SUPPORT AND FEEDBACK FOR DING!
DING!
=====
Ding! defines an entirely new class of software called a People Browser (TM).
With Ding!, you know at a glance who's online and who's available. You can
then communicate with them instantly and directly in a variety of ways:
instant messaging, chat, file/URL transfer, and status bulletins. Ding!
finally gives you access to that all-important network resource - people.
In order to use Ding! to communicate with others, each person must have
their own copy of Ding! with their own WhoDP URL (unique identifier). At
this time, you cannot use Ding! to communicate with users of other instant
messaging systems.
KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASE
============================
- The final version of Ding! is no longer compatible with users running a version
of Ding! prior to Beta 3. Users of any beta version of Ding! are advised to
upgrade to the final release version.
- You will not be able to receive instant messages, files or chat requests
from a peer if you are behind a firewall that blocks incoming TCP
packets on port 2222. You will not be able to use Ding! at all if you
are behind a firewall that blocks incoming UDP packets on port 2222. If
you are unsure about your situation regarding firewalls, contact your
network administrator
- If you install this version of Ding! over a release earlier than Beta 3,
your pre-existing peer list and watcher / deny list are ignored under
the new user profiles. If you wish to preserve your peer list and
watcher / deny list, copy the files user.acc and user.viz from the
Ding! directory to your user profile directory. DO NOT copy
user.config to your user profile directory.
- When you minimize the Ding! main window, it will appear in the Windows
Taskbar as well as the System Tray.
- This version of Ding! uses and stores passwords on disk in encrypted form.
If you install this version of Ding! over a previous beta release, and
you select the option "Save Password" in the login dialog box, you may
initially receive an error message. Re-entering your user password when
prompted will correct this situation.
- Windows UNC pathnames of the form \\<server>\<share> are not supported
in the file send function. To send a file located on a network share to
a peer, you must first map a local drive to the network share.
- Copying text from a Ding! window and pasting into a native window is only
successful once per session. This is a Java bug and has been reported to
JavaSoft.
TROUBLESHOOTING
===============
- Check your connection to your network or Internet Service Provider. You
and your peers must be connected to a TCP/IP network in order to use
Ding! If you are unsure about the type of network you are using, contact
your network administrator.
- If you are unable to connect to your Ding! switchboard, make sure that
you have entered the correct WhoDP URL for yourself in the login dialog
box. You must enter the entire URL beginning with "whodp://", so that
your entry is of the form:
whodp://<switchboard>/<alias>
- Check with your network administrator to make sure that your network does
not use a firewall that blocks access to port 2222.
- Ding! includes a firewall testing application called Ding! Scope. If you suspect
that you are behind a firewall that is preventing the normal operation of Ding!
you can run Ding! Scope by double clicking the file runScope.bat located withi
the directory that you installed Ding!
TIPS AND TRICKS
===============
- You can change your nickname (the name you display to other peers watching
you) by right-clicking on your name and selecting "Info" from the pop-up
menu. Enter the name you wish to display in the "Nickname" field and
click "OK."
- You can see who has you in their peer list by toggling the Peers/Watchers
button on the Ding! toolbar. To deny someone from watching you, simply
drag their peer-icon from the "Watchers" group to the "Denied Watchers"
group.
- You can send a URL to someone by typing the URL in an instant message.
When the recipient clicks on the URL, Ding! will open it in their web
browser.
- You can prevent Ding! from notifying you each time a new watcher adds you
to their peer list by unchecking this option on the General tab of the
Preferences menu. You can still see who is watching you or deny people
who are watching you by toggling the "Peers/Watchers" button in the Ding!
toolbar.
- You can approve new watchers by default by selecting that option on the
General tab of the Preferences menu.
