TALKLINK
Welcome to the world of TalkLink, a unique, new conferencing
service offered by IBM. Using TalkLink, you can "talk" to
customers, IBMers and personnel of our many affiliates
around the world - anywhere, anytime. TalkLink is designed
for people like yourself, who want to get the most out of
their investment in computing products and services.
TalkLink "links" you directly into the development and sup-
port communities of customers, IBM and affiliates. Our goal
is to help you be as effective as you can with access to
many conferences, vast databases and rich libraries.
HIGHLIGHTS
TalkLink provides the following capabilities for customers
to review information electronically, submit questions re-
quests and receive answers information.
- Conferences and forums -- question and answer bulletin
boards for you to ask questions and help others with a
wide variety of products and services. Items posted on
this bulletin board are shared between BBS users, IBM
personnel and affiliates worldwide.
- Customer-to-customer messaging -- customers can send
private messages to each other.
- Support -- customers can submit or view problem re-
ports. These entries will be responded to by the
conference/forum owner, normally within a certain time
period. Users can also place orders for product related
materials.
- Software library -- downloads application programs and
uploads contributions.
- News and announcements -- contains recent information
regarding products and services.
- Modes of operation:
- Interactive -- Users are connected online to
TalkLink while using its facilities.
- Batch -- Users can download the forums to their
personal computer and read the entries offline.
Users can also respond offline and the entries will
be saved and sent to the host the next time the user
is connected in batch mode. Initially, this facil-
ity is available for OS/2 (R) users only.
- Access:
1
- Advantis -- local call from most cities within the
US.
- Internet -- telnet avaialable now, full ftp soon.
SEARCH SERVICE
- Search IBM databases via interactive mode -- This search
facility includes a large question and answer database
of items, IBM System Center Flashes, and IBM's prob-
lem management libraries. This database contains infor-
mation about problems and fixes. Not all general
discussion forums have related information in these da-
tabases.
TALKLINK FEES CHARGES
- $15.00 Registration Fee (one-time charge for each user
registration)

No pitch would be complete without one ... If you're real enough
I might even use it to help defend my little LS group from the
Netware "herd" mentality running amok in my company now (vbg).
**********************************************************************
Keith Blake (The OS/2 Mole) V: (513) 983-8119 (IBMMAIL/USPGC9GC)
As we start to look at functions available in add-on packages, it really
is not right to compare, say, an async comm pack for remote access with
async queue sharing on LS (which IS an exclusive). If we must get a
package from another vendor, how many vendors do we want to have pointing
fingers at each other when an error occurs? OK, I'll mention LAN
Distance, LAN NetDoor, CID (LAD/2 if you wish), LAN NetView (which
includes NW management functions as a SUBSET), etc. A look at OS/2
Professional magazine shows many backup/restore products -- including
Cheyanne Software's package which is the most popular one for NW.
When looking for these packages, look for OS/2 packages, not just LS
ones (our certification program is just getting off the ground), after
all, LS is not just a file server. It is a full function client server
platform running on the most advanced operating system shipping today.
Speaking of operating systems, I notice more and more news stories about
M$ divorcing from its 'partners'. Interesting, as they continue to get
more and more 'in control' of every piece of a system (server, client,
database, comm, compilers, etc) they are starting to remind me of a tank.
Designed for offense, built to run over anything that gets in the way,...
And the first thing you do to defeat a tankis to get the crew to 'button
up' so you can get them more easily. Then, one man can knock it out...
As long as I am running on on a variety of topics, let me add one more.
A while back, I noted that LS was pretty much ignored by Z-D. Well, they
mentioned it! PC Magazine, Network Edition (4/26, page 238, 1st col).
To save you the trouble, I quote. "Our specification excludes the server
based NOSs that we review periodically, such as Novell's NetWare and
Banyan's VINES, and products such as Digital's Pathworks and IBM's LAN
Server...". How 'bout that? OK, so they were pointing out the fact
that they ignore LS, but they DID mention it. Why, I may have the
issue bronzed....
Since the topic of the article was peer systems, it is probably just as
well, anyway...

