getting a message
  1064. at time of logon that "One or more of your aliases have failed".  They
  1065. logoff and logon, and same thing.  Yet, they can issue the correct NET
  1066. USE commands and attach to the missing aliases.

  1090. I had the same problem at my old company when we upgraded
  1091. versions of LS.  I had to go into each users logon file assignments
  1092. and redo each of their setup to fix the problem as something had
  1093. clobbered our DCDB.  Once this was done, we had no problem.

  1148.  I'm experiencing some problems with the multi-logon feature of LAN
  1149. Server 3.0.  I wish to inhibit users from logging on from more than 1
  1150. workstation at a time.  The multilogon parameter is set to 'No' as per
  1151. the documentation.  Everything works as expected if the user logs
  1152. in via the LOGON.EXE command. i.e. Says "User already logged on at
  1153. another workstation."  However,using the LAN Server API,
  1154. NetWkstatSetUID2 (pg. 3-274 of LAN Server API Ref.), to do the logon
  1155. allows multi-logons despite the IBMLAN.INI setting.  Is this a bug
  1156. or if there something else I'm required to do when using the API?

  1225. Is the automatic reconnect of Home directories being looked at?  I know
  1226. that if they were defined as alias's it would be no problem but ours
  1227. are not done that way.  The reason I ask is we just had a nasty server
  1228. outage.  All of our alias' reconnected when the server returned except
  1229. for the home directory.  If it would also reconnect it would help make
  1230. the system look more robust instead of us having to tell the users to
  1231. logoff and log back in again to fix their problem. Views anyone?

  1240. rearrange anything; leave them defined as home directories, just as they are.

  1291. We have 3 out of 13 printer alias' which we were moving from one server
  1292. to a dedicated print server.  We deleted the alias and now when we try
  1293. to recreate it we get a NET9817 error message.  It states that the alias
  1294. is already being shared.  Not true.  At least I can't find it anywhere.
  1295. We have shut all of our servers down and restarted them.  If I use a new
  1296. name for the alias everything work fine.  This is happening on 3 out of

  1367. workstations from which you want to do this.  You then have to find a
  1368. C programmer to write a program to the API's to do the net use.  This is
  1369. what we did and it works great.

  1388. There is supposed to be a CSD to bring LS 30 up to 3.01 but it isn't
  1389. quite ready yet.  However I believe that you can get the new packages
