  9.   Q1:  Can I walk into a local software retailer today and
  10.        purchase OS/2 2.0?
  11.  
  12.   A1:  Our goal is to make OS/2 2.0 available everywhere DOS is
  13.        available and will be widely available on dealer shelves
  14.        toward the end of April.  If a customer's remarketer does
  15.        not yet have the product in stock, it will be available
  16.        through an 800# where IBM is taking direct orders.
  17.  
  18.   Q2:  When will Windows 3.1 code be included in OS/2 2.0?  Will
  19.        you issue another release?
  20.  
  21.   A2:  As you know, we have the intellectual property rights
  22.        to Windows 3.1 code and are currently running that code
  23.        in our lab.  We will review the final functionality of
  24.        Windows 3.1 and base any feature updates on what our
  25.        customers require.
  26.  
  27.   Q3:  IBM has always said it will not sacrifice product
  28.        quality to meet a delivery date.  Is today's product of
  29.        the highest possible quality or is it a buggy product
  30.        that has been released to meet your set delivery date?
  31.  
  32.   A3:  OS/2 is at a superior quality level.  We believe we are
  33.        delivering a world class product to our customers, one
  34.        which for the first time exploits the power of 32-bit
  35.        Intel-based systems.
  36.  
  37.   Q4:  Now that the 32-bit graphics engine will not be
  38.        included in the GA version of OS/2 2.0, is the product
  39.        a true 32-bit operating system?
  40.  
  41.   A4:  We are shipping a full-function 32-bit operating system
  42.        with a hybrid graphics engine.  It will support both
  43.        32-bit and 16-bit graphics applications.  As work
  44.        continues, we will enhance 32-bit graphics support as
  45.        part of our OS/2 product updates.

  47.   Q5:  When will the full 32-bit GRE be available?
  48.  
  49.   A5:  We are delivering all the function at GA.  Any
  50.        additional 32-bit graphics technology would be provided
  51.        as part of our regular product updates.
  52.  
  53.   Q6:  How many copies of OS/2 2.0 do you expect to sell by
  54.        year end '92?
  55.  
  56.   A6:  Currently, we have more than 1 million OS/2 licenses
  57.        and each of those users will receive a free upgrade to OS/2
  58.        2.0.  We expect to sell numbers in the millions.

  60.   Q7:  How many free copies of OS/2 2.0 have you been giving
  61.        away today?
  62.  
  63.   A7:  Just enough for appropriate merchandising.  As with any new
  64.        software introduction, a portion of not-for-sale (NSF)
  65.        copies are allocated for use by you, the press, as well as
  66.        by consultants, analysts and user groups and by our dealers,
  67.        to name a few.

  69.   Q8:  Will these not-for-sale (freebies) be included in your
  70.        OS/2-installed base figures?
  71.  
  72.   A8:  We will report unit shipments, just like the rest of the
  73.        industry.

  75.   Q9:  How is IBM planning to measure the success of OS/2 2.0 in
  76.        the short-term?  Long term?
  77.  
  78.   A9:  We use profitability, marketing share and customer
  79.        satisfaction.

  81.   Q10: How soon will you have another version or release of
  82.        OS/2?
  83.  
  84.   A10: We do not anticipate that a new version of OS/2 will be
  85.        required for some time.  Rather, we will continue to enhance
  86.        OS/2 2.0 over time by providing regular product
  87.        enhancements.

  89.   Pricing

  91.   Q11: Will you offer an introductory price for OS/2 2.0?
  92.  
  93.   A11: Yes.  Through July 31, Windows users can buy OS/2 2.0
  94.        for $49.00; any DOS user can upgrade for $99.00 and new
  95.        purchasers can buy OS/2 2.0 for $139.00.

  97.   Q12: What about OS/2 1.X users?
  98.  
  99.   A12: All existing OS/2 users can upgrade to 2.0 for free until
  100.        July 31.

  102.   Q13: What is the process for DOS, Windows and OS/2 upgrades
  103.        during promotional period?  What proof do I need to provide?
  104.  
  105.   A13: Actual proof of purchase or the original first page of the
  106.        operating manual. (More detail to come.)

  108.   Marketing
  109.  
  110.   Q14: IBM must have invested heavily in the development of
  111.        OS/2 2.0.  How much did you spend?
  112.  
  113.   A14: Development costs are proprietary.  (Note:  If responding to
  114.        WSJ article, $2.5 billion was grossly exaggerated.)

