Saves Time, Money, and Disk Space
Almost by magic, NewSpace recodes the data in the files on your
hard disk so that it takes up much less space.
Because your data is compressed (typically to about half its
uncompressed size), you can keep more active data on your hard
disk. With NewSpace, you don't have to spend time archiving data
to diskette or tape to get more disk space, or invoking a special
program whenever you need to use one of your compressed files.
And you don't have to buy a new, larger hard disk.
NewSpace works on any hard disk. If you get a bigger disk
or a
new computer system, you can run NewSpace on it.
Once it's installed, NewSpace works completely automatically. It
keeps track of which files should be compressed and which should-
n't. It compresses new files as they're created, and
uncompresses the data as your programs need it, all without you
doing anything.
NewSpace is completely invisible in your day-to-day operations.
As you use your computer, neither you nor your programs will be
aware that your files are compressed.
Reviewer's Note:
This kind of program is the most drastic compression system, much
more 'automatical' than things like ARC and ZIP. Do not use ARC and
ZIP on files on a Newspace'd HD, they do not give any improvements.
Use is, however, RISKY. The authors warn for combination with
disk caches (e.g. Fastopen), tricky backup programs like Fastback,
TSR's and multitaskers. Under some circumstances you risk loosing
ALL of your harddisk data. This is due to the architecture
of this
kind of utilities, PC-DOS and YOUR discipline in usage. If you follow
the guidelines in the manual carefully, there isn't much that can
go wrong.
ONE thing that proved to go wrong in our tests: if you write to a
Compressed harddisk, and get an "Abort, Retry, Ignore" message from DOS
(e.g. a bad floppy you're copying from), do NOT give "Abort". Compress
does NOT close its directory correctly afterwards, and you loose a
number of files on the HD!
