I. Message from the Author Welcome to the Word Translator! I am very pleased you have decided to review this program to see if it fits you needs for the registered version. This particular version of the Word Translator will allow you to the words you type from English to French (Shareware version does not have a French to English dictionary. you create!). I have decided to develope the program this way in order for you to be able to see how simple it is to develop your own dictionary. I have worked very hard on this program. I hope you find it useful. I have a much larger dictionary Eng./Fre. Fre./Eng. ready to be sent to you. To recieve these dictionaries, I highly recommend that you register this program. By doing this you will receive the latest version of the program, larger dictionary, serialized diskettes with YOUR NAME on them, also your name will appear within the Dictionary Status Window. In other words, register the program and you will receive personalized diskettes and program! Now, this program will be as good as the suggestions you send to me. The more suggestions, the better the program may become. As far as I know this is the only word translation program available as Shareware. The ultimate goal of this program is to be able to translate sentences, instead of words and phrases. This is still a long ways to go, but it will all depend upon the support and encouragement I receive from the users. Thanks for your support!! Rolando. Page 2. Main Program Screen II. MAIN SCREEN The main screen is divided into three parts: Menu, current Word Window, and Dictionary Status Window. The CURRENT WORD WINDOW always displays the current word of the dicitonary. The word that will be affected is deleting or editing takes place. You can change the current word by browsing through the dicitonary or by using the word movement commands found under the Word Editor menu title. The DICIOTNARY STATUS WINDOW contains information about the current or active dictionary. When the program starts it automatically activates the English dictionary. Thus the words ENGLISH DICTIONARY appears after the "Active Dictionary is:" text line. Other information appears inside this window. The CURRENT WORD NUMBER: and the TOTAL WORDS IN DICTIONARY: are displayed as well, this way you will always know how many words are in the dictionary and what is the current word number. III. MAIN MENU The Main Menu is activated by pressing the ALT or F10 keys. If you have a Microsoft compatible mouse, simply point at the menu title of choice and click any of the mouse buttons, this will activate that particular menu. By pressing the CTRL key and a pre-defined letter (A - Z) you can have instant access to the menu option rather than having to travel through the menu structure. For example, CTRL+A will activate the ADD WORD menu option. Word translator comes with a set of user pre-defined CTRL keys and they are listed below. Remember, at any time through the program you can change or eliminate any or all of the defined CTRL keys through the SET CONTROL KEYS menu options (Configure menu title). Page 3. MENU OPTION DESCRIPTION The follwing describes the menu items as they appear in the menu. TRANSLATE - ENGLISH TO FRENCH - This selection will allow you to translate words you type in English to French. First the English dictionary is activated, put into alphabetical order and indexed. A window appears asking for the word you want to translate. Select the TRANSLATE WORD button, after a few seconds, the translation for the word typed will appear. To continue on to he next translation select the displayed CONTINUE button. TRANSLATE - FRENCH TO ENGLISH - Please read the TRANSLATE - ENGLISH TO FRENCH menu option above. The process is the same except translation is from French to English instead. when translating from French to English the PUT ACCENTS button is active. By making ths selection you will be presented with a list of posible accents. Select the accent(s) you want. The accents appear at the end of the word. You can also complete the spelling of the word here. Select the continue button to go back to the translation word screen in order to translate the typed word. Another button available to both translations is the CLEAR WORD button. This button clears the word field and places the cursor in this field waiting to be filled in with the next word to translate. The last button on the far right is the CANCEL button. This button will end translation and return you to the Word Translator main screen. Page 4. V. WORD EDITOR MENU OPTIONS V.I. WORD EDITOR - ADD WORD - This menu option clears the current word dat aentry form and positions the cursor within the word field. Fill in the word field woth the word you want to translate. There are five