Hi to all the Dec-Experts
Question : Is it possible ( all the existing doc's couldn't answer my
question ) to run just the VT 340 emulation with Pathworks for
OS/2 with ||||| CM and an Ethernet card (e.g. 3COM 523 / 509)
A guy over here said it's not possible to get it run, because both PW and
CM uses the same Station ID. Solution 2 Ethercard :-)) ?|? or Token-Ring
( kind of difficult if you want to switch 1200 PC's ) or not to run CM.
He said it could perhaps possible to start just the emulation ( LAT ) but
he never tried it. Someone else said it should run under OS/2 2.0 but 2.1
is too time critical. ONCE AGAIN CM and PW with Ethernet is the question
( we need just the terminal emulation ). We tried it with PW 2.0 |||
maybe PW 2.0b or c does it. All the PC have have ( not a must || ) LAN-
Requester 2.0 or 3.0 ( IBM-produkt, not MICROSOFT ||| )
Thanks to all the rare experts who give me an idea.

Tom,
If that is the case I can probably make that fairly easily. Had heard
Atlanta, and had received an offer for an upgrade on something that also
included $100 off the price of the fall conference, but said it would be
in Orlando, which I actually think would be a better choice. Oh well
which ever quess I will be there.

FWIW, I understand that the Interchanges will have discounted (maybe even
free) LAN Server certification testing available. So, if you go, be sure
to brush up on your CLI -- and drop in on the BOF (Brainshare?) to be
held the night before (not planned to be a cram session, by the way) to
stock up on other interesting tidbits of info... And, Good Luck!
Hmmm, if there are six $100 tests and they are free, what does the conf
cost again....?

If it was the same mailing I got, it was a DB2 conference that was going to be
in Orlando.
I wish I had concrete information about the Fall TIC. At this point, I've
heard:
None
New Orleans
Orlando
Atlanta
and I haven't heard any dates at all.

Looking forward to attending _and_ would like to schedule the rest of our
summer. What with the NJ, NY, and PA RenFests, the Ohio Light Opera and the
Munchkin convention (and some year we'd like to make the Ozmapolitan), having
an undated event tends to make us nervous.

Kevin,
I haven't tried it on a true standalone, but trying it at the server
while no one is logged on seems to me to be just like a standalone. I
will call Pioneer to see what they say, but I got a feeling (since there
was only DOS & MAC stuff in the Doc) that they'll be clueless at first
until I male it clear it is going to be on an OS/2 machine.
Does anyone out there have a Pioneer Multi-Changer shared?
What sort of problems have you experienced (and documented?)?

re:

Yup, we do... no problems with the Pioneers, but I am having some
difficulty with a four Toshiba 3401 drive tower attached to the same
server as the three 604Xs. The Pioneers work fine, but I get errors
accessing the Toshibas and haven't had the time (or the need yet <g>)
to find out why the Toshibas don't work.

Scott,
Can you append IBMLAN.INI, CONFIG.SYS, and Hardware on that server?
I am especially interested in the SCSI devices, CPU, and T/R card. I
have the hard drive as 6, int tape (IBM 4MM DAT) as 3, Pioneer as 2,
Hitachi 1 as 1, and Hitachi 2 as 0. All of these are attached to the
IBM SCSI that came with the 80-A31. Of course, any other insights are
appreciated as well.

Thomas,
We have had a 604 shared on the network since right after OS/2 2.0 was
released and have had no problems with it what so ever. I had actually
installed the box on my standalone machine during the EEP program for
2.0. The only thing that I can find that we had to do special was add
the parm /ET to the .add for the the UltraStor driver for the adapter we
are using.

