At the Louvre museum you can admire Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa," the most photographed painting in the world. Before its transformation into a museum in 1793, the Louvre was a royal fortress and palace. Built in the 12th century for Philippe Auguste, it went through a series of expansions during the next four centuries. After the revolution of 1789, the collection of paintings belonging to King Louis XVI was the first exhibition to be displayed in the museum. The Louvre now contains millions of paintings, sculptures, and archeological objects from all over the world, classified in seven divisions: artifacts of Oriental, Egyptian, and Greek and Roman origin; paintings, sculptures, "objets d'art" (works of art), and graphic artworks. Since 1989, a 20 m high glass pyramid, built by the architect Pei, overlooks a vast subterranean complex that includes a cafeteria, an auditorium, work areas, restaurants, and shops.
