  38. PC-File III is a general purpose "Data Base Manager" program. It is
  39. designed specifically for ease of use. With PC-File III it's very
  40. easy to create and maintain databases on the computer, and to
  41. create simple printed reports based on your data.
  42.  
  43. You can use PC-File III for all kinds of tasks:
  44.  
  45. -   Maintain mailing lists and print mailing labels, 1-up or
  46.     multi-up, and address envelopes.
  47.  
  48. -   Maintain price lists,
  49.  
  50. -   Maintain telephone or name/address directories,
  51.  
  52. -   Keep various types of inventory records,
  53.  
  54. -   Build personnel databases,
  55.  
  56. -   Keep customer lists,
  57. -   Build and maintain databases to be exported for use by other
  58.     programs, like Visicalc, Multiplan, 1-2-3, and Mailmerge,
  59.  -   Import files from other systems, into the PC-File III format.
  60.  
  61. -   Maintain "secure" information in an encrypted format.  No one
  62.     can view it who doesn't know the security code.
  63.  
  64. -   and many other tasks which only you can dream up.
  65.  
  66. PC-File III will allow you to sort your data into almost any
  67. sequence. It allows rapid access to any record in the database,
  68. with a sophisticated search technique allowing comparison searches,
  69. soundex searches, or generic searches on any field in the record.
  70. For example, you can display all employees over a certain age, all
  71. customers with last names sounding like "Schwartz", or all items
  72. that are not in a certain category.  You can print out reports from
  73. your database, listing all or some of the fields, from all or some
  74. of the records, in many different sequences, with subtotals and
  75. totals on the numeric fields.  Report fields can be calculated
  76. based on information in other fields in the database.  Reports can
  77. be sent directly to your video screen or to any one of many
  78. different types of printers.  They can also be sent to disk for
  79. later use with your word processing programs.

  81. You can create entire new databases from existing databases.  The
  82. new database can be in a different format, and can be a subset of
  83. the database from which it was "cloned". New fields can be added,
  84. old fields can be deleted, field positions can be rearranged, and
  85. field sizes can be lengthened or shortened.

  87. You can merge together two databases that have similar definitions.
  88. Databases can thus be created and maintained on separate PC's, then
  89. combined when desired into a "master" database.

  91. You can export & import your databases for use with Multiplan,
  92. Visicalc and other "calc"  programs, or as "MailMerge" files.

  94. Above all else, PC-File III is EASY!  Many people can use it with
  95. no training or instructions.  Please read the documentation
  96. carefully, however, to pick up the extra "fine points" of the
  97. program.  The author has steadfastly refused to make any additions
  98. to PC-File III which would make it harder to use.  Any suggestions
  99. which you have for improving this program will be thoughtfully
  100. considered and greatly appreciated.

  102. PC-File III requires at least 160K of disk storage, and a 96K or
  103. larger IBM-PC or IBM-PC "compatible" computer with DOS 1.1, DOS
  104. 2.0, or DOS 2.1.  128K or more of memory and 320K or more disk
  105. storage is recommended.
