Volume 3635 & Volume 3636 MUSE Database program.
MUSE is a program for authors and their agents to organize the circulation of
manuscripts publishers. It is a very specialized data base which helps keep
track of publishers' responses as well as current mailings. It also mail
merges the address in the files with appropriate form letters.
NOTE : a harddisk is usefull for this (600K) program
NOTE : you must study the 30 page manual before using this program
NOTE : for quick installation, unarc everything with ARC E *.ARC and
start first the MUSE4 (installation) program.
What MUSES Does
A. MUSES circulates manuscripts.
MUSES circulates up to 5 titles to one publisher.
MUSES allows you to divide your manuscripts into two categories (for
example, prose/poetry; fiction/nonfiction...), or you may group all
manuscripts together.
MUSES allows you to circulate under two names, or you may ignore this
choice, and use just one. If you choose to use two, MUSES keeps up with
your choice with any material, and prints any letters accordingly.
MUSES keeps up with you own name and address and your own printer
requirements. It allows you to install a second printer for envelopes, so
that you can use a primary printer for documents with form-feed paper.
You install all information once, and may never have to do so again unless
you move or buy a new printer. You may also install still several versions
on different disks, if you use still more pen names, more manuscript types,
or more printers.
B. MUSES catalogs publishers.
MUSES stores publishers in 5 categories.
C. MUSES monitors queries.
MUSES keeps up with when you query--those considering and those who have
accepted but not yet published. It considers a publisher potentially
`delinquent' who has not responded to a submission after three months, or
who has not published for three months after acceptance. It allows you to
review only the delinquent (or all, if you prefer) to decide whom to query.
MUSES reminds you that you need to review any delinquent current publishers
if you have not reviewed them within a week, any delinquent acceptors if you
have not reviewed them within the last three months.
D. MUSES writes letters:
1. COVER.LET (when you submit)
2. ACCEPT.LET (when someone accepts)
3. QUERY1.LET (when someone delays decision)
4. QUERY3.LET (when an acceptor delays publishing)
5. SNIDE.LET (when someone rejects)
6. PUBCY.LET (when you need to tell about publication)
All letter texts require ASCII, a standard code for texts. Beware:
WordStar prepares texts in a different format (unless you use the Non-
Document mode).
E. MUSES prints manuscripts.
The program prints texts prepared with a word-processor, with a variety of
headers and footers. It requires ASCII text.
Some will prefer to print documents from their own word-processors. MUSES
still provides you with an alphabetized list of any manuscripts affected by
decisions which you have made in using the program. It prints this list to
the screen and also stores it as a `daily report' in a disk file.
F. MUSES summarizes data.
After any option on the main menu, the program summarizes all actions and
names the summary with the name of the date. For example, 12-29-19 stores
the summary of MUSES's action for 29th December of the current year.
If you use several options at any sitting, the program appends the new
reports, and does not overwrite the earlier ones.
You can print these reports to paper, as you can print any other ASCII text
(see above), or leave them merely for electronic reference.
G. MUSES tallies circulation.
The program automatically totals for the current month and for up to 12
previous months:
No. of new manuscripts
No. of circulations
No. of acceptances
No. of publications
No. of rejections/withdrawals
H. MUSES specializes bibliographies.
When someone publishes your material, MUSES reorganizes data files: It now
alphabetizes manuscript title, not by publisher. MUSES reformats the data
and sorts it. It prepares a disk file which you can edit with your word-
processor.
