  11. The Bách Khoa Vietnamese Encyclopedia diskette is a tutor program aimed at
  12. teaching the Vietnamese language using a computer.  If you do not have the
  13. latest diskette, get one from your local Vietnamese Church / Buddhist Temple,
  14. because something big is happening.  The ability to publish your own
  15. Vietnamese story on a computer is every bit as revolutionary as was the
  16. Gutenberg press.

  18. Since the debut of computers, Vietnamese educators have viewed electronic
  19. publishing with envy, "A computer would be great, if only I could get my
  20. information written in Vietnamese on it."  With the arrival of VNcode, you
  21. can create a Vietnamese document using any word processor program.  VNcode
  22. stands for the Vietnamese code, which specifies the representation of
  23. Vietnamese for keyboard input and data file transfer.  To get Vietnamese
  24. letters with diacritics, you type the vowel followed by the VNcode keys
  25. representing the Vietnamese diacritics.  Your Vietnamese documents are stored
  26. and distributed in this VNcode format file.  A special VNsoftware program
  27. installed on each computer lets the user read a VNcode file, no matter what
  28. kind of computer it came from.

  30. Working together, the various components of VNsoftware can transform a
  31. Vietnamese document into a new type of computer file that is not dependent on
  32. any one kind of computer, operating system or software application.  When
  33. this document is viewed on someone else's computer, the Vietnamese font is
  34. recreated, even if that particular font is not loaded in the receiving
  35. computer.  It's a major step toward document interchange and for viewing and
  36. printing Vietnamese documents with computers.  Please read The Bách Khoa
  37. Vietnamese Encyclopedia diskette for more information about VNcode and
  38. VNsoftware.

  40. Until now, publishing has been the domain of large organizations that have a
  41. full-time staff.  No one else has had the resources to do it.  With the
  42. arrival of VNcode and VNsoftware, you can publish and distribute diskettes
  43. containing hundreds of pages of information.  Diskette mastering,
  44. duplicating, and distributing costs are very low.  Think of the library of
  45. diskettes that could contain documents particular to your field and your
  46. organization.  The real strength of an organization lies in the ability of
  47. each individual to leverage the collective knowledge, and diskette publishing
  48. is the tool that can allow that process to happen.

  50. If you have an interest in writing and publishing an article in your area of
  51. expertise, consider submitting an article to Bách Khoa.  Please type and save
  52. your article on a diskette.  Mail it along with a printout to your Vietnamese
  53. Church / Buddhist Temple.  Bách Khoa's goal is to use VNcode and VNsoftware
  54. to publish The Bách Khoa Vietnamese Encyclopedia electronically, where
  55. Vietnamese documents are entirely created, distributed, read and stored on
  56. computer.  We are doing it because we really care about publishing and
  57. distributing Vietnamese works.  And we really believe that this technology
  58. will foster literacy in Vietnam by giving people computers and software with
  59. which to communicate.
