There are two themes to Alpine Challenge, the 'Challenge itself' and 'Slalom'.
Aim of game (THE CHALLANGE - NOT SLALOM)
To survive and progress onto better slopes until becoming
champion. Avoid all trees and large rocks. Red flags are worth 20 pts.
Snowmen = 15 pts. Snowmen can also slow you down a bit. If you jump small
objects such as rocks and logs you will gain approx 80 pts, so jump them when
possible.
There are three different types of bonus flags available. (bonus flags
are the double flags). To gain one of these bonus's you must go through the
middle of the flag and rip it in half. If you just knock one of the sides
down the bonus will not be given.
The Red bonus flag awards you 500 pts. The yellow gives you an extra
life. The blue makes you invincible to trees and rocks etc and you can ski
right through them, but bonus's if ripped will still be given. If you gain a
blue bonus you can just ski right through the trees and rocks and your lives
will be untouched. This bonus only lasts for a short while. There is a timer
bar which indicates how much time you have left of the SUPER BONUS.
Screen Display
The playing area is at the bottem of the screen. At the top
of the screen are information displays. In the top left of the screen is your
speed. Below this is lives remaining. At the top right there is a display
showing how much time is left for you to be invincible to all objects - if
you have picked up a SUPER BONUS. Below this is a digital indication of how
much of the course is left to go. Your score and the Hi score are shown in
the centre of the screen. If You are playing the slalom game then these will
be replaced with your current time and the quickest time respectivly.
Losing a life
When you lose a life you will be asked to re-position your
skier. You should move your skier away from the obsticle that caused your
loss of life. You may position your skier anywhere on the screen. Press space
to re-continue the game.
Slopes
There are six slopes and three courses for every slope. For each slope
there is a password which will be shown upon you reaching that slope. You may
enter a password on the title screen by pressing the "P" key. This will
enable you to skip earlier slopes. During the game the "P" key Freezes the
game. Other keys used, instructions, hi-score table are shown on the title
screens.
Passwords.
You can proceed to later slopes by using the password system. When
you have successfully completed three courses you will be promoted to the
next slope and you will be given the password for that upon promotion.
To enter a password you simply press 'P' on the title screens.
The Slalom Event.
In this event you have to weave in and out of the striped flags
avoiding the scenary. You cannot lose a life if you hit any objects but you
will lose vital seconds. If you fail to weave in and out of the flags
correctly or you hit a flag then you will have a five second penalty imposed.
There are no different levels on the slalom event. The aim is to have
the best time.
The passwords are encypted very simply and with a little effort can be hacked.
They use the same encryption technique as 'Ace Crusader' (published November
1993 in Archimedes World), and also written by myslef, but coded after this
program. See History file for other details.
The usual (but in this case) short hellos;
Hi to all the Archimedes users at the University of Central Lancashire, where I studied, but finished over a year ago (Hoorah !).
Hi to Rob Wyatt (who was a Software Engineer at UCL), I see you finished Simon
the Sourceror eventually.
Finally, hello to Denzel Ralphs down in Cornwall, and congratulations on the
'First'.
About me;
Professionally I'm an Apple Mac programmer (Ok no hisses and Boos - it
pays the rent and provides the necassary Beer tokens), writing mostly in C and a
Database language called '4D' for the printing and graphics industry.
Wrote the game 'Ace Crusader' which appeared on the November 1993 issue of
Archimedes World.
Have owned various Acorn Kit including an Electron and Master 128 and I'm
currently running (and have been for some time !) an A3000 with various
additions.
Contacting me - as if you'd want to !
Unfortunatly I'm not on the Net (I will be eventually !) and my snail mail
address is somewhat transient so unfortunatly at the moment contacting me is
just about impossible - sorry.
