WELCOME TO SCIENCE ADVENTURE II!
Thank you for purchasing SCIENCE ADVENTURE II. We hope to send you off
on the greatest adventure of all . . .
This "README" file has some additional information and late-breaking
news that could not make it into the User's Guide, as well as some
important pieces of technical information that bear repeating here.
MEMORY REQUIREMENTS. SCIENCE ADVENTURE II requires approximately 520Kb
of conventional RAM free in order to run, and runs optimally at
approximately 550Kb free. Even when there is adequate total RAM to run
the program, there may be conflicts with other programs occupying memory.
If you experience difficulty in running SCIENCE ADVENTURE II under these
circumstances, please remove other memory resident programs from memory.
If you have less than 532Kb (545,000 bytes) of available conventional RAM,
and do not load a mouse in DOS, you will get an error message indicating
that there is insufficient memory available to run SCIENCE ADVENTURE II
because SCIENCE ADVENTURE II loads its own mouse driver, which is unloaded
when you exit the program. See "MOUSE SUPPORT" below for further
information.
LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK COMPUTER DISPLAYS. SCIENCE ADVENTURE II requires a color
VGA monitor to display its high-resolution images. It will not work on
the internal plasma or LCD monitors on many laptop PCs. Most laptops do,
however, have a connector for an external monitor, and SCIENCE ADVENTURE II
will work fine with your laptop hooked to an external VGA monitor.
SCIENCE ADVENTURE II will run fine on certain laptop screens, such as the
Toshiba 4400SXC, COMPAQ LTE's and the PC BRAND NB 486slc which have 256
shades of grey or color screens. The only problem will be that the right
edge of the screen will be slightly cut off. This is because SCIENCE
ADVENTURE II runs in the extra high resolution VGA video mode of
360 x 480 pixels with 256 colors and most of the internal laptop screens
can only show 320 pixels in width.
EGA, CGA, AND MONO DISPLAYS. SCIENCE ADVENTURE II requires a VGA color
monitor and therefore will not run on EGA monitors.
MOUSE SUPPORT. With the exception of the Magnetic Coil lab, SCIENCE
ADVENTURE II does not require a mouse. SCIENCE ADVENTURE II will load a
mouse driver if one is not already loaded. If you wish to run without a
mouse, you can type SCI2 -CLEAN and press ENTER to bypass this feature.
There are keyboard equivalents spelled out in the User's Guide which will
allow you to enjoy SCIENCE ADVENTURE II without a mouse. Please note that
while in either the HyperGallery or Doctor Zoom's Jail of Bogus Science
you must use the PgUp or PgDn keys on your keyboard in order to scroll the
text.
DIGITIZING TABLETS. Digitizing tablets are not supported by SCIENCE
ADVENTURE II. If you are using a digitizing tablet and it is not
functioning properly, unplug the tablet, plug in a mouse, and restart
SCIENCE ADVENTURE II. Your tablet manufacturer may be able to provide a
software solution to any problems experienced.
NEW FEATURES. SCIENCE ADVENTURE II includes a new parameter in the KA.CNF
file which allows the sound volume to be adjusted relative to the music
volume. Please note that this feature will work on the SoundBlaster Pro,
SoundBlaster 16, Pro Audio, and compatible sound devices. The original
SoundBlaster, compatible cards, and other lower-end sound devices will not
be able to utilize this parameter:
soundVolume. The default value is 100 (full). Enter a value from
1 to 100.
WINDOWS USERS. The SCIENCE ADVENTURE II icon launches a program called
KAWIN.EXE, which will shut down Windows, launch SCIENCE ADVENTURE II, and
restart Windows when you are finished exploring SCIENCE ADVENTURE II. If
this causes problems, highlight the icon and select Properties from the
Program Manager File menu and edit the Command Line to point to SCI2.PIF
in the directory on your hard drive where you have installed your SCIENCE
ADVENTURE II files. SCIENCE ADVENTURE II will then run directly under
Windows. SCIENCE ADVENTURE II will run well under Windows on most
systems, but some Windows drivers supplied with certain sound cards do not
release the sound card for use by DOS applications and you will get a
"device in use" conflict. This may be corrected in many cases by getting
the latest Windows drivers from the manufacturer of your sound device, or
by running Windows in Standard mode.
WINMATE USERS. The SCIENCE ADVENTURE II install program will not
generate a Knowledge Adventure program group and icon if you run
under Winmate - even if you said YES to the Windows question during
install. Manually add the SCIENCE ADVENTURE II Icon to Winmate after
installation is complete.
If your Tandy Sensation has a Sound Blaster or Sound Blaster Pro
sound card, choose "Sound Blaster" or "Sound Blaster Pro" during
install instead of "Tandy Sensation."
If your are running SCIENCE ADVENTURE II from DOS, you will not hear
digital sound during movies. If running SCIENCE ADVENTURE II from
within Windows, you will hear digital sound during movies if you
are using the new Tandy Sensation SoundBlaster-compatible Windows
drivers. If you do not have these drivers, and have a modem, you may
download them from the Knowledge Adventure BBS (see above information).
VGA DISPLAYS. If SCIENCE ADVENTURE II reports that you do not have a VGA
video card, it may be that you have a built-in VGA chipset, and will
require a software patch to allow the program to run. If this is the case,
contact the manufacturer of your computer for additional information.
ARIA SYSTHESIZER. In the Sound Blaster emulation mode, the Aria Synthesizer
may not provide perfectly synchronized sound and video on some of the movies.
DIGISPEECH PORTABLE. If you are using the Digispeech PortAble Sound
Plus, you must run BMASTER.EXE in your PORTSND directory before running
SETUP in SCIENCE ADVENTURE II. Your BMASTER files must be dated
August 1993 or later to support SCIENCE ADVENTURE II. If this is not
the case, contact Digispeech, Inc. for updated drivers.
GRAVIS ULTRASOUND. In your UltraSnd directory, type SBOS and then
press enter to activate Sound Blaster compatibility and during Sound
Setup choose SoundBlaster and Compatibles.
PC SPEAKER, COVOX, DISNEY, AND ARTISOFT/LANTASTIC. If you select any of
these sound devices, you will not hear any music. These cards use the
PC Speaker to play the music, which is subsequently of poor quality. The
music driver has been loaded, so if you desire you may EDIT the file
KA.CNF and change the music setting to On to enable the music.
ADLIB. If you select this sound device, you will not hear any music.
The AdLib card may respond poorly if both sound and music are played
simultaneously, so the music setting in KA.CNF has been set to Off. If
you desire you may EDIT the file KA.CNF and change the music setting to
On to enable the music.
SOUND SETUP. If you have difficulty running sound setup, you may
have selected the wrong sound card or you may have an I/O conflict
with other cards in your computer. See Appendix B, "Commonly Asked
Questions", in your User's Guide for information about troubleshooting
and reconfiguring your system.
USING VGACAPT.EXE TO CAPTURE GRAPHIC IMAGES. Because of the video mode
used, the screen capture program supplied with SCIENCE ADVENTURE II will
not work in the HyperGallery, Bogus Science, Mobius Strip, Microscope,
Pendulum, Pulley Movie, or the Movie Theatre.
ERRATA. The keyboard equivalents, <Alt-S> and <Alt-M>, for shutting off
sound and music, do not function in the HyperGallery and Doctor Zoom. You
may still disable the music temporarily by pressing <Esc>.
