-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Scan ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- When you press the "Scan" button, the Scan window is displayed. Scanning is the
- main and most usual function of Panda Anti-Virus. It checks your computer to
- see if it contains any viruses.
-
- There are two ways to access the scan. You can press the "Scan" button in the
- button bar or select the "Scan" option in the menu bar.
-
- From this window you can select the drive or drives to be scanned. You can also
- select a directory or even a specific file to be scanned.
-
- Panda Anti-Virus always scans files with .COM and .EXE extensions. You can also
- specify additional file name extensions to scan, and set the scan options or
- specify that you only want to scan the boot sector.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Drive Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Check the drives to scan. Use the "All" option to select all drives.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Results ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- The results report is a document that contains a line oriented list of the
- various operations performed with the anti-virus. This allows to keep a
- comfortable log of anti-virus operations, even for several program sessions.
-
- The results report can be accessed in two ways. You can press the "Reports"
- button in the button bar or select the "Results" option in the "File" menu of
- the menu bar.
-
- You can also access the results report from the scan process window.
-
- The report contains the date, time and type of each operation, as well as its
- scope. It also lists the results and incidences (e.g. indicating if viruses
- were found and where they were found).
-
- This file can be displayed at any time. It can also be printed and deleted. If
- the file is deleted, the next operation will be the first one logged into the
- new results reports document.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Virus List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- The virus list is an alphabetically ordered list of all viruses recognized by
- the current version of Panda Anti-Virus.
-
- There are two ways to access the virus list. You can press the "Virus" button
- in the button bar or select the "Virus report" option in the "Files" menu of
- the menu bar.
-
- Each of the entries in the list displays the commonly accepted name for the
- virus and its size. For more information on a specific virus, just press the
- "Info" button or double-click on the virus name.
-
- The detailed information contains: alias, country of origin, date discovered,
- size in bytes, if Panda Anti-Virus can disinfect it, parts of the system it
- infects and advanced virus characteristics.
-
- There are two ways to search for a specific virus: Pressing the initial of the
- virus name the list will advance to the first virus name with that initial.
- From that point on you can continue with the search manually. The second way is
- to go to the blank edit field at the top of the window and start typing in the
- virus name. As the name is being entered, the list changes so as to display the
- option that best fits what was already typed in.
-
-
-
- The following screen depicts an example of the information displayed when using
- the "Inform" option on the virus list.
-
-
-
- The following gives a detailed description of possible virus characteristics:
-
- Resident
- When executed, the virus reserves a small part of memory and installs itself
- into it so as to infect the system from there.
-
- Stealth
- This is a technique used by some resident viruses. It consists of hiding the
- changes the virus does to the files it infects. When a program tries to get the
- characteristics of the file that was modified by the virus, the virus itself,
- being resident in memory, intercepts the call and returns the data prior to the change.
-
- Encrypted
- This type of viruses have the ability to encrypt themselves each time in a
- different way when they infect a file. This precludes the detection of the
- virus with a string search. Fortunately, the virus needs a decryption routine
- and this has to be always the same. Therefore the virus can always be
- identified by its decryption routine.
-
- Overwrites
- Viruses that overwrite, resident or not, overwrite the file they infect.
- Therefore the file becomes unusable. The file size does not change, unless the
- size of the virus is greater than the size of the file itself. The only way to
- disinfect these viruses is deleting the infected file and substituting it by an
- uninfected copy.
-
- Polymorphic
- Polymorphic viruses are advanced versions of encrypted viruses. Polymorphic
- viruses are able to change their encryption method from generation to
- generation. Therefore, no part of the virus remains unaltered. This requires
- algorithmic search procedures for each virus "race."
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Scan Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This window allows selecting the desired scan options. To get detailed
- information about a specific option, just click on it in the figure below.

- displayed prompting you to enter an extension. Once done, the extension will
- then be added to the list.
-
- To delete an extension from the list, click on it and press the "-" button. The
- extension will then disappear from the list.
-
- The new extensions list (if you changed the original one) will be saved
- automatically and the anti-virus will operate with your selected extensions
- from that moment on and until you change them again.
-

-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Frequently Asked Questions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- What is the worst thing a virus can do?
- Undoubtedly, the most destructive operation a virus can perform is formatting
- the computer's hard disk. This means losing the millions of bytes that may
- represent the work of months. Restoring the contents of a formatted hard disk
- is very costly and sometimes impossible.
-
- Why do viruses stay memory-resident?
- A memory-resident program remains, to some extent, hidden from the user's view.
- The virus is hidden while the computer works and uses any occasion at its
- convenience to infect some other part of the computer and, in the worst case,
- to pursue its destructive actions. The main reason for the virus to stay
- resident is to infect more and better.
-
- How long do viruses take to reproduce themselves?
- It totally depends on the virus itself. In general, viruses try to infect as
- quickly as possible, but in many cases they only infect under certain
- circumstances, on certain dates or conditions of files they find. They also try
- to avoid infecting the same file more than once.
-
- How many viruses are there currently for PCs?
- New viruses are being created continuously and not all are accounted for. Of
- course, not all of them are sufficiently spread so as to be considered
- frequent, but anyhow the number of viruses in the PC environment is enormous
- and grows day by day.