Jack,
Is there anything else on the SCSI card except the 604X? My SCSI card is
pretty clogged with the Hard Drive, int tape backup and two other CD's.
Do you have more specific info on the Ultrastor such as estimated price,
Model/Part #. If I can get one from my hardware vendor to try I would
like to. Or do you think it better to get another IBM SCSI and configure
with that.

Hardware is PS/2 Model 8595; CPU 486/50; Memory 32mb, Hard disk 1GB
at SCSI ID 6 on SCSI adapter 1; two Pioneer 604Xs on SCSI adapter 1
at SCSI IDs 5 and 4 respectively; one 604x on SCSI adapter 2 at SCSI
ID 1; one four CD-ROM tower (Toshiba 3401s) at SCSI IDs 6 - 3 respectively.
Sorry, but the server is running in production, and I can't get you any
specifics on the ROM addresses for the TIC, or SCSI adapters.
In my last post, I think I mentioned not being able to access the 3401s
properly... Either I've totally lost my mind (quite possible <g>) or the
problem has somehow cured itself, because the 3401s are now accessable
again... go figure. At any rate, if you need the info on the TIC and
SCSI adapters, I can try to get them for you later when I get a chance
to reboot the server. Let me know.

We are experiencing an infrequent problem on our domain controller.
A couple of times our DC has given us an error message of NET8232 when
attempting to log off. This has happened after the server has been up
for at least 21 days. A reboot always cures the problem, but is not
always practical as soon as the problem occurs. The NET8232 says to wait
until the add'l server is started before attempting to logoff. The 3
add'l servers are all started (a NET START SERVER at all 3 verifies this)
We do have a Backup DC. All servers are at IP07001 and 2.1 Golden.
Has anyone else seen this? Any workarounds? Any reasons why? Any more
support info needed? Thanks.

What network resources are available in a DOS or WINOS@ session. This

This sounds like a configuration problem. You set the number
of sessions and command available in a DOS box with a program
called LTSVCFG.COM. It resides in the IBMCOM directory. I

Here's a question that hopefully is an easy one. Occassionally when I
log on in the morning, the only thing that I get is my home directory.
I don't get Public Apps, I don't get my printer and I don't get about
a dozen drive assignments. It's quickly cured by logging off and logging

Hello. I am writing a 'command filter' of sorts that will sit between
NET.EXE and CMD.EXE to filter out (and reject) some commands that an
administrator may execute using NET ADMIN. I do this inserting of my
.exe by pointing COMSPEC to it, and thus NET.EXE calls me instead of
CMD.EXE directly. I thus intercept ALL the arguments NET.EXE sends
when a NET ADMIN is issued. My question is this: I have noticed that
NET.EXE tacks some of its own arguments on AFTER the specified command,
either 3 extra ones or 4 (that I have ever seen); will these extra
arguments ALWAYS be there, and will they ALWAYS be the same (on the
same server)? The answer may be classified, if so please send to me
directly or call me. If my question is not clear, let me know! Thanks!

We have installed in a LAN Server two T/R adapters: one 16/4 II and one
LANStreamer. The reason is, that we need a huge netbios ressources
because of Netview/DM. We realized now, that in the protocol.ini
there is only one entry in netbios section, used by all adapters.
This means, that we can not specify more resources that are valid for
the 16/4 adapter| right? Or we install two LANStreamer, that we can
use more. right?

Peter, I would have thought that there would have been 2 distinct
sections in your protocol.ini file, one for the T/R II and one for the
LANStreamer, each with their own, sperate netbios resources. What
I have found is that when you are allocating netbios recources in the
protocol.ini, the total amount of memory that all the resources take up
HAVE to be <= 64K. We have LANStreamer cards in our LAN Server
and we are only able to get about 180 sessions and names before
we get errors when we boot up. All of this is explained in the
manuals that come with LAN Server. Good Luck.

When you put your NetBIOS resources requirements into PROTOCOL.INI
EACH adapter gets the same numbers. If you say 200 sessions, 255
commands and 100 names, you willl get that many on each of the adapters
and your system will have twice the number (400,510,200) you specify.

