  5. Thank you for trying File Manager StepUp!
  6.  
  7. The idea of this program was sitting in my head almost from the
  8. very first day I started to use the File Manager for regular, dull
  9. tasks of copying and moving files, running programs, etc. I used
  10. to work with the Norton Commander, and when Windows 3.0 first
  11. appeared on my computer, I was frustrated of the lack of features
  12. of the FM in comparison with the NC. I hate typing, but when I
  13. needed to run a program with some command line options, FM forced
  14. me to type all of them each time. When I wanted to take a look at
  15. some file, FM frequently stopped me with the message 'No
  16. application is associated with the file'. When I needed to figure
  17. out the total space consumed by some developed tree of
  18. directories, I had to add together the sizes of each subdirectory
  19. with a pocket calculator while my PC was waiting for the me...
  20.  
  21. Well, FM for Windows 3.1 was a big step ahead, FM for Windows for
  22. Workgroups even has a toolbar (finally!), but still not as good to
  23. push the old good NC out from my desktop.
  24.  
  25. And I asked myself on one rainy day: "Do I really have to wait for
  26. Chicago hoping to get something that would deserve the right to be
  27. called File Manager or can I make my life easier today?" I spent
  28. some time writing a simple DLL (a grandparent of the FM StepUp)
  29. that trapped the Run dialog box and added an additional element,
  30. the 'History' list to it. That turned out to be pretty convenient
  31. and I occasionally returned to that project, adding more and more
  32. features to it. Some time ago I thought that it is not honest to
  33. enjoy the life while others cannot, so I put all the stuff
  34. together and decided to propose the result - the File Manager
  35. StepUp - for your use.
  36.  
  37. This program helps me and I hope you will find it helpful for you.

  135. ABOUT File Manager StepUp
  136.  
  137. FM StepUp is the powerful and innovative File Manager extender
  138. for Microsoft(R) Windows(tm) 3.1 or later.

  140. FM StepUp makes the File Manager an actually user friendly
  141. application. Here is the list of the features the File Manager
  142. gets with the FM StepUp:

  144. 1. The following standard File Manager's dialog boxes: Run, Create
  145. Directory, Search, Select Files, Label Disk, Format Disk, By File
  146. Type, are getting the 'History' fields remembering the strings you
  147. typed into the dialog boxes before. You are able now to recall any
  148. of them and edit it, if necessary, without typing them from
  149. scratch.

  151. 2. The following dialog boxes: Move, Copy, Copy Disk, Make System
  152. Disk, are getting the 'Verify' check boxes which enable you to
  153. easily set the verify mode on or off (with the same effect as
  154. entering command VERIFY ON/OFF at the DOS command prompt) before
  155. performing the operations.

  157. 3. The following dialog boxes: Run, Move, Copy, are getting an
  158. additional button, 'Browse', in case you forgot the name of the
  159. file to execute or the directory to copy/move the files. And the
  160. Print dialog is now provided with 'Copy to PRN' check box, making

  163. 4. All the dialog boxes of the File Manager are now displayed
  164. using 3D effects (like that of Excel and some other applications).

  166. 5. The main menu of the File Manager is getting a new item,
  167. StepUp, containing a number of additional commands:

  169.    New File     - to instantaneously create a new file;

  171.    View, Edit   - to view or edit the contents of a file with
  172.                 arbitrary extension;

  174.    Special      - to perform some useful operations, such as
  175.                 calculation of the size of all the selected files
  176.                 and directories, including all the subdirectories;
  177.                 changing the date and/or time of the selected
  178.                 files; quick reloading the extensions, returning
  179.                 to DOS, restarting Windows, or rebooting the
  180.                 system;

