- \V VIE^'T
- CHANGES MADE FROM VERSION 1.5 TO 1.6
- ______________
-
- There are a few changes between versions 1.5 and 1.6. These
- changes have been made based on recommendations from VIE^'T's
- users.
-
- 1. TEXT ENTERING:
-
- There are now 2 modes of input. Mode 1 is similar to that
- of version 1.5, with only a few changes for easier use\. Mode 2
- uses the number keys for entering the diacritic marks. The 2
- modes are summarized below:
-
- MODE 1: Diacritic marks are entered as follows:
-
- aa = a( aaa = a^
- ee = e^
- oo = o+ ooo = o^
- uu = u+
- d\d = dd
-
- Note that o+ and o^ have been switched. This is to allow
- words like "thu+o+ng", "bu+o+'c" to feel more natural. Also, the
- keystrokes no longer wrap around (i\.e\., "oooo" does not wrap back
- to "o" anymore). This is so that words such as "bu+u" can be more
- easily typed.
-
- Other accent marks are:
-
- U = ho?i O = nga~
- CTRL - (or ALT-)
- J = sa('c K = na(.ng L = huye^`n
-
- Na(.ng and huye^`n have been switched to create an easier to
- remember pattern.
-
-
- MODE 2: Diacritic marks are entered using user-assignable
- keys. I have tried to arrange the layout so that the most
- commonly used marks are assigned to the most dextrous fingers
- (for a touch typist on a QWERTY keyboard), and also such that
- all vowel/mark combinations feel natural, to ensure faster
- input. The default layout is as follows:
-
- 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
- nga~ o+ ho?i sa('c na(.ng huye^`n o^ dd a(
-
- If for some reason you would like to type in a string such
- as "a8" and do not want it to be taken as "a^", then press the F6
- key between the 2 keystrokes. The F6 has a different function in
- MODE 2 (ignore left char) from that in MODE 1 (repeat left
- character, which is used to enter words like "soong" in that
- mode).
-
- If you do not like this layout, pressing ALT-F1 will take
- you into the keyboard installation mode, where you can change the
- keyboard layout for input mode 2. Any printable character key
- can be used (that is, no CONTROL, ALT, cursor movement or
- function keys).
-
- Once you have found your favorite keyboard layout, please
- drop me a note to tell me what it is.
-
- The F5 key switch input modes. Try both modes, then select
- the one you like\. VIE^'T remembers which mode you used last and
- automatically selects the same one when you restart the program.
-
- In either mode, there now is a sub-mode called LITERAL,
- where every character typed is accepted literally, with no
- interpretation. This mode is good for use with English, for
- example\. This mode is toggled on/off by F2 (color selection is
- now assigned to the pair F3/Shift-F3, and delay time to F4/Shift-
- F4).
-
-
- 2. SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT:
-
- The command CTRL-W, P (Save Parameters) has been eliminated.
- Now VIE^'T's environment is saved automatically when you exit VIE^'T,
- and restored when the program is restarted. Another ad\ded
- feature is that the text file name is also remembered, so you
- don't have to re-enter it every time you come back to VIE^'T. VIE^'T
- now also takes a file name from the command line\.
-
-
- 3. MARGIN RELEASE:
-
- F7 releases the left margin (works just like on a
- typewriter). This allows you to indent your text but still be
- able to enter headings which are not indented, without having to
- reset the margin everytime\.
-
-
- 4. Other keystrokes options have been ad\ded as shortcuts:
-
- Home = CTRL-Q, R (move to beginning of file)
- End = CTRL-Q, C (move to end of file)
- F8 = CTRL-P, P (print--on dot matrix printer)
- (use VLASER for laser printing)
- F9 = CTRL-W, S (save file and resume)
- F10 = CTRL-W, X (save file and exit)
-
-
- 5. Other changes:
-
- Some other changes are not obvious, but made VIE^'T even more
- user friendly\. These include responses to ENTER, ESC, BKSPC to
- certain questions; intelligent saving of the "Starting Page"
- pamameter (file-\dependent); deletion of diacritic marks, etc.
- Color selections have also been improved for VIET and the font
- designing programs, and selected colors are now saved
- automatically\.
-
-
- 6. LASER PRINTING:
-
- The module VLASER.EXE lets you print VIE^'T files on Laserjet
- series printers (all Laserjet printers and compatibles, except
- the original plain Laserjet, which did not have font downloading
- capability). The laser printer is expected to be connected to
- the computer's parallel port.
-
- After you save the file and exit VIE^'T, type "VLASER
- filename" to print. VLASER allows you to format the page and
- select from 4 different fonts. The VLASER environment is also
- stored automatically, so you do not have to reset every time you
- use it.
-
- 7. LASER FONT DESIGN:
-
- LSDESIGN works like PRDESIGN but for laser printer fonts.
-