Steve, I used to be part of KWI Customer support organization, that
is until Nov 29, 1993, when I left to come to work here at MCI. I used
to support this product. Granted, it has been a few months since I've
worked with the product but here are some things to check.
1) There are major problems with the LANStreamer cards from IBM. (I
assume you are using the LANStreamer/32 cards) IBM fixed the
problem last Oct 22 but if your like we are, we just received our
servers and they still came with the old cards. IBM has told us that
June 1 is the expected ship date for the new cards and in the
meantime we had to increase the DMA to 1 and turn fairness off
on our cards to prevent data corruption. You may want to give IBM
a call for more info.
2) There's a utility on DISK #1 of the install package for ADW that
will go out and give you information regarding your netbios setup.
Forgive me but I forgot the name of the program. The KWI support
center "should" be able to give you this information.
If you do call, tell everyone I said HEY!!!! :-)

I would like to link my 3 computers together using IBM's LAN Server 3.0.
These computers are a desktop PS/2 running OS/2, 2.1, a Model 700C
Thinkpad running DOS and a Ps/2 Model P70 (386-based) running Windows.
This is an experimental kind of thing at home to give me experience with
the LAN Server 3.0 while I learn something in the process. Since the
700C doesn't have the PCMCIA card, I would like to know exactly all of
the software and hardware needed to do this. I understand that I
will need the LAN Server running on the OS/2 machine and the Requester
software running on the DOS and Windows machines. The connection
between the ThinkPad and PS/2 with OS/2 will involve a 9-pin connection
into the serial port on the ThinkPad which will have a DB-25 with 10
pins going to a printer terminal interposer with output to a gender
changer which has 25 sockets which will finally go into the PS/2 machine.
I'm not sure what will go from the PS/2 to the P70. Anyway, please
give me your ideas. Bud Bradford, HOB AT AUSVM8, 512-823-8094, Austin.

Thanks.
I'm not sure if I understand you correctly. Are you saying that you
want to establish a lan using the serial port? If so, I don't think
that LAPS has "Serial" support within it.
The first thing that you need to do is setup the LAN physical layer
(Token Ring/Broadband/Baseband etc, etc). Then you need to get that
installed on all your machines. For the 700c you might want to go with
a Xircom adapter (or simular). They have drivers for DOS and/or OS/2.
Then after that, install laps/lan server/requester.

commands to itself, you could use the LOOPBACK driver.
I have an LS 3.0 server with an attached 4039 10R. There
are 2 print objects defined, one for PostScript and one
for PCL5, with both pointing to LPT1. The printer always
detects which mode to use, so everything's fine.
I added an OS/2 requester, defining 2 network printers to
it, one for each mode. This was working fine as well, for
a while. Recently, I began to be unable to print PS from
the req. The output was going to the correct queue, but
using the PCL5 printer instead of the PS printer (I hope
I've got my terms right here). After much frustration and
fiddling, I got the PS print to work by deleting both
printers from the server and requester, deleting the alias
for the PCL5 printer, and recreating the PS printers on
both systems. Then I added the PCL5 alias and printers
back, and everything still works. The strange thing is
that the PCL5 now goes to the PCL5 queue but uses the PS
printer. This is the opposite of when PS didn't work, but
at least in this scenario both modes seem to print OK.
It appears that since both printer objects are pointing to
the same device (LPT1), network printing uses whichever
was created first. Is this true? Is there a way to avoid
this confusion? Is there a better way to enable printing
in both modes on the same printer? I haven't found much
helpful in the docs, so thanks in advance from one who's
flying by the seat of his pants.

Tim, You could try this. Set up one printer on the server. Use the
IBMNULL driver. Then setup 2 printer queues on the requester one using
PS and one PCL5. This should then work. The IBMNULL driver will just
pass whatever it receives to the printer and it will do the switching.
Hope this helps.

