- menu will be diplayed from which you can run all the programs.

- SUGGESTIONS FOR USING THE PROGRAMS
-
- 1. Read the manual. The manual is in a file called
-
- MANUAL.DOC
-
- This file may be printed directly to the printer using the DOS
- PRINT command or you can edit the file using your favorite word
- processor. Dotted lines indicate where good page breaks occur.
-
- You can read the document by typing the word MANUAL and tapping
- the ENTER key.
-
-
-
- 2. Select the menu item NEW USERS - READ ME FIRST and read both of the
- subsections. A brief introduction to the Japanese system of writing
- and to the KANJI READER programs is given.
-
-
-
- 3. Select the menu item SETUP AND UTILITIES.
- Then select SELECT OUTPUT DEVICE FOR SOUND.
-
- Choose the option which matches the sound capabilities of your computer.
-
-
-
- 4. Select the menu item SETUP AND UTILITIES again.
- Then select SELECT LEARNING OPTIONS.
- Answer the questions about kanjis you already know and your choice of
- learning options.
-
- YOU MUST DO STEP 4 BEFORE THE PROGRAMS WILL LET YOU TO BEGIN THE LESSONS.
-
- To change your options later, use the MODIFY LEARNING OPTIONS menu item.
-
-
-
- 5. Select the menu item KANJI STUDY PROGRAMS.
-
- Take a look at KANJI WRITING RULES-OF-THUMB and QUICK REFERENCE PROGRAM
- any time you like. They are reference programs which are useful even
- when you don't know any of the kanjis.
-
- To start learning the kanjis, select KANJI LESSONS. Follow the directions
- on the screen and use F1 to obtain help in running the program. KANJI
- LESSONS is an easy-to-run multiple choice quiz program, but it is
- quite sophisticated in teaching you one kanji at a time and building your
- reading vocabulary based on kanjis you already know.
-
-
-
- 6. Use KANJI LESSONS to learn at least six kanjis. After you know at least
- six kanjis, two review programs will appear in the menu (when you return
- to the menu): GENERAL REVIEW and PRONUNCIATION REVIEW.
-
- GENERAL REVIEW reviews words you have learned in KANJI LESSONS. Instead of
- selecting from multiple choice answers, you must "spell" your answers out
- in kana and kanji using special keyboards which appear on the screen.
-
- PRONUNCIATION REVIEW reviews the pronunciations (readings) of kanjis you
- have learned by asking you to read Japanese proper names written in
- kanji. (PRONUNCIATION REVIEW will not appear in the menu if you selected
- the user option of not learning pronunciation.)
-
-
- It is a good idea to use the review programs freqently. If is tempting
- to learn MORE kanjis rather than to review those you know. However, if
- you review frequently, you are much more likely to retain what you have
- learned.
-
- An excellent way to use the GENERAL REVIEW is to:
- a. Glance at the English definition.
- b. Think about the kanjis which are likely to appear in the answer.
- (Remember that for many words, there is more than one correct way
- to write the word in Japanese.)
- c. Write the kanjis on a piece of paper.
- d. Answer the question using the keyboard on the screen.
- e. After you answer the kanji portion of the answer, function key numbers
- (F2, F3, etc.) will appear above the kanjis. Tap ALT F2 (the ALT key
- and the F2 key together) to see how the first kanji is written. If you
- wrote it wrong, practice writing it correctly several times while you
- have the writing help on the screen for reference. Similarly, practice
- writing the other kanjis of the answer.
-
- This particular method of learning the kanjis helps ensure that you are
- learning to read AND write the kanjis.
-
-
- 7. Select KANJI CONCENTRATION GAME any time you wish. It is not necessary to
- know any of the kanjis to enjoy this game.
-
-
- THANK YOU FOR USING KANJI READER!
