  34. Due to minor changes, the tapes with a version number greater than 1.10
  35. cannot be recognized by GEMAR versions smaller 1.10. However, version 1.10
  36. recognizes the tapes of older versions.
  37. There will be no loss of data, they will be save on the tape. Nonetheless,
  38. such a tape must be read by new versions.

  85.     GEMAR is a shareware product, which means that GEMAR may be copied and
  86.     used freely by private users under the prerequisite that all data files
  87.     remain unchanged.

  89.     I'm sorry GEMAR has not all functions in the public Version.
  90.     In Germany most users do not pay for Shareware, so I decided to make
  91.     differences between the registered and the public version to get those
  92.     users to pay the fee.

  94.     Persons who use GEMAR frequently, must be registered and have to pay:

  96.     1.) Registration for $ 60
  97.  
  98.     2.) Registration for $ 180 for professional applicants
  99.  
  100.     3.) english manual for $ 20
  101.  
  102.     4.) updates from older versions than GEMAR 3.0 20$

  104.     Please take care for any charges for order checks, so these amounts will
  105.     arrive me!

  107.     The registered version has a few extended capabilities:
  108.  
  109.      -Image-Backups of non TOS partitions (OS9, Spectre, Minix ...)
  110.      -Batch-capabilities for automation of repeating actions
  111.  
  112.      In addition, the registered user will receive a printed manual
  113.      with a detailed documentation on GEMAR.

  116. THE REGISTERED VERSION MUST NOT BE GIVEN TO THIRD PERSONS !!

  118.     Right now the registration fees for professional users is $ 180.
  119.     Also available are special discounts for multi-users.

  121.     For registration, please use the menuentry 'Registration' in the menu
  122.     'Parameters'.
  123.     Enter your name and address and select 'OK' and then 'Register'.
  124.     The registrationform will be printed or saved to disk.

  126.     A commercial trade can only be done if a written permisson has been
  127.     given. This also includes Public-Domain discs.

  129.     After sending a 3.5" disc and an envelope with sufficient postage
  130.     you will receive the latest version of GEMAR.

  134.     Me, Steffen Engel, cannot take any liability for direct or indirect
  135.     problems due to the use of GEMAR.

  137.     GEMAR has been programmed and tested with maximum care, but I cannot give
  138.     warranty for GEMAR to be free of errors.

  167.     It is possible to adjust GEMAR such, that only the commands of the
  168.     corresponding streamer will be used according to the SCSI norm.
  169.     Just in case: If the streamer does not work with GEMAR, it might be
  170.     possible for me to modify GEMAR properly. Therefore, I would need
  171.     to have the manual with the SCSI-commands.
  172.  
  173.     If a new configuration file exits which is not according to GEMAR I would
  174.     like to ask you to send me the used parameters. With this I can also
  175.     attache the right parameter file so that not everybody has to identify
  176.     his new adjustment. Basically it is sufficient to send the file
  177.     'Streamer Adjustments' as well as the 'Data Rate' and 'Max. Read' from
  178.     the file 'Backup Adjustments'.

  181. GEMAR UNDER MULTITASKING:
  182.  
  183.     Principally GEMAR works under Atari Multi-Tasking Extensions
  184.     (MiNT, MultiTOS, MultiGEM, Mag!X).
  185.     However, Backup/Restore should never be done while another process is
  186.     running.
  187.  
  188.     There are three significant reasons for that:
  189.  
  190.     1.) Speed:
  191.          All available computing power is necessary to supply
  192.          data to the streamer and simultaneously read data from the
  193.          hard disk. For this it is completely unimportant whether an ST, TT,
  194.          Falcon, or anything else is used.
  195.  
  196.     2.) Need for Storage:
  197.          In order to carry out an efficient buffering of the data, GEMAR need
  198.          quite some storage. Only this way the streamer can be fed with data.
  199.  
  200.     3.) Data Protection
  201.          If another program modifies the data on the hard disk, while GEMAR
  202.          is working, a consistent backup cannot be guaranteed.
  203.          Hence, because of reasons of data protection no other program
  204.          should be running that may save, delete, or modify files.
  205.          As soon as there is a possibility of refusing an access of other
  206.          programs while GEMAR is working, it will be implemented in GEMAR.

  209. RESTRICTIONS AND KNOWN ERRORS:
  210.  
  211.     The english version is not english at all, I'm sorry.
  212.     Some internal Strings are in german, due to the concept of MAGIC.
  213.     Never mind, they are not so hard to read.
  214.     I'm thinking about a way to transfer the internals Strings to the used
  215.     language without changing MAGIC's concept.
  216.  
  217.     The hard disk software made by LACOM does not create Atari-compatible
  218.     partitions within version 3.2a. Therefore problems may occure during
  219.     Image-backups.
  220.  
  221.     A backup, stored at the very end of a tape can only be carried over to
  222.     another tape if the tape was saved with Quick-File-Access capabilites.
  223.  
  224.     Some users have problems with backups that have been restored with
  225.     Quick File Access (Seek). In this case the Quick File Access should be
  226.     turned off during the restore procedure. Unfortunately, until now it has
  227.     been impossible for me to reproduce this error, hence there is no
  228.     repair mechanism known to me.
  229.  
  230.     GEMAR should work with virtuall memory quite well. But I must say, that
  231.     this memory has to be located over phystop. With OUTSIDE it's possible to
  232.     add the virtual RAM below phystop. In this case, GEMAR's program-flags
  233.     should be set to 'Load to TT-RAM' and 'Malloc from TT-RAM' off.
  234.  
  235.     GEMA uses TAS to check the Semaphor Flock. This Opcode may cause Problems on
  236.     some Versions of the GE-Soft HyperCache due to an error of the Hypercache.
  237.     I cannot see a way to replace this opcode so on Problems with your
  238.     HyperCache please contact GE-Soft for correction.