-
- Can viruses always be removed from an infected computer?
- Yes they always can, if the hard disk is low-level formatted, and so are all
- infected diskettes. The problem is that frequently data in the infected parts
- of the computer needs to be saved.
-
- Generally, if an executable file is infected, it only needs to be deleted, as
- there should be backup copies of it. If the boot system is infected, it can be
- substituted for a new one.
-
- A file can also be disinfected removing the virus, but preserving the data in
- the file. This operation does not always succeed and sometimes there can be
- undesirable secondary effects.
-
- Sometimes the virus destroys data or code irreversibly and then they cannot be recovered.
-
- Remember that your best safety measure is keeping recent copies of all your
- important data and periodically scanning your whole computer with the anti-virus.
-
- Can a virus be manufactured that cannot be detected by an anti-virus?
- A virus can be made that is very difficult to detect by an anti-virus. This is
- usually due to the fact that anti-viruses suppose that a given virus always
- behaves in a similar way and especially that its form remains constant.
- However, new viruses are appearing that infect while mutating themselves. In
- this way they cannot be identified as known viruses.
-
- Can a system be immunized completely against viruses?
- It could be partially immunized. A complete immunization is impossible because
- a virus could always be manufactured that would remove the protections. However
- the task of preparing such a virus is such, that in general it can be said that
- an efficient immunization can be constructed for a very high percentage of cases.
-
- Can an anti-virus damage the computer?
- An anti-virus is a complex program. Under certain circumstances and if the
- manufacturer's recommendations are not being followed, data can be damaged. The
- possibilities of this happening are nearly nonexistent with Panda Anti-Virus
- and when there is greater risk the program will warn you.
-
- Older anti-viruses or those of doubtful origin can have this problem more
- easily as, in general, they do not know about the most recent viruses that use
- more sophisticated techniques and are more difficult to remove.
-
- There is also the danger of variants of know viruses that have changed their behavior.
-
- Should all extensions be scanned or only executable ones?
- Ideally, all extensions offered by default by the anti-virus should be scanned,
- as viruses only infect executable files. The option of scanning all extensions
- exists to give you the possibility of scanning all files, as there may be
- executable files with nonstandard extensions or data files that are really
- renamed executable files.
-
- We also recommend scanning all file name extensions when the disk is known to
- be virus infected and you are tackling the task of disinfecting all files on disk.
-
- What about files with strange dates and/or times?
- Some viruses change the date and time of files they infect, setting them to
- impossible dates and times. In this way, the virus tries to keep track of which
- files it has already infected.
-
- The anti-virus also offers the possibility of searching for files with this
- suspicious data, which is an important characteristic when looking for new, not
- yet catalogued viruses.
-
- However, there are other reasons why a file may have a changed date or time,
- without virus intervention.
-
- - It can have been adjusted by the manufacturer.
- - A user may have changed it with an utility program.
- - If the date is incorrect when saving a file, DOS will update the file's date
- and time with that incorrect one.
-
- Finding several executable files with changed date or time should be considered
- especially suspicious, in particular if they were correct before.
-
- What does the message "BOOT sector write" mean? The BIOS anti-virus protection
- The "BOOT sector write" or similar message means that a program is trying to
- write to the hard disk boot sector. This message is not displayed by the
- anti-virus, but by a write protection incorporated into some BIOSes, that can
- be activated and de-activated from the computer's BIOS SETUP.
-
- It does not necessarily mean that a virus is trying to penetrate the system,
- but only that some program is trying to write to the BOOT sector. The program
- trying to write can be a virus, a regular program like the DOS FORMAT or FDISK
- programs, or the anti-virus itself. Therefore this message has to be taken with
- a grain of salt as it frequently does not indicate a virus presence.
-
- What to do if there are errors during the BOOT disinfection
- In that case, use the /BTA and /MBR parameters of PAVCL.EXE
-
- These parameters should only be used when there are problems disinfecting BOOT viruses.
-
- Sometimes, a BOOT virus cannot be disinfected because the original BOOT sector
- cannot be found, because it is damaged or because the disk is reporting a read
- error. It can also be due to a faulty virus disinfection or to the original
- BOOT not being correct when the infection occurred.
-
- The problem of the original BOOT sector not being available happens also in
- other cases. If the problem is on a diskette, the solution is pretty easy:
- saving the files on diskette to some other medium, usually the hard disk,
- formatting the diskette and copying the saved files to it again. DISKCOPY or
- any other disk duplication program cannot be used, as it would also duplicate
- the virus.
-
- There is no danger in working with a BOOT virus infected diskette or copying
- files from it. You only need to avoid leaving the diskette in the drive when
- booting. At that instant, the virus would activate and infect the system, even
- if the diskette is not a boot diskette.
-
- There are some PAVCL.EXE parameters that allow overwriting any virus located in
- the diskette BOOT sector or in the hard disk MASTER BOOT. When being
- overwritten with another program the virus disappears. It is then replaced by a
- generic boot sector. This allows removing most BOOT viruses, even if they are
- not yet catalogued.
-
- These parameters are:
-
- /BTA for diskettes (/BTB for the B: drive)
- /MBR for the hard disk partition table.
-
