  10.  This program automatically updates Norton AntiVirus with the latest 
  11.  virus definitions. It automatically searches for Norton AntiVirus on 
  12.  your computer and updates the necessary files.

  40. Installation Files and Disk Sets
  41. =====================================================================
  42.  
  43.  The Intelligent Updater installation disks or CD contains several  
  44.  executable files. The filenames change from week to week. They show 
  45.  the month (mm) and day (dd) that the definitions were released.
  46.

  93.                   This is a large file for administrators who update 
  94.                   multiple versions of Norton AntiVirus. For more
  95.                   information, refer to the .txt files that come 
  96.                   with this program. It is not available on floppy 
  97.                   disk.

  100.                   for Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha 
  101.                   version.

  105. I. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95
  106. =====================================================================
  107.  
  108.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  109.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  110.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions 
  111.  of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause it to report false virus 
  112.  detections. To see which version you are using, click Help on the 
  113.  Norton AntiVirus menu bar. Then select About Norton AntiVirus. 
  114.  
  115.  Norton AntiVirus 2.0 users should be using version 2.01. If you need 
  116.  to update Norton AntiVirus, the patch filename is NAV95201.EXE.
  117.  
  118.  This patch is available on the Symantec BBS (541-484-6669), the 
  119.  Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec 
  120.  Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  121.  CompuServe, or America Online.
  122.  
  123.  Download or copy the patch file to a temporary directory and run it 
  124.  to extract the necessary files. Then click Setup to begin the 
  125.  installation process. After applying this patch, you must update the 
  126.  virus definition set.

  128.  Updating Norton AntiVirus 2.0 virus definition files
  129.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  130.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  131.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition
  132.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  133.     December 31 definition set. 
  134.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  135.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  136.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  137.     critical files.
  138.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  139.     definitions.

  143. II. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows 95
  144. =====================================================================

  146.  1. Run the file mmddI32.EXE (or mmddI321.EXE if using the
  147.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  148.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE
  149.     for the December 31 definition set.

  154. III. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.x

  157.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first

  159.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus executable files (NAV.EXE, 
  160.  NAVW.EXE) to see if they are earlier than June 1, 1996. If they are, 
  161.  update them with the UPDATEME.EXE patch. 
  162.  
  163.  This patch is available on the Symantec BBS (541-484-6669), the 
  164.  Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec 
  165.  Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  166.  CompuServe, or America Online. You can also call Customer Service 
  167.  at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
  168.  
  169.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions

  179.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using Windows 3.x
  180.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  181.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  182.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  183.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  184.     December 31 definition set. 
  185.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  186.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  187.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  188.     critical files.
  189.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  190.     definitions.
  191.  
  192.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using DOS
  193.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  194.  1. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS. To do this, select Exit
  195.     from the File menu.
  196.  2. Make sure you have a temporary directory on your system that you 
  197.     can use to unload the virus definitions. Set this directory in 
  198.     DOS using the SET command. For example, type SET TEMP=C:\TEMP if 
  199.     the temporary directory is C:\TEMP. 
  200.  3. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  201.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  202.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  203.     December 31 definition set. 
  204.  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  205.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  206.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  207.     critical files.
  208.  6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  209.     definitions.

  211.  Troubleshooting
  212.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  213.  If the VIRSCAN.ZIP files are not deleted after a failed or 
  214.  cancelled attempt at updating the virus definitions, they can cause 
  215.  errors when running the Intelligent Updater program. To prevent 
  216.  these types of errors, make sure that the temporary directory is 
  217.  empty before starting the update.
  218.

  221. IV. NT Tools, NT Scanner and Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT
  222. =====================================================================
  223.  
  224.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  225.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  226.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  227.     December 31 definition set. 
  228.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  229.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot

  237. V. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows NT

  242.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the 
  243.     December 31 definition set.

  248. VI. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
  249. =====================================================================
  250.  
  251.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  252.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  253.  If your version of NAV 2.0 for NetWare is dated earlier than 
  254.  December 13, 1995, you must upgrade your software before updating 
  255.  the virus definition files. The newer releases of Norton AntiVirus 
  256.  for NetWare v2 detect and remove Microsoft Word and Excel macro 
  257.  viruses. For information on how to receive the update, call Customer 
  258.  Service at (800) 441-7234.
  259.  
  260.  To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definition files: 
  261.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  262.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  263.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for Netware is 
  264.     installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  265.     drive.
  266.  2. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. To do this, select
  267.     DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for 
  268.     NetWare Windows configuration window. Or, you can press F3 at the 
  269.     NAVNLM server console screen.
  270.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  271.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  272.  3. From a DOS prompt, type mmddN16.EXE [path] (or mmddN161.EXE 
  273.     [path] if using the multi-file floppy disk set) where the [path]
  274.     is the location you mapped in step 1. The mmdd represents the
  275.     date of the definition set. For example, the filename would be
  276.     1231N16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  277.  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  278.  7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. Choose ENABLE NLM 
  279.     from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows 
  280.     configuration window. Or, you can press F2 at the NAVNLM server 
  281.     console screen.
  282.  8. If you created a temporary drive mapping, delete it.
  283.  
  284.