more fields available, these fields contain the posible translations available for the word in the word field. V.II. WORD EDITOR - EDIT WORD - This menu option will allow you to edit the current word (the displayed word). The cursor will appear on the word field. Make your changes, if any. To save your changes, select the CONTINUE button. To abort or cancel any changes press the ESC key or select the CANCEL button. V.III. WORD EDITOR - FIND WORD - This menu item allows you to quickly locate a word within the current dictionary without having to browse through the entire dictionary word by word. The current word data entry form is cleared and the cursor is within the word field. Type in the word to locate. Select the CONTINUE button. After a few seconds the typed word and its translations appear. Now you can EDIT or DELETE the word. Remember, this is now the current word. If the word was not found within the dictionary, you will be told so and given the opportunity to select if you want to add this word to the dictionary. Select the YES button to ADD WORD or press the ESC key or NO button to abort or cancel. V.IV. WORD EDITOR - BROWSE - This menu item allows you to move through the dictionary one word at a time. The current word window now has five buttons: FIRST CARD, NEXT CARD, PREVIOUS CARD, LAST CARD and CANCEL. FIRST CARD will make the first word of the dicitonary the current word. NEXT WORD will move to the next word of the dictionary, if any, and make it current. PREVIOUS CARD will move to the word that is before the displayed word and make it current. LAST CARD will move to the last word of the dicitonary and make it current. V.V. WORD EDITOR - SORT DICTIONARY - The option will take the current dicitonary and put it in alphabetical order and create and index fiel from it. By doing this we speed up the search or translation process of the words in the dictionary. Page 5. V.VI. WORD EDITOR - DELETE WORD - This menu item will allow you to erase the word that is displayed (current). To delete the word select the CONTINUE button. The program will ask you verify your choice for erasing the word. The YES button deletes the button, the NO button or the ESC key will cancel the command. V.VII. WORD EDITOR - FIRST WORD - This menu option will quickly display the first word of the current dictionary. V.VIII. WORD EDITOR - NEXT WORD - This menu item will display the next wor dafter the current word, if any. V.IX. WORD EDITOR - PREVIOUS WORD - This menu option will display the word that is before the current word, if any. V.X. WORD EDITOR - LAST WORD - This menu option will display the last word of the dicitonary. V.XI. WORD EDITOR - GO TO CARD - All of the words i nthe dictionary is stored on an index-card type card. Each word card is numbered sequentially, according to the order in which they appear in the dicitonary. Making this selectin will prompt you for a number. If the numbert doesn't exist in the dictionary you will be told so. If the number exists you the word with that number will be displayed and made current. You should know that a word with the number 162 might end up with the number 146 once the dictionary is sorted and indexed. As the dictionary grows, the number each word card has will change. VI. DICTIONARY - CHANGE TO ENGLISH - This menu item will activate the English dicitonary for editing purposes and not for translation purposes. VI.I. DICTIONARY - CHANGE TO FRENCH - This menu item will activate or create the French dictionary for editing purposes and not for translation purposes. Page 6. VII. CONFIGURE - SET CONTROL KEYS - This menu option allows you to change or create the user-defined menu control keys. A box will pop-up with four buttons. Each button is self explanatory. Try it! You can't harm the program. VIII. QUIT - RETURN TO PROGRAM - This menu option doesn't really do anything. It is here mainly to accompany the following command. VIII.I. QUIT - EXIT PROGRAM - Making this menu selection will present you with the exit screen (sinilar to the welcome screen). There are two buttons: DO NOT EXIT and YES, EXIT PROGRAM. DO NOT EXIT will return you to the program. YES, EXIT PROGRAM, will return you to DOS. CAUTION!! If you press the ESC key, you will also be returned to DOS. If this happens simply restart the program, type WT and press return. DANGER!!! This should be the ONLY way to end the program. Using the CTRL+BREAK key combination or simply turning off the machine without properly exiting the program, places the active dictionary in danger of becoming corrupted. We recommend making backups of the dictionaries to another directory or to floppies. Future versinos of this program will have Backup and Restor menu options available. It depends on you and your suggestions. Page 7.
