When the sound waves from the mouthpiece hit the eardrum, they make the eardrum vibrate. Three tiny bones-the hammer, the anvil, and the stirrup-inside the middle ear increase the vibrations. These vibrations are passed on to the stylus, which also makes the vibrations larger.
Bell was fascinated that the sound waves hitting the eardrum could move the relatively heavy bones of the middle ear.
