Music Inventory Database
========================
What is it?
-----------
It's a very easy to use program to help you keep track of all of your
music, from CDs to 8-tracks, with up to 32,760 entries allowed. To
start the program, simply place the .PRG and .RSC files in the same
directory, and double click on MUSIC_DB.PRG.
For sake of clarity, from here on:
Words in [brackets] are selectable buttons
Words in <symbols> are editable text fields
Loading Music Records
---------------------
Menu Bar Option: "Load"
Key Equivalent: Ctrl-L
Loads record files from disk. If there are records already in
memory, you'll have the choice to either [Keep] the current records in
memory (thereby appending the new records) or [Clear] all records in
memory. You'll then be prompted to find the appropriate .REC file
you wish to load. At any time, click on [Cancel] to abort your current
choice of options.
Saving Music Records
--------------------
Menu Bar Option: "Save"
Key Equivalent: Ctrl-S
Saves records currently stored in memory. You'll be prompted to find a
destination file.
* Warning *:
If you select a file that already exists, it will be overwritten.
Adding Music Records
--------------------
Menu Bar Option: "Add"
Key Equivalent: Ctrl-A
Adds a record to the inventory list.
Options to choose from are self explanatory. However, I'll briefly
describe the options/limitations.
Rec #:
Displays the record number of the item being added to the inventory
list.
Type of Medium:
[Compact Disc/CD Single/Cassette/Cassingle/8-Track/Record/
45 Single/12" Single]
Only one type of medium maybe selected at a time.
Special Type:
[Promotional/Import/Bootleg]
Any combination of the above can be selected at a time.
<Artist/Title>
Use these lines to enter in the name of the artist and the title.
Either field has a maximum of 50 characters a piece.
Note: Both fields MUST contain some kind of text for the item to
be added to the music inventory.
[*]:
This is used in conjunction with sorting. If set, when sorting is
done with either [The Artist] or [Artist, The] selected, then the
artist field will be rewritten to "The Artist" or "Artist, The",
depending on what was selected. Here are a few scenerios to clear it
up a bit:
When adding records, some artist names you might enter would be:
The Beatles, Joe Cocker, The Doors
When these are sorted, it is done by the first character in the
artist's name. This means the above would be sorted like this:
Joe Cocker, The Beatles, The Doors
which is correctly done, except that no record store that I know of
keep their stock in order of the first name of the artist.
If the [*] is set on The Beatles, Joe Cocker, and The Doors, then
they would be sorted like this:
Beatles, The Cocker, Joe Doors, The
which makes looking for a group a lot easier when scanning thru 100s
of names.
When adding records, some artist names you might enter would be:
Hoodoo Gurus, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead
These groups would NOT have the [*] set, as they are perfectly fine
they way they are.
Note: On groups like "Edie Brickell & New Bohemians" or "Bob Marley &
the Wailers", the [*] must NOT be set, or when the inventory
is set, the names will turn out VERY strange (ie, like
"& New Bohemians, Edie, Brickell").
[Add More/Finished/Cancel]:
[Add More] (Default) - Either hit RETURN once the artist and title
fields have been entered, or click on it.
[Finished] - If you click this and the artist and title fields both
contain text, then the record will be added to the inventory list,
before going back to the main options. If either one or both
fields are left blank, then the item will not be saved before
returning to the main program.
[Cancel] - Will disregard whatever settings or text that you have
chosen as it returns to the main options.
Editing Music Records
---------------------
Menu Bar Option: "Edit"
Key Equivalent: Ctrl-E
Allows you to edit a record that contains valid data.
You can show ANY record in the list (whether it's empty or not)
by doing any one of the following:
- Editing the <Rec #> field. Type the number of the record you
want to show up on the top line and hit return.
- [First/Middle/Last]. Clicking on anyone of these will show you
the first, middle, and last page of records, respectively, in memory.
- [Up/Down Arrow Keys]. Clicking on these will either scroll up or
down one page in memory (which is 20 records). You cannot scroll
up past record #1 or down past record #32741.
To edit a record, simply click on the record you wish to change.
You will then be presented with a screen which looks almost exactly
like the one you saw when adding a new record, with the following
changes:
[Keep Changes] - whatever changes that have been made to the record will
be saved in memory.
[Delete] - will delete the record.
[Cancel] - will disregard any changes made to the record.
Clearing Music Records
----------------------
Menu Bar Option: "Clear"
Key Equivalent: ^C
You will be presented with an alert box, asking if you want to delete
all of your hard work from memory.
Sorting Music Records
---------------------
Menu Bar Option: "Sort"
Key Equivalent: ^T
[Artist/Title] - This will sort the music records in alphabetical order.
If [Artist] is selected, then records will be sorted based on the
name of the artist. If [Title] is selected, the records will be
sorted based on the name of the title.
[Do It!] - Sort the records
[Cancel] - Do not sort the records
Optional Sorting Items:
[The Artist] - This will change all occurences in the list of records
that are in the format "Artist, The" to "The Artist", if the [*]
was selected when adding or editing the record.
[Artist, The] - This will change all occurances in the list of records
that are in the format "The Artist" to "Artist, The", if the [*]
was selected when adding or editing the record.
Printing Music Records
----------------------
Menu Bar Option: "Print"
Key Equivalent: Ctrl-P
Outputs record list to either printer or to a file.
You'll be presented with the familiar list of music mediums and
special types. Select those which you want to appear in the output.
[Clear Options] - this will unselect all music medium and special
type buttons.
[Everything] - this will select all music medium and special type
buttons.
[Printer/File] - determines where the output goes.
[80/132] - determines the column length of the output. This was included
for you people who have access to 132 column printers [which makes
output look great!]
[Do It!] - outputs all records corresponding to the buttons selected.
Items are not exclusive when used with one another. (ie,
if [CD], [CD single], and [Import] are selected, then
any record that is a CD or a CD single or an Import will
be outputed.
[Cancel] - return to the main options.
Quitting
--------
Menu Bar Option: "Quit"
Key Equivalent: Ctrl-Q
Leaves the program. You'll have 3 choices before you leave:
[Save] - Save the current records in memory to a disk file.
[Quit] - Exit to the GEM Desktop [or shell]
[Cancel] - go back to the main options, as you're not finished yet.
Program Info
------------
Why did I write this? Sure there are "other" music db programs out there
(that only allow 30 characters for each artist/title field -- argh!).
I even used one for a while, until it bombed on me when trying to print
out the records. The I tried to run it in mono (a no-no). Then I said,
"Enough is enough..."
This program runs in either medium or high resolution.
