  20.      Desktop is just that...a simulation of one manager's desktop.  What we do
  21. involves (a) getting phone messages, (b) making  and keeping (sometimes)
  22. appointments, (c) doodling and calculating on a scratchpad, (d) running a
  23. consulting business in addition to my other work which requires tracking
  24. client time, and  (e) writing memos and letters.  Essentially, Desktop manages 
  25. these functions in a simple but effective manner.  Desktop is  divided into
  26. five functional areas (and several other support  ones, like the instructions
  27. on-line), is menu-driven for ease of  use, makes heavy use of 1-2-3's macro
  28. and programming capabilities, and is able to print what is recorded if a
  29. printer is  connected to the computer.  
  30.    Here's how it works in brief.  See INSTRUCT.WKS on Volume 2065  for a
  31. tutorial. (Note: Obtain volume 2064 and 2065 together for a  complete set.)

  33.    1.  Messages
  34.  
  35.     Use this part of the screen to track your phone messages and
  36. to-dos. You can use some of 1-2-3's advanced find and extract  capabilities to
  37. find messages.  To do this, hit the F5 function  key, type FINDIT, and then
  38. RETURN.  Enter the criteria you want.   For instance, to find only records
  39. pertinent to Consulting, enter
  40. "Consult" under the Category label, then choose messages for the  finding to
  41. be done.

  45.      3.  Client Tracking
  46.      You may be in a business in which you have clients, or people
  47. you see which generate income for you.  Alternatively, you might be a
  48. salesman with accounts that you call on.  This little spreadsheet
  49. allows rather simple tracking of such affairs.

  51.     4.  Memos and Letters
  52.       Either by typing F5 and then 'MEMO' or from the main menu, you
  53. have available to you an approximately two-page 8 and 1/2 by 11 space
  54. to write letters and memos.  1-2-3 was not designed specifically for
  55. such work, but does a pretty good job with short documents.  Here's
  56. how to make it work.

  58.      5.  Scratchpad
  59.  
  60.      Scratchpad is another 8 and 1/2 by 11 area you can write on,
  61. print, and the like for notes or whatever marks you need to make on
  62. electronic paper.  It doesn't have any entry macros associated with
  63. it, because it is unclear how you might use it.

  65.      Desktop is a template for Lotus Development Corporation's 
  66. 1-2-3 application program. It will run under either DOS 1.1 or  
  67. 2.0, but requires the following hardware and software for operation:

  70.      a.  an IBM PC, XT or compatible with at least 2 disk drives,  double-si-
  71. ded, 192 K of memory (required by 1-2-3), either a  monochrome or color
  72. monitor or both, and optionally, a printer.  (Compatibility with other MS-DOS
  73. computers using 1-2-3 is possible, if the file format of their 1-2-3 is 1A).

  75.      b.  Lotus Development Corporation's 1-2-3 program, release  1A only. 
  76. Desktop will not work with Lotus' 1-2-3 release 1.0,  because the file
  77. save/retrieve format has been changed in the  revision by Lotus.