  286. VII. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for NetWare
  287. =====================================================================
  288.  
  289.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to

  312. VIII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  313. =====================================================================

  317.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager executable 
  318.  file (NAVNET.EXE) to see if it is earlier than June 1, 1996. If it

  333.  NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory. Then run 
  334.  UPDATEME.EXE to extract the files. The complete directions are 
  335.  explained in the READ.ME file. 
  336.  
  337.  After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, recreate your .NNS 
  338.  files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template. For more information 
  339.  on recreating .NNS files, order FaxBack #913024 from our free 
  340.  FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  341.  
  342.  The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set. You
  343.  must apply the latest virus definition set update after completing
  344.  the program update.
  345.  
  346.  Updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions
  347.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  348.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  349.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  350.     is installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  351.     drive.
  352.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  353.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  354.  3. Type mmddI16.EXE [path] (or mmddI161.EXE [path] if using the
  355.     multi-disk floppy disk set) where the [path] is the location of
  356.     the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager that you just mapped. The
  357.     mmdd represents the date of the definition set. For example, the
  358.     filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  359.  4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  360.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  361.     directory and scan the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory 
  362.     to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild critical files. 
  363.     To do this, type NAV from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  364.     directory.
  365.  
  366.  
  367. =====================================================================
  368. IX. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager for Win95 and WinNT
  369. =====================================================================
  370.  
  371.  Installing the definitions for Network Manager involves three steps.
  372.    1. Find the directory where virus definitions are stored.
  373.    2. Copy the appropriate Intelligent Updater program to that 
  374.       directory.
  375.    3. Run the Intelligent Updater program using the /dump command to 
  376.       extract the appropriate files.
  377.  
  378.  Locating the Definitions Directory
  379.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  380.  1. Find the .NNS file that Norton AntiVirus uses to distribute 
  381.     files. To find out which .NNS file the network uses, check the 
  382.     network login script. If it uses a customized .NNS file, the 
  383.     login script will specify the location of that file. If not, 
  384.     search the login script for the location of the NAVCHECK.EXE and 
  385.     NAV32UP.EXE distribution files. The default .NNS file 
  386.     (_DEFLT32.NNS) will be in the directory containing NAVCHECK.EXE 
  387.     and NAV32UP.EXE.
  388.  2. Look in the .NNS file for the parameter that points to the virus 
  389.     definitions directory. 
  390.       * In NavNet32 v2.0, the parameter "NAVDefDir" points to 
  391.         the definitions. 
  392.       * In NavNet32 v4.x, the parameter "NAVDefDir95" points to the 
  393.         Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 definitions. The parameter 
  394.         "NAVDefDirNTWKS" points to the Norton AntiVirus for NT 
  395.         workstation definitions, and "NAVDefDirNTSRV" points to the 
  396.         Norton AntiVirus for NT server definitions.
  397.  3. Note the definitions directory to be updated. 
  398.  
  399.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 2.0 
  400.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  401.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  402.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  403.     mapped drive.
  404.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI16.EXE file to the mapped network 
  405.     definitions directory. The mmdd represents the date of the    
  406.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE 
  407.     for the December 31 definition set.
  408.  3. Open a command line session (DOS box) and change to the mapped 
  409.     drive containing the older definitions and the new Intelligent 
  410.     Updater program.
  411.  4. To update definitions type mmddI16 /DUMP.
  412.  5. Delete mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE) from the definitions 
  413.     directory.
  414.  
  415.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 4.0 
  416.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  417.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  418.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  419.     mapped drive.
  420.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI32.EXE file to the mapped network

  432. X. Norton System Center
  433. =====================================================================
  434.  
  435.  See the Norton System Center documentation for instructions on 
  436.  distributing virus definitions with Central LiveUpdate. To 
  437.  distribute virus definition updates without Central LiveUpdate:
  438.  
  439.  1. Download the latest version of Intelligent Updater (v4.0).
  440.  
  441.  2. Copy Intelligent Updater to the definitions folder of your NSC 
  442.     installation. By default the location is the 
  443.     \NSC Repository\Products\NAV\Defs\Intel or Alpha folder.
  444.  
  445.  3. To avoid changing the job every time you update the definitions, 
  446.     rename the Intelligent Updater file as NEWDEFS.EXE and set the 
  447.     job to run this file. Otherwise you will always have to modify 
  448.     the job to use the correct file name. 
  449.  
  450.  4. Start Norton System Center and run your virus definitions rollout 
  451.     job. For more information on setting up NSC jobs, see your NSC
  452.     documentation.
  453.  
  454.  Whenever you want to distribute updated virus definitions, download 
  455.  a new Intelligent Updater, copy it to the source distribution 
  456.  folder, rename it NEWDEFS.EXE, and rerun the job. 
  457.

  460. XI. Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha version
  461. =====================================================================
  462.  
  463. 1. Download the file mmddA32.ZIP.
  464. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  465.    \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming 
  466. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  467.    definitions.
  468.

  470. XII. Norton AntiVirus for OS/2
  471. =====================================================================
  472.  
  473. 1. Download the file mmddO32.ZIP.
  474. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  475.    \SYMANTEC\COMMON\SHARED\VIRUSDEFS\INCOMING
  476. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  477.    definitions.
  478.

  480. XIII. Norton AntiVirus Internet Email Gateways
  481. =====================================================================
  482.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  483.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  484.  these instructions carefully.
  485.  
  486. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  487.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Internet Email Gateways" in the
  488.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  489.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  490. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /ieg". Remember the
  491.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  492.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  493.    for the December 31 definition set.
  494. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  495. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  496.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.
  497.

  499. XIV. Norton AntiVirus Firewalls
  500. =====================================================================
  501.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product

  527.  1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (mmddI16.EXE, mmddI161.EXE,
  528.     mmddI32.EXE, or mmddN16.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.

  530.  2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command. 
  531.     This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For 
  532.     example, type mmddI32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. The mmdd 
  533.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  534.     filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the December 31 definition set.

  536.  3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder. If you are using 
  537.     Norton AntiVirus 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT Server &
