  8. writer and scholar born approximately
  9. 620 B.C. The fables contained in this
  10. document were originally translated by
  11. the Rev. George Fyler Townsend
  12. (1814-1900). Throughout history,
  13. "Aesop's Fables" have been regarded as
  14. the finest of that genre and were much
  15. studied in scholarly circles. I
  16. encourage the reader to approach these
  17. fables with an open mind; not only will
  18. they be quite enjoyable, they will also
  19. be quite enlightening as to how the
  20. wisdom contained applies as much today
  21. as it did over 2500 years ago.