  182.    Preferences  - to customize the FM StepUp: change the default

  184.                 'history' lists; enable/disable Quick Menu; set up

  228. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a
  229. stand-alone program: there is no special executable file you would
  230. run to start the FM StepUp. To use the FM StepUp software, all
  231. you need is properly install it, and it will run automatically
  232. every time you run the File Manager.
  233.  
  234. Please follow these simple rules to install the FM StepUp:
  235.  
  236. 1)      If not already running Microsoft Windows, start Windows
  237.         3.1 or later.
  238.  
  239. 2)      If the FM StepUp package came to you zipped, unzip it into
  240.         some temporary directory on either your hard or floppy
  241.         disk. If you got the package on the original installation
  242.         diskette, insert it into a floppy drive (A or B).
  243.  
  244. 3)      If you are using one of the previous versions of the FM
  245.         StepUp, and the File Manager is running, close it.
  246.  
  247. 4)      Select the File | Run menu option of the Program Manager,
  248.         type into the dialog box:
  249.  
  250.                 install
  251.  
  252.         and press Enter (or click OK button). If problems occur,
  253.         include the full path to the directory where you have the
  254.         FM StepUp files placed.
  255.  
  256. 5)      The installation program will prompt you for any
  257.         additional information needed.
  258.  
  259. 6)      The installation program will copy all the necessary files
  260.         to a specified directory on your hard disk and create the
  261.         program group 'FMStepUp'.
  262.  
  263. 7)      If the File Manager is running, close it, and then run it
  264.         again.
  265.  
  266. If the automatic installation fails by any reason, you can install
  267. the FM StepUp manually:
  268.  
  269. 1)      Create a directory on your hard disk for FM StepUp, say
  270.         C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
  271.         installation disk into that directory.
  272.  
  273.         IMPORTANT NOTES:
  274.  
  275.         a) The directory should be NEW one, CREATED specially for
  276.         FM StepUp. DON'T place the files into any existing
  277.         directory, it may cause FM StepUp pop up the registration
  278.         reminder before the end of the evaluation period.
  279.  
  280.         b) If you are using one of the previous versions of the FM
  281.         StepUp, UNINSTALL it completely before installing new one.
  282.         (Please refer to the section 4 of this file on information
  283.         how to uninstall FM StepUp). Generally, you can copy new
  284.         files over the old ones, but be sure that the File Manager
  285.         is not running during the copying! (for example, close the
  286.         File Manager and use the 'copy' command in the MS-DOS
  287.         prompt window). Otherwise, if you overwite the file
  288.         'fmstepup.dll' while it's used by File Manager, you can
  289.         get a GPF or even system crash.
  290.         
  291. 2)      Copy the file CTL3D.DLL into the Windows SYSTEM directory
  292.         on your hard drive (be sure not to everwrite the newer
  293.         version of this file if you have already got one!). If you
  294.         are using a networked Windows installation and the SYSTEM
  295.         directory is write-protected, put the file CTL3D.DLL into
  296.         the WINDOWS directory.
  297.  
  298. 3)      Open file 'winfile.ini' for editing (using Notepad or any
  299.         other text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS
  300.         directory on your hard disk (or directory you specified
  301.         when installing Windows). Please note: the file you need
  302.         is 'winfile.ini', not 'win.ini'.
  303.  
  304.         Find the section [AddOns] in this file and place the
  305.         following string right after the string [AddOns]:
  306.  
  307.                 FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  308.  
  309.         (or specify the directory you copied the FM StepUp's
  310.         files in, if other than FMSTEPUP).
  311.  
  312.         The resulting portion of the winfile.ini should look like
  313.         this:

  320.         (... means other lines of the file). Save the file.

  322. 4)      If the File Manager is running, close it, and then run it
  323.         again.
  324.  
  325. You shell find the new menu item, 'StepUp', among the other items
  326. of the File Manager's main menu, if the installation has been
  327. completed successfully. If you cannot see the 'StepUp' item in the
  328. main menu of the File Manager, an error has occurred. Please refer
  329. to the following section for possible solutions to you problem.

