  3. LANGUAGES AROUND THE WORLD

  6. THANK YOU FOR BUYING THIS CD-ROM.
  7.  
  8. This CD-ROM will give you a "total" cultural experience.  You
  9. will not only learn new languages, but also the demographical
  10. and cultural backgrounds of each nation.  You will learn
  11. new languages in a variety of ways: through games, puzzles,
  12. tutorials, databases, and more.
  13.  
  14. This CD-ROM contains over 6,600 files or 250Mb of information.
  15. This is equivalent to quarter million pages of double-spaced
  16. typewritten pages.  Million of trees has been saved because
  17. of CD-ROM technology.
  18.  
  19. The CW viewer on this CD is custom-written for this CD-ROM.
  20. It is easy to use and powerful.
  21.  
  22. The CW viewer has "see-thr'" capability to view the inside 
  23. contents of ZIP files without unzipping them.  
  24.  
  25. The CW viewer has been tested under WINDOWS '95 and run fine.
  26.  
  27. Depends on your system, you may need at least 600K RAM to run
  28. the language viewer under the main menu.  If you get "insufficient
  29. memory" message, simply get out of Windows and the main menu.
  30.     Then type: LANG   <ENTER>  
  31. To run the viewer directly from Windows.  See TROUBLE-SHOOTING
  32. section for more help if you still have problems.

  34. No installation is needed if you use our Windows-based Language
  35. viewer.  It also does not install any icon or program group in your 
  36. Windows desktop either.  Most people like this low profile feature.
  37.  
  38. Language viewer lets you see any text file (.DOC, .TXT, or .ASC) 
  39. and ZIP file.  You lets you unzip file to the directory of your
  40. choice.  You may not be able to see some foreign language if
  41. you do not have the foreign language version of the operating 
  42. system installed in your computer.
  43.                                   
  44. To start browsing, simply click on the LANGUAGE directory which
  45. will give you a long list of language subdirectories.  Click
  46. on the ones that you want to examine.  Click on any text or
  47. document file for descriptions of the programs.  A good place
  48. to start is to click on the .DIZ file if available.  .DIZ
  49. file lists a concise description of the program.  Click on 
  50. any .EXE or .BAT file twice will test run the program.
  51. Click on any .ZIP file will let you "see" inside the content
  52. of the compressed file.  You can also unzip the ZIP file to
  53. your hard drive by clicking on the copy to hard disk button.

  55. Most games included in this CD-ROM work better with a sound
  56. card.  If you don't have one and sound does not come out
  57. from your PC speaker, copy the game to your hard disk; then
  58.      type: ATTRIB *.* -r     < ENTER >
  59. Run and file that has names like SETUP, INSTALL, or CONFIG
  60. to change the system options like sound devices.  Some 
  61. programs have selections in the main menu for changing sound
  62. devices.  Switch the sound option to PC SPEAKER for sound 
  63. output.

  68. INSTALLATION

  71. We assume Windows is in your DOS path and that you will use our
  72. Windows-based language viewer.  
  73.  
  74. Simply type GO after logging on your CD-ROM drive to launch
  75. the operating menu.

  77. If you want to by-pass the operating menu.  Simply do the 
  78. following:
  79.  
  80. 1. If you are outside WINDOWS, simply type:  
  81. D:\LANG    <ENTER>       for LANGUAGE AROUND THE WORLD
  82. -- where "D" is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  83.  
  84. 2. If you are inside WINDOWS, click on FILE, then RUN, then type: 
  85. D:\LANGUAGE        then click "OK"
  86. -- where "D" is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  87.  
  88. 3. If you have logged in the CD-ROM drive and have NOT logged in
  89. WINDOWS, simply type:
  90. LANG         <ENTER>

