  1. The main reason that people don't like to use gnu chess is that it 
  2. lacks of mouse support. Windows and PM versions are slow and weak.
  3. This recompilation of GNU chess 4.0-pl65 with mouse support should 
  4. provide a good alternative. 
  5.  
  6. Installation:
  7. Very simple. Just unzip all files into a directory of your choice and
  8. keep them together. You can put emx.dll in your libpath, e.g. c:\os2\dll.

  10. Start the program:
  11. It runs under both windowed and full screen OS/2 sessions. When you start
  12. gnuchesn.exe, it looks the same as before except six extra commands printed on
  13. the right side of the screen.

  15. Make move:
  16. Need two clicks to make one move.
  17. First click left button on the starting square (computer gives you a low tone beep)
  18. and then on the destination square (computer gives you a high tone beep).
  19. Do not drag and drop.
  20. If you made mistake, computer will show a message telling you illegal move.
  21. Try again.

  23. Issue commands:
  24. If the commands you want to issue is one of the six shown on the right side of 
  25. the screen, just click on it with the left button. 
  26. If other than those, click the RIGHT button once (some time need twice depends
  27. on where you are at that moment). When you see a prompt blink after 
  28.                         Your move is? _
  29. enter command just like you work with other versions. If you don't know,
  30. enter "help". If you change mind and don't want to issue any command,
  31. just hit ENTER.

  33. Force computer to move:
  34. If you want to force computer to make move immediately, hit any key.
  35.  
  36. Easy mode off:
  37. When computer is thinking on your time, you can't make move. Hit any key
  38. to stop computer thinking and then enter move with mouse or by issuing a command.
  39. I can't fix this problem without major cosmetic surgery for the program,
  40. and currently I have no plan to. However, on the bright side, it is still a lot
  41. easier to use than before. You'll get use to it.