  337. Q:      I cannot install FM StepUp: the General Protection Fault
  338.         occurs during the automatic installation, system crashes,
  339.         computer hangs,...
  340.  
  341. A:      Make sure you have all the steps of the installation
  342.         process completed in the order described in the section 2
  343.         of this file. Be sure not to overwrite the old version of
  344.         the file 'fmstepup.dll', if you have one, when the File
  345.         Manager is running! After all, restart your system and
  346.         repeat the installation again or try to do it manually
  347.         (see previous section for details).
  348.  
  349. Q:      I've installed the FM StepUp, but it does not seem to
  350.         work. What to do?
  351.  
  352. A:  1)  Verify that FMSTEPUP.DLL and FMSTEPUP.HLP files have been
  353.         copied into the directory you specified when installing
  354.         FM StepUp. If not, find the reason (maybe the disk is
  355.         write-protected?)
  356.  
  357.     2)  Make sure that:
  358.         a) the section [AddOns] in the file 'winfile.ini' contains
  359.            the string 'FM StepUp=...',
  360.  
  361.         b) the first character of the string is not ';', and
  362.  
  363.         c) the string after the '=' sign points to the actual
  364.            location of the FMSTEPUP.DLL file.
  365.  
  366.     3)  If you have some other File Manager extenders installed,
  367.         make sure you have no more than 4 of them active,
  368.         including FM StepUp. Try to rearrange the order in which
  369.         they are listed in the [AddOns] section of the
  370.         'winfile.ini' file.
  371.  
  372.     4)  Make sure you restarted the File Manager after the
  373.         installation process has been completed. The FM StepUp
  374.         starts to work only since new session of the File Manager!
  375.  
  376.     5)  Check out the file 'fmstepup.ini' in your WINDOWS
  377.         directory and make sure it's not corrupted by some reason.
  378.         It's safe to delete it, the FM StepUp will restore its
  379.         default configuration during the next File Manager session
  380.         and create a new file 'fmstepup.ini'. For the best result,
  381.         close the File Manager, open the MS-DOS command prompt
  382.         window, and delete the file with the command like this:
  383.  
  384.                 del c:\windows\fmstepup.ini
  385.  
  386.         Then return to Windows (enter 'exit' at the command
  387.         prompt) and run the File Manager.
  388.  
  389.     6)  If everything is done, but FM StepUp is still not working
  390.         (there is no 'StepUp' item in the File Manager's main
  391.         menu), please,  find the time to drop us a line with the
  392.         description of the problem, including the information on
  393.         the DOS and Windows versions running on your computer. We
  394.         will try to find the reason.
  395.

  398. Q:      I have some other File Manager extenders installed on my
  399.         system. Can I use the FM StepUp together with them?
  400.  
  401. A:      Sure. There should be no conflicts between the FM StepUp
  402.         and other extenders. If there are some, try to rearrange
  403.         the strings in the [AddOns] section of the 'winfile.ini'
  404.         file. And remember, there should be no more than 4
  405.         extenders active at the same time. If you have them more
  406.         than 4, comment out some of them (i.e. place semicolomns
  407.         ';' in front of the corresponding lines of the section
  408.         [AddOns]). Which ones you choose to keep active is up to
  409.         you!
  410.

  413. Q:      I'm selecting 'Help' from the StepUp menu, but Windows
  414.         cannot find the help file.
  415.  
  416. A:      Make sure that the file FMSTEPUP.HLP is in the same
  417.         directory as FMSTEPUP.DLL.
  418.

  421. Q:      I want FM StepUp to produce the 3D effects when displaying
  422.         the dialogs, what should I do? And what should I do if I
  423.         don't like the 3D effects?
  424.  
  425. A:      Choose StepUp | Preferences from the File Manager's main
  426.         menu and select '3D effects' check box (or unselect it to
  427.         disable 3D efeects). Make sure the file CTL3D.DLL is in
  428.         the Windows SYSTEM directory (or, if running on a
  429.         networked Windows installation, in the WINDOWS directory).
  430.         If not, find out why. Be sure not to overwrite the newer
  431.         version of this file, if you have one.

  435. Q:      I don't like the Quick Menu popping up every time I press
  436.         the right button. How to disable this feature?
  437.  
  438. A:      Choose StepUp | Preferences from the File Manager's main
  439.         menu and unselect 'Quick Menu' check box.

