  63. This is a release of the Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer

  69. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS 3.1

  73. To install Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer driver version 
  74. 31.V1.20 for Windows 3.1:
  75.  
  76. 1.  Choose the Control Panel from the Main Group in Program
  77.     Manager.
  78. 2.  Choose the Printers icon from the Control Panel window.
  79.     The Printers dialog box appears.
  80. 3.  Choose the Add button.
  81. 4.  From the List of Printers dialog box, select Install
  82.     Unlisted or Updated printer (first printer in list).
  83. 5.  Choose install.
  84. 6.  Insert the driver disk labeled HPPCL5E version V1.20 
  85.     into your flexible disk drive and specify the
  86.     corresponding drive.  
  87. 7.  Highlight the "HP LaserJet 4/4M", "HP LaserJet 4L", 
  88.     "HP LaserJet 4ML" or "HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX" line in
  89.     the Add Unlisted or Updated Printers dialog box and
  90.     press [Enter].  If you are asked whether or not to install
  91.     the new HPPCL5E3.DLL file, press the Yes button to
  92.     continue the installation.
  93. 8.  Choose Connect.
  94. 9.  Highlight the correct printer port from the Ports list box
  95.     and press [Enter].
  96. 10. Choose Setup.
  97. 11. Make any necessary changes in the Printer Setup screen to 
  98.     reflect your printer's configuration.
  99. 12. Choose OK.
  100. 13. Choose Set as Default Printer.

  105. FEATURES OF HEWLETT-PACKARD HPPCL5E PRINTER DRIVER

  109. The Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E Printer Driver version V1.20 includes 
  110. support for the HP LaserJet 4/4M, 4L, 4ML & 4Si/4Si MX printers 
  111. and the following new features:
  112.  
  113. Support for Graphics Quality.
  114.  
  115.     For the LaserJet 4/4M and 4Si/4Si MX, at 600 dpi mode the 
  116.     driver supports 600, 300, and 150 dpi.  For the LaserJet 4/4M,
  117.     4L, 4ML, and 4Si/4Si MX, at 300 dpi mode the driver supports 300,
  118.     150, and 75 dpi. The actual graphics resolution settings are 
  119.     denoted by the descriptive terms of Low, Medium, and High 
  120.     rather than the actual dpi.

  122. Support for the internal Intellifont typefaces.
  123.     All the internal Intellifont typefaces in the HP LaserJet 
  124.     4/4M, 4L, 4ML, and 4Si/4Si MX printers are supported in the 19U 
  125.     symbol set.  To obtain WYSIWYG results, use HP Intellifont 
  126.     which supports on-the-fly screen fonts to match your printer 
  127.     fonts in Windows 3.1.

  129. Support for HP-GL/2
  130.     Support for HP-GL/2 is in the HPPCL5E driver.  Under the 
  131.     Options Dialog in the Printer Setup, an option of "Graphics 
  132.     Mode" is available.  Two options are present:  HP-GL/2 or
  133.     Raster.   The first choice enables HP-GL/2 which will 
  134.     increase print performance.  The second choice uses raster 
  135.     only.  The default graphics mode is set to raster for the
  136.     HP LaserJet 4L.  The default mode is set to HP-GL/2 
  137.     for the HP LaserJet 4/4M, 4ML, and 4Si/4Si MX.

  139.     For the HP LaserJet 4/4M, 4ML, and 4Si/4Si MX, if you encounter 
  140.     print difficulties in the default Graphics Mode, it is 
  141.     recommended that you change the mode to Raster and try your 
  142.     print job again. Additional information on this topic may be 
  143.     found in the help files that accompany this driver.  Choose 
  144.     Help from the driver dialog screens or the HP font installer 
  145.     screens to access the HELP information.

  147. Support for EconoMode (Supported by the LaserJet 4L and 4ML) 
  148.     Support for EconoMode is in version V1.20 within the 
  149.     Options Dialog.  There are two options available, on 
  150.     or off.  With EconoMode enabled the output will resemble
  151.     draft mode, using fewer dots in order to conserve toner.

  153. Support for Print Density (Supported by the LaserJet 4L and 4ML) 
  154.     Print density support is provided in the Options Dialog.  
  155.     Adjust the density of the printer according to the desired 
  156.     density.  The density range is one (lightest) to five 
  157.     (darkest).

  159. Dialog Support for REt
  160.     Another feature added to the Option Dialog is the REt
  161.     (Resolution Enhancement technology) box.  The options here
  162.     are:  
  163.        Light, Medium, Dark, and Off for the HP LaserJet 4L and 4ML.
  164.        Printer Default, Light, Medium, Dark, and Off for the HP
  165.      LaserJet 4/4M.
  166.        Printer Default, ON, and OFF for the LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX.

  168. Dialog Support for Resource Saving (Supported only by LaserJet 
  169.     4Si/4Si MX)
  170.     This feature, added to the main setup dialog box, allows the
  171.     user to tell the printer driver how much memory is set aside
  172.     for the each printer personality (PCL and PostScript). 
  173.     This memory is used for saving printer resources between 
  174.     printer language switching. The range is from 0KB to 99900KB.
  175.  
  176. Version Information Resources
  177.     This feature, added to the printer driver and its dynamic link
  178.     libraries, helps eliminate a possible mismatch of driver and
  179.     driver resource files when installing previous drivers.  If
  180.     a potential mismatch is detected during driver installation,
  181.     a dialogue box that contains a warning is displayed.
