(released 12 august 1999)
Hi everyone,
Here is my first GFA game...It's a kind
of tron-clone (yeah, one more) with
neat gfx (at least better than the
tron-like games I have seen on ST -
except for Ze Trace by Typhoon of
course) and up to 3 players at the
same time (1 player mode included)...
The story : At Wired'98, Eclipse
released a game called Viper (a PC
conversion of the old Amiga game with
the same name), which was a kind of
"circular" tron (ie you turn following
a circle and not a right angle as in the
regular tron). I really enjoyed this
game (probably because of its 6 players
mode !) and then I remembered that I
had coded a tron clone in Basic on my
old Thomson TO8 (8bit French computer)
some years ago. So I decided to convert
it on ST in GFA Basic. The original
Basic game was really basic (oh?), I
mean there was no real graphics, no
music and so on...Thanks to the relative
power of both GFA Basic and ST (compared
to Micro$oft Basic and TO8, huhu) I
managed to improve the game...
The problem that arose was that I was
totally unable to include a music...
At the same moment a small game was
released by Trantic/Depression, coded
in GFA and with music ! I e-mailed
him crying to help me and he accepted :)
I send him the source just before
leaving to Sweden for one year...Quite
obviously, without my ST there, the
game was put on ice during almost 12
months...I received the modified source
from Trantic during the autumn and I
was not able to use it before coming
back to France this summer...Once
home, I quickly fixed the last problems
(1 player mode, various bugs) and here
it is !
Okay, 95% of persons reading this have
found the previous paragraphs totally
uninteresting but I am one of those who
like to learn more about the story of
a lame game :)
I don't think the game itself deserves
a lot of explanations as everybody knows
the goal (?) and how to play.
Here are the way to control each player:
- Player 1 : arrows + joystick 1 (the
one using the mouse port)
- Player 2 : E/D/C/V + joystick 2
- Player 3 : 5/2/1/3
ESC enables you to exit to main menu
while playing.
Lombric has been tested on 1040 STE and
520 STF but I have no idea if it works
on Falcon or other Atari...tell me !
Anyway it is possible to change the
speed of the game for fast machines.
TROUBLESHOOTING :
If some problems appear with joystick 1,
(doesn't work) or even arrows, the
easiest is to reboot, to unplug the
mouse and to restart the game.
------
Credits for the game :
code: - exocet/jff (concept, main code)
- trantic/depression
(sound system, help, debugging)
gfx: - exocet/jff (main gfx)
- raptor (just for fun logo)
- sapho (blue face on main menu)
music: - unknown by me...probably a
famous musician though...thanks
anyway for the great music
------
Greetings related to this project :
- First I'd like to thank the Finnish
co-coder of that game : Trantic of
Depression as well as his brother
Perkele (btw that means something
really nasty in Finnish, isn't it?)
for having accepted to give me a hand
when I needed it !
- Hylst for his help and numerous
pieces of advice (especially the
"help-key tip") :)
- Gud and Puma Noir for beta-testing
and remarks about the game
- DHS for making such a great page on
Atari scene (that enables me to
contact Trantic)...
http://dhs.atari.org
- Everyone from IRCnet #atariscne for
beeing available to help me when needed
- Finally everyone who is still active
on ST, especially the main demogroups!
