ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. About Screen Blanker ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Screen Blanker is an easy to use program with five powerful functions that are
not available in the standard Operating System/2: screen saving, screen
capturing, displaying system information in an information window, opening any
objects (files, folders, programs, devices) using launch keys, task and message
scheduling using the built in alarm clock function. Despite this functionality
that goes beyond simple screen saving, Screen Blanker is easy on system
resources such as memory. The Screen Blanker window is organized like a control
center with buttons and menus and the Settings notebook lets you easily
configure Screen Blanker.
Screen Blanker saves your screen from damage and saves energy if you have a
monitor that supports DPMS or APMS. Screen Blanker also features a password
lockup that covers your entire screen for security reasons. Screen Blanker
monitors your mouse and keyboard and if you do not make any inputs for a
certain time (blank time) the screen is blanked. You can change the blank time
and select modules in the Settings notebook. When the screen is blanked Screen
Blanker chooses one of the selected modules. If no module is selected the
screen will be just blanked. If you start Screen Blanker with the parameter '-'
(minus sign) the Screen Blanker window is automatically hidden. It is a good
idea to start Screen Blanker automatically when booting your system (e.g. from
the Startup folder). If you want to blank your screen immediately move the
mouse pointer to the corresponding blank corner of your screen or press the
blank key combination. Screen Blanker does not support full screen DOS and
WIN-OS/2 sessions since this would introduce stability risks unknown under the
Operating System/2. However when you work in seamless WIN-OS/2 sessions or if
you run DOS programs in a Window on your desktop Screen Blanker becomes active.
Screen Blanker supports a variety of external screen saver modules. You can use
Deskpic modules (.DSS), Screen Blanker modules (.BSS) and Screen Saver modules
(.SSM). Screen Blanker has a built-in watchdog funtion to detect errors in
external Deskpic screen saver modules. If the desktop freezes just wait 5
seconds while Screen Blanker tries to terminate the faulty module.
Screen Blanker also provides an easy screen capture utility. Screen Blanker
copies the corresponding part of the screen or the entire screen to the
clipboard and optionally saves it to a file or prints it. Just select what you
want to capture in the Capture menu and press the Print Screen key. When you
print a captured bitmap you can dither the bitmap to the palette of the
currently selected printer to create the best possible printed output (compared
to standard print screens).
The information window can be used to display important system information such
as time, date, system time, swapfile size, available swap space, available
space on non removeable disks and available memory.
To change the color or the font of the Screen Blanker status line or the
information window drag the desired color or font from the color palette or
from the font palette to the corresponding window. To change the settings of
the information window display the information window pop-up menu by clicking
the right mouse button over the information window.
Screen Blanker can also be used to open any object with a single keystroke from
any application on the Workplace Shell. This provides a very useful functional
extension to the object-oriented Workplace Shell since it dramatically speeds
up work with folders and programs you use most often.
The alarm function allows you to schedule 32 alarms a week. This enables you to
automate daily or weekly actions such as virus scanning or backing up data or
it just reminds you to give someone a call in a couple of hours.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Launch keys and objects ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Q: How can I create an object id for assigning to a key? I want to make a
program like ZOC come up when I press a key. Where does it store its id?
A: Not every object on your workplace has an object id. In most cases though
when you install a program with an installation program you will find the
object id of that program on the object id list because the installation
program explicitly creates the id. But you can do another thing that works just
as well if you do not find the id you are looking for. Instead of entering the
object id, enter for instance C: \ZOC2\ZOC.EXE and press Enter or Assign. Then
edit the settings of ZOC.EXE (open your drive C: folder and the ZOC2 folder for
that) so that it has the same parameters as your program object which means
that you just have to enter the startup directory and that's all in most cases.
Q: What do the object ids on the list mean?
A: The object ids refer to objects on your desktop. These objects can be device
objects such as printers or drives, folder objects like the OS/2 system folder
or program objects like Pulse. The object id of any object is always unique and
in most cases it is an abbreviation of the title of the object. You can copy an
object id to the File or folder object to open entry field by double-clicking
on it.
Here are some examples:
<WP_OS2SYS> The OS/2 System Setup Folder
<WP_PROMPTS> The Command prompts folder
<WP_SHRED> The Shredder
<WP_NETWORK> The Network folder
<WP_RDME> The shadow object of the READ.ME file
<WP_OS2FS> OS/2 Full Screen
<WP_OS2WIN> OS/2 Window
<WP_TUTOR> OS/2 Tutorial
<WP_DOSFS> DOS Full Screen
<WP_DOS_DRV_A> Boot Dos from Drive A: object
<ULTIMAIL_INBASKET> Ultimail's inbasket
Q: Why can't I directly enter the title of an object? Why can I just enter file
objects and object ids?
A: This is a compromise. Even opening file objects could only be done with the
help of REXX since there currently is no programming function for that.
Q: Why can I just use Ctrl+Shift for launch keys? Why not any other key
combination?
A: There are several reasons for that. First the combination Ctrl+Shift is not
often used in application programs so you won't activate any menu commands by
mistake. Second Ctrl+Shift is easy to remember and the two keys are positioned
next to each other on your keyboard. As a matter of fact you can press and hold
them both down with one finger. 38 different assignments should be enough for
practical work. Just compare it to the Launch pad. Most users won't even have
38 objects on their launch pad. The last reason is performance. One of Screen
Blankers design principles is being as easy on resources as possible. The
launch key feature like the alarm clock implemented the way they are have
virtually no impact on system performance.
Q: How can one make the program launched via a launch key become the window in
focus? For example, if I was to start an OS/2 window <WP_OS2WIN> via, say
Ctrl+Shift+O, it starts somewhere behind all of the other windows. It does not
have the focus. Is there a way around this problem?
A: Actually quite a simple one. Unless you select the Create new views option
you can press the launch key combination twice. First time around the Window is
created second time around the window gets the focus.
Q: Can I open any folder using a launch key combination or just a folder that
has an object id?
A: You can open any folder on your desktop or on your drive by entering the
full pathname in the File or folder object to open entry field.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Screen capturing ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Screen Blanker's screen capturing options let you do more types of screen
captures than you might think. This help chapter explains some techniques to
capture screens.
To capture a window, a window that receives focus, a part of the screen or the
entire screen select the corresponding item on the Capture menu. Then press the
Print Screen key.
If you want to capture a drag and drop action on your desktop you have to
select Delayed capture first. Please make sure that the delay time in the
Settings dialog is set to the required time. If you also want to capture the
mouse pointer select Capture pointer. To actually capture the screen choose
Window from the Capture menu, press the Print Screen key and click anywhere on
your desktop background. Then pick up the desired object, drag it to the
desired location and wait until the screen is captured.
You can also capture objects on your desktop with their context menus open
using the technique described above.
If you want to copy a part of the entire screen that you captured as described
above, just open the clipboard viewer. Maximize it or bring the part that you
want to capture into view and capture it by selecting Part of screen from the
Options menu and by pressing the Print Screen key.
To capture a control window from a dialog box move the focus to the required
control window using the Tab key. Then select Window that receives focus from
the Capture menu, press the Print Screen key and click on the title bar of the
dialog window to capture the desired control window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Registration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