  116.   Q15: Does IBM expect OS/2 2.0 to be a big revenue producer?
  117.  
  118.   A15: We believe OS/2 2.0 will be a success in the
  119.        marketplace.
  120.  
  121.   Q16: Are you looking at different ways of marketing OS/2 2.0
  122.        in the channels?  For instance, will you be selling it
  123.        direct?
  124.  
  125.   A16: Our goal is to make OS/2 available everywhere DOS is
  126.        available.  We will be selling OS/2 2.0 in ways that
  127.        reach our target audiences.  Our preferred delivery channel
  128.        is through our business partners (retailers and dealers).
  129.        However, we will also be selling OS/2 2.0 through catalogs,
  130.        800# ordering and IBM direct marketing force.

  132.   Q17: How much are you spending altogether in advertising/
  133.        promotion?
  134.  
  135.   A17: Our promotional budget is proprietary.  However, let me
  136.        emphasize that we have established a far-reaching
  137.        campaign.  In fact, it will be one of our largest worldwide
  138.        ad investments for an IBM product this year.

  140.   Q18: Will you be doing any TV advertisements?
  141.  
  142.   A18: We have a hard-hitting print effort planned, however, we
  143.        are certainly exploring additional media.
  144.  
  145.   Q19: Who is your advertising target audience?
  146.  
  147.   A19: We are targeting our traditional customers as well as
  148.        PC end users.  We have an aggressive effort aimed at a
  149.        comprehensive audience.

  151.   ISVs/OEMs
  152.  
  153.   Q20: How many ISV applications are currently ready to run on
  154.        OS/2 2.0?
  155.  
  156.   A20: We have more than 1,000 ISVs who have committed to
  157.        deliver 32-bit applications by the end of the year.
  158.        A substantial number of these applications are slated for
  159.        2Q and 3Q.
  160.  
  161.   Q21: Have you funded any of the ISVs development efforts?
  162.  
  163.   A21: We have a handful of joint development agreements -- all
  164.        sound business decisions -- which we feel will result in a
  165.        satisfactory return to IBM.  We are not "bankrolling"
  166.        anyone.

  168.   Q22: How does your OEM arrangement work?
  169.  
  170.   A22: As part of IBM's intention to support OEM 386 or 486 PC
  171.        platforms, the company will work with all users who may
  172.        experience compatibility issues in their first three months
  173.        of use and, if a resolution is not possible, the user will
  174.        be reimbursed for the cost of OS/2 2.0.
  175.  
  176.        IBM also intends to offer IBM OS/2 2.0, Extended Services
  177.        for OS/2, LAN Server 2.0 and Toolkits to OEMs that want to
  178.        deliver the new software with their personal computers.
  179.  
  180.   Q23: Do you think you'll be successful in getting OEMs to
  181.        pre-load OS/2 2.0 on their systems?
  182.  
  183.   A23: Yes.  IBM's intent is to support all 386 and above machines
  184.        that are PC compatible.  As such, we are testing hundreds of
  185.        OEM machines to insure that OS/2 2.0 will work.  IBM
  186.        maintains a list of supported OEM machine models which will
  187.        be periodically updated as more machines are tested for OS/2
  188.        compatibility.

  190.        At present, OS/2 has been tested successfully on most of the
  191.        major PC brands, including:  Compaq, Tandy, Dell, AST,
  192.        Zenith, Packard Bell, Epson, Toshiba and over 30 others.

  194.   Q24: Of your beta customers how many have committed to purchasing
  195.        2.0?
  196.  
  197.   A24: Response from beta users has been overwhelmingly positive.
  198.        Many are OS/2 1.3 customers already and therefore will
  199.        receive a free upgrade to 2.0.  Our Limited Availability
  200.        (LA) customers have made significant purchase commitments to
  201.        OS/2 2.0.

