  276.             low-memory machines.  However, running this process
  277.             does make it easier to detect application errors, and
  278.             thus it is recommended that it be enabled if the memory
  279.             is available.

  282.             manager uses the index on the CD to produce the
  283.             thumbnail images, resulting in improved performance.

  317.             work well with the Indigo Magic Desktop.  Users
  318.             familiar with 4Sight who are not using the Indigo Magic
  319.             Desktop may prefer an old 4Sight-style toolchest.  Such
  320.             users can copy the file /_u_s_r/_l_i_b/_X_1_1/_n_o_d_e_s_k_t_o_p._c_h_e_s_t_r_c
  321.             onto either their private ._c_h_e_s_t_r_c or onto the system

  341.             _n_o_d_e_s_k_t_o_p._c_h_e_s_t_r_c.

  343.           +o Users who already have a private ._c_h_e_s_t_r_c should be
  344.             aware that they will not see the changes to the
  345.             toolchest.  The first time they log in after installing
  346.             the Indigo Magic Desktop it will get renamed to
  347.             ._c_h_e_s_t_r_c._b_a_k to allow them to see the new toolchest.
  348.             They may rename it back if they wish, possibly editing
  349.             it to include the new toolchest contents.  Alternately,
  350.             they may use the toolchest _i_n_c_l_u_d_e facility to include
  351.             a personal ._a_u_x_c_h_e_s_t_r_c.  The latter has the advantage
  352.             that future changes to the _s_y_s_t_e_m._c_h_e_s_t_r_c will be
  353.             picked up automatically.  Use of a ._a_u_x_c_h_e_s_t_r_c file is
  354.             discussed below.

  356.           +o The new toolchest includes a Desktop menu, which
  357.             provides access to many desktop functions; a Selected
  358.             menu, which provides access functions to icons on the
  359.             background; a Find menu, which allows finding many
  360.             system resources; a System menu for managing your
  361.             system; and a Help menu for accessing system help.  If
  362.             the file manager is not running with icons on the
  363.             background, the Selected menu will be empty.
  364.  
  365.           +o The toolchest now includes a window manager title bar
  366.             that includes the name of the current desk.  Window
  367.             manager functions may be accessed from this title bar
  368.             via the right-mouse button.
  369.  
  370.           +o The toolchest now has an _i_n_c_l_u_d_e facility that allows
  371.             including additional files.  By default, the system
  372.             toolchest automatically includes the file ._a_u_x_c_h_e_s_t_r_c
  373.             in the user's home directory.  It is recommended that
  374.             users wishing to customize their toolchest contents do
  375.             so by providing a ._a_u_x_c_h_e_s_t_r_c containing their changes,
  376.             rather than by using a ._c_h_e_s_t_r_c that replaces the
  377.             system toolchest. By using the ._a_u_x_c_h_e_s_t_r_c file, future
  378.             changes to the system toolchest will be reflected
  379.             automatically in the user's toolchest.  See the
  380.             toolchest manual page for a sample ._a_u_x_c_h_e_s_t_r_c.

  420.        The Transfer Manager that existed in IRIX 4.0 no longer
  421.        exists in the Indigo Magic environment.  The functions
  422.        served by the transfer manager can now be done directly
  423.        within the Indigo Magic environment:

  425.           +o To transfer files between machines, use the Remote
  426.             Directory entry in the Desktop menu of the toolchest to
  427.             open a directory view on the remote machine.  Then drag
  428.             the icons of the files to be transferred between the
  429.             machines.  This will only work if the remote machine
  430.             has the file manager installed.  If it does not, then
  431.             if the Network File System (NFS) is installed and the
  432.             automounter is in use, a directory view can also be
  433.             obtained by prefixing the pathname with
  434.             /_h_o_s_t_s/<_m_a_c_h_i_n_e_n_a_m_e>.
  435.  
  436.           +o An _r_p_c_D_e_v_i_c_e script is also available in the icon
  437.             catalog.  This script is similar to the one that was
  438.             used by the transfer manager to transfer files.  From
  439.             the Find toolchest, select Desktop Tools, then look for
  440.             the _r_p_c_D_e_v_i_c_e icon (which may be dragged onto your
  441.             desktop, or used in place).  This icon may be double-
  442.             clicked, it may have icons dropped on it, or, when
  443.             selected, files may be transferred using the Selected
  444.             or the right-mouse-button pulldown menu.

  446.           +o To transfer files to and from a local tape, double-
  447.             click on the tape icon.  If the tape is remote, the
  448.             icon can be found in the Find toolchest, under the
  449.             Search For menu, by selecting Tape Drives.  The tape
  450.             tool can also be invoked directly through the _t_a_p_e_t_o_o_l
  451.             command.
