  14. There has been a change in the ftp sites for decus uucp.
  15. Notably, the "root" site (mis1.mis.mcw.edu) has been changed,
  16. and is now "post.its.mcw.edu".   Adding to this is the fact that
  17. the new root system is a unix system, and not vms.    Currently,
  18. there are 4 major sites that offer decus uucp via anonymous ftp:
  19. Two of them are VMS sites, and the other two are unix-based.

  21. I've made a lot of additions to the "how to get" document, so here it is.

  31. How to get DECUS UUCP (Version 2.0):
  32.  
  33. DECUS UUCP, distributed by the DECUS "VMSNET" working group, is a complete
  34. implementation of UUCP for VMS.    It is becoming one of the most popular
  35. "packages" offered from DECUS, and for many VAX sites, it's their only
  36. way to get to the internet.        This file describes how you may
  37. obtain your very own copy of the software for little or no cost.
  38.  
  39.  
  40. 1) via DECUS.   By far the most popular method of obtaining DECUS UUCP
  41.    is through the VAX SIG TAPES distributed by the DECUS librarians.  The
  42.    tapes (now available on CDROM, too!) do not cost much (or nothing at all
  43.    if you obtain them via your LUG librarian), and you'll get
  44.    TONS of stuff besides "just" UUCP.     Contact your local DECUS tape
  45.    librarian, and find out how you can get the latest set of DECUS tapes.
  46.    (You can also order them through the DECUS LIBRARY)

  48.    NOTE:
  49.     * decus UUCP (V2.0) is NOW available on the SPRING 1992 tapes
  50.     * decus UUCP (V1.3) last appeared on the FALL 1990 tapes

  52. 2) using FTP via the INTERNET.   DECUS UUCP (V2.0) is available via anonymous
  53.    ftp from the following sites (on both unix and VMS sites):

  91.    NEW sites (not yet running UUCP) will also need MAPS.BKP.
  92.    The "NEWS" files refer to Geoff Huston's ANU-NEWS, which is
  93.    also distributed with DECUS UUCP.

  107.    Files marked with a "*" are the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM required.  (note:
  108.    the files here are a bit different from the VMS FTP or MAGTAPE
  109.    distribution because they're compressed)

  111.    Hint:  If you're using MULTINET, then do the FTP from mvb.saic.com,
  112.    since MULTINET-MULTINET transfers can handle VMS backup savesets
  113.    perfectly (with the "TYPE BACKUP" command).
  114.  
  115.    Additionally, If you're really up to it, the ftp site
  116.    wuarchive.wustl.edu currently offers the latest VAX SIG decus
  117.    tape offerings via anonymous ftp.  (the WHOLE tape, no parts!).  Be
  118.    ready for a lot of transfer time and a lot of pieces, though.

  120.    If you do use FTP on any of the above sites, PLEASE be kind.
  121.    DECUS UUCP is kind of big, so transfer it during non-peak hours.

  124. 3) Via "anonymous uucp".

  127.    UUNET also has the package available for pickup via anonymous uucp.
  128.    (any DECUS UUCP site running at least V1.2 can make use of this!)

  130.    DOCUMENTATION ON USING ANONYMOUS UUCP IS *IN* YOUR EXISTING (V1.2+)
  131.    DECUS UUCP DOCUMENTATION (USRGDxx.MEM).

  133.    You can use uunet even if you are not a "subscriber" (they have
  134.    a 900 number!   At the time of writing, connect charges via 900
  135.    access costs about $0.40 a minute)    (be forwarned:  uunet
  136.    charges rates based on connect time used.... based on a V.32 modem
  137.    (etc), the BASE kit would cost about $10-$12.  The ENTIRE kit can
  138.    probably be retrieved for under $50.)   Although long distance is
  139.    the "next best thing to being there", it isn't cheap....

  141.    (If all you have is a 2400-baud modem, don't even consider this.....)
  142.  
  143.    The directory to get the files from is ~/systems/vms/uucp   and
  144.    the very first file to retrieve is "aaareadme.txt".   That file
  145.    will then document for you everything else you have to do.  (what
  146.    files to get, how to uncompress them, etc.).

  148.    See the unix-based file list above for reference to all the file names
  149.    and file sizes for UUNET.  You can be the judge as to what it would
  150.    cost to transfer knowing your system's capabilities, modem speed,
  151.    and connection rate.

  154. 4) Lastly, the final method of getting a copy is via your local friendly
  155.    mailman.    I provide free distribution of the DECUS UUCP package,
  156.    but only if you pay the freight.

  158.    Package the following:

  160.    1 tape    (TK50, TK70, TK86  or 9-track)
  161.    1 self-addressed, STAMPED envelope to fit the tape  **required**
  162.

  174.     If you use 6250, it will all fit on a 600-foot reel.  If you need 1600,
  175.     then you must send a 2400-foot reel)

  177.     U.S. Postage for mailing a TKxx cartridge is something like $2.90.
  178.     (thus, for both ways, the total cost is $5.80)

  180.     A few notes.   I provide this service free of charge, but at the
  181.     same time, The Medical College of Wisconsin didn't hire me to make
  182.     tape copies either.  As I get tapes to make, I make them when I can.
  183.     Usual turnaround time is about a week.  ("your mileage may vary").

  185.     Finally, when it comes to the self-addressed "stamped"
  186.     envelope, you can use normal US postal mail, Federal Express, or UPS.
  187.     Our office does not normally deal with any other couriers, so please
  188.     don't go using DHL or something.  If you do use a courier, make sure
  189.     to fill out a return delivery form with the charges billed to your
  190.     company's account number.

  241.   Actually, the FTP server is CRUX (a homebrew thing based on CMU).