  203.   Networking
  204.  
  205.   Q25: When will LAN Server 2.0 be generally available?
  206.  
  207.   A25: OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 will be available on April 10.
  208.  
  209.   Q26: What is IBM's LAN strategy for OS/2 -- in terms of LAN
  210.        Server, database and communications server
  211.        capabilities?
  212.  
  213.   A26: OS/2 is an industrial strength platform designed to provide
  214.        PC users with the broadest choices in the industry today for
  215.        networking in small, intermediate and large businesses.
  216.        IBM's networking strategy for OS/2 begins with the base
  217.        operating system itself -- with its LAN-aware shell and
  218.        multitasking capabilities so suitable for taking advantage
  219.        of rich network resources.
  220.  
  221.        LAN Server 2.0 combines industry-leading function for OS/2,
  222.        DOS and Windows clients in terms of administering LAN
  223.        resources, such as applications, files and print.
  224.  
  225.        Extended Services offers a powerful LAN client/server
  226.        database option (DDCS) that allows DOS, OS/2 and Windows
  227.        clients to tap into much larger network databases through a
  228.        single server on a LAN.
  229.  
  230.   Q27: LAN Server has been viewed as a poor performer.  What
  231.        are the number of LAN Servers running on OS/2 2.0?
  232.  
  233.   A27: We have run additional testing to show that the performance
  234.        of LAN Server 2.0 is 2.5 times faster than LAN Server 1.3,
  235.        depending on workload characteristics.  It is extremely
  236.        competitive in OS/2 environments.
  237.  
  238.   Q28: How does IBM expect to exert leadership with OS/2 as a
  239.        networking platform without TCP/IP support?
  240.  
  241.   A28: OS/2 2.0 has very strong TCP/IP internetworking capabilities
  242.        through TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 2.0 clients.  (TCP/IP
  243.        Version 2.0 supports DOS and Windows users.)  TCP/IP Version
  244.        1.2 provides OS/2 PCs with both client and server access to
  245.        AIX and UNIX workstations, as well as to X.25 packet
  246.        switching wide area networks and to X-windows engineering
  247.        graphics.
  248.  
  249.   Q29: How many clients can be maintained at one time with LAN
  250.        Server 2.0?
  251.  
  252.   A29: There is no limit to clients on a single server, however, a
  253.        reasonable maximum would be the Token-Ring standard of 260
  254.        clients per server on a ring.
  255.  
  256.   Q30: How does OS/2 work with NetView?
  257.  
  258.   A30: OS/2 sends alerts to NetView through its communications
  259.        manager capability, now a part of Extended Services.  These
  260.        alerts will be enhanced over time but focus today on
  261.        problems arising in network communication and in resource
  262.        sharing.  LAN Management Utilities/2 provides NetView with
  263.        information on LAN utilization and configuration and helps
  264.        NetView perform functions such as server recovery.
  265.  
  266.   Q31: I've heard from early customers that installing
  267.        Extended Services is a mammoth undertaking.  Is this
  268.        true?  Will you fix it?
  269.  
  270.   A31: While IBM views Extended Services installability as
  271.        acceptable today, never the less it will continue to hone
  272.        the install procedure making it easier for end users for the
  273.        future.
  274.  
  275.   Q32: How does your recent networking announcement on APPN affect
  276.        OS/2 2.0?
  277.  
  278.   A32: OS/2 2.0 provides high performance in APPN support through
  279.        Extended Services.  Advanced-Peer-to-Peer Networking, or
  280.        APPN, is an industry-leading networking infrastructure for
  281.        client/server distributed application -- providing great
  282.        flexibility for network reconfigurations as well as
  283.        robustness for the high bandwidth transmissions.

  285.   Taligent/PINK
  286.  
  287.   Q33: With the formation of Taligent, is IBM still committed
  288.        to OS/2 2.0?
  289.  
  290.   A33: Yes.  We plan to protect our customers' investment in
  291.        OS/2 by providing OS/2 application support in the new
  292.        object oriented environment should our customers
  293.        desire to move to that environment.
  294.  
  295.   Q34: Should I just wait for Taligent and continue writing
  296.        Windows applications?
  297.  
  298.   A34: Absolutely not.  You're missing a great opportunity if you
  299.        don't exploit the capabilities of OS/2 2.0 now.  The
  300.        application benefits you can achieve today with OS/2 2.0 far
  301.        surpass what can be gained by other existing 32-bit
  302.        Intel-based operating systems.
  303.  
  304.   Q35: What stages will take place in a transition from OS/2
  305.        to Taligent?  What guidance would you give developers
  306.        today?
  307.  
  308.   A35: OS/2 will continue to be enhanced in the '90s.
  309.        Extensions to support multimedia, pen and tablet based
  310.        applications distributed computing (e.g., DCE) will be
  311.        added.  Portability to non-Intel platforms is also planned
  312.        as is the ability to run OS/2 applications within the
  313.        Taligent environment.

