  4. This directory contains some sample images in different formats. These images
  5. have been created using several different applications.
  6.  
  7. The subdirectory JPEG Quality contains the image AIRPLANE saved with various
  8. JPEG quality factors.

  16. show the individual components in the AIRPLANE image converted to grayscale.

  18. These extensions are used for special encodings:
  19.  
  20. -rle : Run Length Encoded BMP
  21. -g   : Grayscale
  22. -8bit : 8 Bits Per Pixel
  23. -prog : Progressive JPEG
  24. -pass : Sequential JPEG encoded in 3 scans
  25. -f : JPEG encoded with fixed Huffman tables
  26.  
  27. In most cases file formats, in the order of best compression, are:
  28. 1. JPEG
  29. 2. PNG
  30. 3. GIF

  32. There are some variations in this ordering depending upon the image. Keep in mind,
  33. however, that GIF only handles 8-bit data. In cases where a GIF file is smaller 
  34. than a PNG or JPEG version of the same image, the most likely reason is the 
  35. difference in the number of bits per pixel. Several of the PNG images have been 
  36. been created using both 24-bits per pixel and 8-bits per pixel to demonstrate the
  37. difference.