This may be related to one of the recent questions posted, but mine is
happening much more often. We have a multi-server environment with
about 120 users. It seems that the same users keep getting a message
at time of logon that "One or more of your aliases have failed". They
logoff and logon, and same thing. Yet, they can issue the correct NET
USE commands and attach to the missing aliases.
If this is a "bug", I am hoping that 3.01 will correct this. If it is
not a bug, I'm open to suggestions. I had just finished downloading all
the patches when I read about 3.01, so I figured I would wait and apply
the changes "cleanly" instead of piece by piece. Thanks!

Brian, have you just recently upgraded the code on your servers?
I had the same problem at my old company when we upgraded

and redo each of their setup to fix the problem as something had
clobbered our DCDB. Once this was done, we had no problem.

I'm experiencing some problems with the multi-logon feature of LAN
Server 3.0. I wish to inhibit users from logging on from more than 1
workstation at a time. The multilogon parameter is set to 'No' as per
the documentation. Everything works as expected if the user logs
in via the LOGON.EXE command. i.e. Says "User already logged on at
another workstation." However, using the LAN Server API,
NetWkstatSetUID2 (pg. 3-274 of LAN Server API Ref.), to do the logon
allows multi-logons despite the IBMLAN.INI setting. Is this a bug
or if there something else I'm required to do when using the API?
I notice there is a return code from the API called NERR_AlreadyLoggedOn.
Thanks..

OK, Here's the scoop. I am trying to install a server that will be

Now I'm frustrated about having LS 3.0 & fixes as i *JUST* received the

was the reason for ordering it as opposed to the Additional Licence...)
But...What do I install now?
And What do I install for the Base OS?? OS/2 GA, OS/2 GA&fixes, OS/2
GA & SP ???
This normally would not be such a burning question but I don't want to go
out remotely more than I have to.

Is the automatic reconnect of Home directories being looked at? I know
that if they were defined as alias's it would be no problem but ours
are not done that way. The reason I ask is we just had a nasty server
outage. All of our alias' reconnected when the server returned except
for the home directory. If it would also reconnect it would help make
the system look more robust instead of us having to tell the users to
logoff and log back in again to fix their problem. Views anyone?

For what it's worth, if you just make the home directories aliases named
Нuserid┘, shared at server startup, they will reconnect. You don't have to
rearrange anything; leave them defined as home directories, just as they are.
Just also define them as aliases named Нuserid┘.
The problem isn't that home directories don't reconnect -- it's that things
that aren't shared at server startup time don't reconnect. At a guess, home
directories are implicitly share-when-required.

Does anyone know if Lotus has a CID enabled version of their install
routine for cc:Mail yet? I have seen in some documents that they have
a direction to support this but don't know if they have yet.

Thomas, Could it be that your logon Icon that you are using has some
extra stuff in the parameters or working diretory field under the
setting? Just an idea..

Julian,
I tried finding something strange, but there's nothing there. Also, the
title bar for the help window that tells me the path is not found states
Workplace Shell, so it appears to be a workplace shell error.

Bob, What you have to do is load the Virtual DOS LAN API support on the
workstations from which you want to do this. You then have to find a
C programmer to write a program to the API's to do the net use. This is
what we did and it works great.

John, get LS 3.01. This is supposed to fix the Backup DC problems.
There is supposed to be a CSD to bring LS 30 up to 3.01 but it isn't
quite ready yet. However I believe that you can get the new packages
with it already incorporated. I am sure someone will correct me if I
am wrong.

Is there a tool out there of recent vintage which provides
function (managing LAN server resources, aliases and drive letters)
comparable to the GIME tool on OS2TOOLS? This tool is vintage

The DOS LAN Requestor install program will not run on a machine with MS-
DOS 6.2 installed. DOSCHK reports an incorrect DOS version. Using
SETVER doesn't help. What do I do???