  315.   Microsoft/Windows 3.1
  316.  
  317.   Q36: Bill Gates was quoted recently as saying that
  318.        concerning OS/2 2.0, IBM "may have promised more than
  319.        it can deliver."  Is he correct and can you deliver a
  320.        better Windows than Windows?
  321.  
  322.   A36: We are fully confident that we will be delivering
  323.        everything that was promised for OS/2 2.0.  First of
  324.        all, this system contains much more functionality than
  325.        was outlined in April 1991.  In fact the performance we
  326.        detailed at that time was met in our LA code last
  327.        December.  Secondly, IBM is delivering what its customers
  328.        and ISVs have asked for -- a more crash-protected
  329.        environment under 2.0.
  330.  
  331.   Q37: Do you view Microsoft as a direct competitor in the OS
  332.        arena?
  333.  
  334.   A37: Absolutely.  We are direct competitors in operating systems
  335.        for the desktop.  On the applications side, our strategy is
  336.        inclusive.  We want to embrace users of DOS and Windows
  337.        programs and have them  run these applications in a more
  338.        stable environment -- OS/2.
  339.  
  340.   Q38: Will you incorporate NT technology into OS/2?
  341.  
  342.   A38: NT is not a currently available product.  We have the rights
  343.        to NT technology.  However, most of the function that NT
  344.        will have is in OS/2 2.0.  We bring that function to OS/2
  345.        2.0 users today whereas NT is due sometime in 1993.

  347.   Enterprise
  348.  
  349.   Q39: What is the role of OS/2 2.0 in an enterprise
  350.        environment?
  351.  
  352.   A39: OS/2 2.0 provides an industrial strength operating
  353.        system platform that provides the user with single
  354.        workstation access to personal productivity
  355.        applications, LAN based workgroup applications, and
  356.        host-based enterprise applications. In essence, OS/2
  357.        2.0 provides the user with an entree into the total
  358.        enterprise.  OS/2 2.0 also provides a high performance
  359.        platform for LAN server applications.
  360.  
  361.   Q40: How does OS/2 2.0 support SAA applications?
  362.  
  363.   A40: OS/2 2.0 is the most advanced open workstation
  364.        environment.  The OS/2 2.0 workplace shell conforms to
  365.        the '91 object-oriented user interface. OS/2
  366.        2.0 also enables customer or vendor developed CUA '91
  367.        applications.  With the addition of OS/2 Extended
  368.        Services, OS/2 2.0 provides an SAA conforming
  369.        relational database manager and extensive SAA CCS local
  370.        area network and wide area communications connectivity.
  371.        SAA CPI programming languages and services are
  372.        supported on OS/2 2.0 with selected compilers offering
  373.        32-bit support.  OS/2 2.0 also provides the workstation
  374.        base for SAA cooperative applications.
  375.  
  376.   Q41: How does OS/2 2.0 participate in an open systems
  377.        environment?
  378.  
  379.   A41: OS/2 2.0 with OS/2 Extended Services and/or OS/2 LAN
  380.        Server offers a wide variety of industry and
  381.        international standards for both client/server and wide
  382.        area network environments.  This allows customers to
  383.        incorporate OS/2 based workstations and servers in a
  384.        broad range of multi-vendor system environments.

  386.   Q42: OS/2 Extended Edition had been designated as the SAA
  387.        workstation environment?  What is the impact of the
  388.        repackaging of OS/2?
  389.  
  390.   A42: OS/2 2.0 with OS/2 Extended Services 1.0 (ES) is the
  391.        successor to OS/2 EE except it doesn't include OS/2 LAN
  392.        Requester.  The combination of both programs provides the
  393.        full complement of SAA function.  Distributed Data
  394.        Connection Services/2 (DDCS/2) is required on a workstation
  395.        client or LAN server to access remote SAA host-based
  396.        relational database managers.
  397.  
  398.   Q43: The OS/2 Workplace Shell differs in some respects with
  399.        the CUA guidelines?  Do you plan to correct these
  400.        differences?
  401.  
  402.   A43: While there are some minor differences, the OS/2 2.0
  403.        Workplace Shell is CUA compliant.  CUA is a set of
  404.        guidelines for both environments and applications alike.
  405.        The Workplace Shell, an implementation of the CUA
  406.        architecture, provides a platform which allows users to run
  407.        existing applications, while providing significant potential
  408.        for future object oriented applications.
  409.  
  410.        The OS/2 Workplace Shell and CUA will both evolve over time.
  411.        Customer experience will be a key factor.  IBM will continue
  412.        to ensure the highest degree of consistency possible, while
  413.        providing the most usable solution for our customers.|
