A Mauve Start-up screen should appear when the CD is inserted into the drive.
If it does not, Windows' Autorun feature may be turned off on your computer.
If this is the case, you can either
- go to "My Computer" and double-click on the Mauve CD-ROM icon.
or - go to Start/Run and type D:\Mauve95 ("D:" being your CD-ROM drive).
***MAUVE WILL NOT START unless:***
1. Your monitor is set to run at High Color (thousands of colors, 16-bit).
2. Version 2.1.2.59 or later of QuickTime for Windows is installed.
To set the monitor at High Color, go to Start/Settings/Control
Panel/Display/Settings and change the Color Palette. You may have to restart your computer. Do so, unless you need to install QuickTime.
To install QuickTime, launch the installer "qteasy32.exe" in the QTIME folder on the CD-ROM. Go to Start/Run and type :\QTIME\QTEASY32.EXE ("D:" being your CD-ROM drive). If asked, delete the previous version and restart your computer.

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
==================
Mauve makes extensive use of two key features of multimedia technology: mouse clicks and videos. Mauve relies on Director 6 from Macromedia and QuickTime from Apple Computer to implement these technologies. The effectiveness of these technologies depends in large part on the power of the system being used and on the userÆs ability to refrain from clicking the mouse needlessly.
As a general rule of thumb, the performance of Mauve improves on faster and more powerful systems. Playing Mauve on a system with the minimum requirements can result in:
- slow loading times,
- various screen artefacts,
- missing or choppy sound, and
- unopened files.
Patience is a virtue if you have a slow machine. Excessive clicking can overload the system with conflicting commands which it doesnÆt have time to process. This is usually what has happened when the system hangs while you are using Mauve.

AUDIO AND VIDEO PROBLEMS
========================
Whenever a QuickTime video plays, Director 6 has to load and unload various sounds and graphics while QuickTime manages the video playback, which means that it must display images at a rate of 15 frames per second. During this time, it is also ensuring that the sound coming out of the speakers is in sync with the images. QuickTime must accomplish these tasks while managing the different combinations of video and audio cards that can be found in PCÆs today.
Mauve freezes or video is out of place.
QuickTime may have problems identifying your video card. Changing the QuickTime video optimization/draw method might improve performance. Go to Control Panel / QuickTime 32 / More / Video Tab / Draw Method, select Bitmap (BMP) or Window's Bitmap (DIB) and apply settings. If this does not work, try getting updated video drivers from the manufacturer.
There is no sound.
First make sure that the speakers are plugged in and turned on and that they are not muted. Double-click on the speaker in the Bottom right hand corner of the screen to access mixer controls. You can test WAV audio by going to Control Panel / Sounds.
Videos jump, skip or are out-of-sync.
QuickTime could also have problems with your audio card. You will have to experiment with different settings in the QuickTime Control Panel. Some audio soundcards have reported problems with QuickTime 2.1.2.59 (32-bit).

MISCELLANEOUS
=============
Multitasking is not recommended. Please quit other applications before running Mauve. Screen savers and some energy saving features, if activated at an improper moment, might interfere with MauveÆs operation. If your system is constantly hanging, disable all screen savers and energy-saving features.
Mauve does not copy any files to your system, but Windows stores some temporary files in the C:\Windows\Temp directory. If you get persistent errors running Mauve, please delete these temporary files.
Re-installing QuickTime may also repair damaged files or fix errors.