  94. HOW TO USE THE VIEWER
  95. =======================================================
  96. The following steps to use the viewer are suggestions only.
  97. You can develop your own ways.
  98.  
  99. After loading the viewer, look for the directory tree window;
  100. click on the LANGUAGE directory; you will see a long list of 
  101. sub-directories with names of different languages.  Click on 
  102. any sub-directory, such as SPANISH, you will see another list 
  103. of sub-directories.  Click on any one of the directory will 
  104. show you a list of file names.  
  105.  
  106. To get an idea of the contents of the program, search for 
  107. files with the following extensions: 
  108.    FILENAME.TXT
  109.    FILENAME.DOC
  110.    FILENAME.MAN
  111.    FILE.DIZ      (the first one to "click" if available)
  112.    README.DOC
  113.    README.1ST
  114.    READ.ME
  115.    MANUAL.DOC
  116.    MANUAL.TXT
  117.  
  118. You should get information on how to use or launch the program.
  119. Our viewer also lets you to print out any text file on the screen.
  120. You may also click on the "FULL SCREEN VIEW" button if you want
  121. to read the text file in page-mode.

  123. To launch or test-run a program, look for files with the
  124. following extensions and double-click the file.
  125.    FILENAME.BAT         (batch file)
  126.    FILENAME.EXE         (executable files)
  127.    FILENAME.COM         (compiled file, executable)
  128.  
  129. Some programs, especially the ones that write temporary files,
  130. scores, or records, will not run from the CD-ROM (read-only media).
  131. Your computer may freeze, hangs, or gives out error messages
  132. like "path not found" or "I/O errors".  Simply copy programs to
  133. your hard disk and re-run program.  Refer to TROUBLE-SHOOTING
  134. section if you have more questions.

  136. To look at the contents of a ZIP file (compressed file), simply
  137. click on it and a Windows of its file list pops up.  You can
  138. view any text files with the viewer. But you cannot launch any
  139. programs since they have not yet been decompressed.  You can
  140. copy the directory to hard disk and launch program from there.
  141.  
  142. To switch to different directory, simply click on any directory
  143. that you want to see on the directory tree.  Then click on  
  144. any files that you want to see or launch.

  148. NOTES FOR VERSION 1B
  149. =======================
  150. There are no major changes in this version except that a few 
  151. programs that may have problems are removed and a few  have been
  152. upgraded to the latest available versions.  About 15 latest 
  153. new programs are added-- a few of them are games.

  155. Over 110 Windows True Type fonts and 50 postscript fonts are 
  156. added as another bonus.  
  157.  
  158. An index is added for quicker retrieval of information.
  159. The overall organization of the CD-ROM has been modified to
  160. be more logical and easier to locate materials.

  163. BONUS PROGRAM:  THE CIA WORLD FACT BOOK 1994
  164. ========================================================

  166. We have thrown in a copy of the latest version of CIA WORLD FACT
  167. BOOK (WFB) for your reference.  It provides essential information
  168. on 117 countries of the world.  This book is great for
  169. people who want to know more about the demographic and 
  170. cultural environment of a particular nation.
  171.  
  172. NO INSTALLATION is needed for the WFB.  You can use the
  173. language viewer to read individual sections under Windows.
  174. However, the language viewer does not have searching capability
  175. and run slower than reading it under DOS.  You can choose
  176. to read the WFB in its totality or reading it by sections.

  180. SHAREWARE
  181. ===========
  182. Some programs on this CD-ROM are shareware, meaning that you
  183. are required to register the programs after you have test-run
  184. or evaluated these programs for a certain period of time 
  185. (7 - 30 days, depending on the publishers).  Shareware is NOT 
  186. free.  It is a distributing method which emphasizes buyer 
  187. satisfaction by offering "try before you buy" option.  By "
  188. registering" or paying for the software, buyer may get the 
  189. latest updates, manual, and or technical support from the 
  190. publishers. Shareware differs from commercial software only 
  191. in the distribution method.  Quality of shareware is equal 
  192. to or better than most commercial software.  However, users 
  193. of shareware should register the shareware that they use to 
  194. ensure the continued supply of good shareware programs.

  197. PUBLIC DOMAIN AND FREEWARE

  199. Some of the programs on this CD-ROM are "Public domain" and
  200. "Freeware".  Publich domain programs are released to the public
  201. by the publisher with no requirements for registration or
  202. payment.  However, the publishers still owns the copyright
  203. of the programs.  Freeware are programs released to the
  204. public with no strings attached.  The public can use the
  205. programs in whatever ways they like.