  443. Q:      I do not like the title 'StepUp' assigned to the FM
  444.         StepUp's submenu in the main menu of the File Manager. Can
  445.         I change it to something else?
  446.  
  447. A:      Yes. Open file 'fmstepup.ini' (in the WINDOWS directory) for
  448.         editing, search for the section [Preferences], and find
  449.         the string 'MenuName=&StepUp'. Replace '&StepUp' with some
  450.         other name you like more. Place the '&' sign right before
  451.         the letter you want to be underlined in the menu bar and
  452.         used as a 'menu activation key'.
  453.  
  454.         For instance, if you want to use the word 'SuperDuper' to
  455.         represent the FM StepUp's submenu in the File Manager's
  456.         main menu, and you want to use the key 'u' as a shortcut,
  457.         make the corresponding string look like:
  458.  
  459.                 MenuName=S&uperDuper
  460.  
  461.         Now restart the File Manager and enjoy!

  465. Q:      I came up with an idea of a feature that would make the
  466.         FM StepUp even better than it is now. How can I let you
  467.         know?
  468.  
  469. A:      If you are a registered user, you can make use of the
  470.         postage prepaid (continuous USA only) form, provided with
  471.         each registration package, to inform us about your needs
  472.         and ideas. Otherwise, write us at the address shown at the
  473.         end of this file. Your opinions are important for us!

  478. Q:      I would like to continue the use of FM StepUp, but the
  479.         registration reminder pops up almost every time I choose a
  480.         command and this makes it virtually impossible to work.
  481.         Why?
  482.  
  483. A:      One of the possible reasons is that the evaluation period
  484.         is over. To continue the use of FM StepUp you have to
  485.         register it. Please see the part 1 of this file for more
  486.         information.
  487.  
  488.         Another reason is also possible. If you see the reminder
  489.         before the end of the registration period, or even right
  490.         after the first installation, this may mean you didn't
  491.         follow the installation procedure exactly as it described
  492.         in section 2 of this file. Try to delete all the files
  493.         associated with FM StepUp (including its directory itself,
  494.         see section 4 in this file on how to uninstall FM StepUp
  495.         permanently) an install it again, performing the steps
  496.         exactly as they described in section 2!

  500. Q:      I like what the FM StepUp does for me and I would
  501.         register it, however, I am affraid that I won't need it
  502.         when I get Windows 4.0 (Chicago).
  503.  
  504. A:      "... Chicago will enable them [users] to continue running
  505.         their current Program Manager and File Manager
  506.         configurations..." (Source: Chicago Q & A, Microsoft,
  507.         December 1993).

  516. You can uninstall the FM StepUp temporarily or permanently. Use
  517. the first method if you plan to return to using FM StepUp in the
  518. future. The second method is to completely uninstall FM StepUp
  519. from your computer.
  520.  
  521. To uninstall FM StepUp temporarily:
  522. ----------------------------------
  523.  
  524. 1)      Open file 'winfile.ini' for editing, find the string
  525.         starting with the words 'FM StepUp=' in the section
  526.         [AddOns], and comment it out, i.e. place the ';' sign
  527.         (without quotes) as the very first symbol of the line.
  528.         Save the file.
  529.  
  530. 2)      Restart the File Manager.
  531.  
  532. If you need to bring the FM StepUp back to life, remove the ';'
  533. sign placed in the step 1 of the above procedure and restart the
  534. File Manager.
  535.  
  536. To uninstall FM StepUp permanently:
  537. ------------------------------------
  538.  
  539. 1)      Remove the whole string containing words 'FM StepUp='
  540.         from the 'winfile.ini' file;
  541.  
  542. 2)      Restart the File Manager.
  543.  
  544. 3)      Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk
  545.         you installed FM StepUp in (C:\FMSTEPUP by default) as
  546.         well as the directory itself.
  547.  
  548. 4)      Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI (not WINFILE.INI!) from your
  549.         WINDOWS directory.
  550.  
  551. 5)      Open file 'win.ini' (in your WINDOWS directory) and find the
  552.         section [FMStepUp]. Delete it along with all the lines in
  553.         this section, if any.
  554.  
  555. 6)      Delete program group 'FM StepUp' from Program Manager.
