  10.        This release note describes patch SG0001295 to IRIX 5.3,

  31.        This patch contains fixes for the following bugs.

  33.           +o This patch provides a new revision of the IO4prom
  34.             (4.19) which supports all Challenge platforms. It also
  35.             contains a new flashio command that is used to upgrade
  36.             the io4prom. The new flashio command contains a fix for
  37.             programming the actual flash proms on the IO4 board.
  38.  
  39.             This patch should be installed on a system that is
  40.             being upgraded to a new software level that contains a
  41.             new IO4prom release. In general, this means before
  42.             installing a major release of software such as 5.3 or
  43.             6.X.
  44.  
  45.             The actual problem fixed by this patch is in the
  46.             flashio command (SGI bug 366919). Usually when
  47.             programming the flash prom, the entire image is
  48.             installed without any problem. However, in a small
  49.             number of cases, the image may not program properly,
  50.             and render the io4prom image unusable. In these cases,
  51.             the new flashio command will retry the failed operation
  52.             until it is successful, or it is determined that there
  53.             is a real hardware problem.

  55.             By installing this patch before upgrading to a new
  56.             version software that may flash the io4prom (such as
  57.             6.2), the fixed flashio command will _p_r_e-_u_p_g_r_a_d_e your
  58.             io4prom.

  85.        Because you want to install only the patches for problems
  86.        you have encountered, patch software is not installed by
  87.        default.  After reading the descriptions of the bugs fixed
  88.        in this patch (see Section 1.3), determine the patches that
  89.        meet your specific needs.

  91.        If, after reading Sections 1.1 and 1.2 of these release
  92.        notes, you are unsure whether your hardware and software
  93.        meet the requirements for installing a particular patch, run
  94.        _i_n_s_t.  The _i_n_s_t program does not allow you to install
  95.        patches that are incompatible with your hardware or
  96.        software.

  98.        Patch software is installed like any other Silicon Graphics
  99.        software product.  Follow the instructions in your _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e
  100.        _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e to bring up the miniroot
  101.        form of the software installation tools.

  103.        Follow these steps to select a patch for installation:

  105.          1.  At the Inst> prompt, type
  106.

  116.              upgraded to a current revision.  If that is the case,
  117.              you will see:

  140.              It is also possible that the io4prom in this patch has
  141.              been replaced by a newer version. If that occurs, you
  142.              will see:

  148.              WARNING: The file is older than the image which is currently
  149.                       in the IO4 flash prom in slot X.  For  this reason,
  150.                       the flash proms have not been altered.  If you
  151.                       wish to revert to a previous version of the
  152.                       proms you must use the flashio command's -f flag.
  153.              ERROR: An error occurred while:

  157.              In either of these cases simply ignore this message,
  158.              and "continue" with the installation process. Your
  159.              io4proms are already up-to-date.

  161.              You may find that two patches have been marked as
  162.              incompatible.  (The installation tools reject an
  163.              installation request if an incompatibility is
  164.              detected.)  If this occurs, you must deselect one of
  165.              the patches.

  182.        reinstates the original version of software unless you have
  183.        specifically removed the patch history from your system.
