ocr: - Wollowing the end of World War I and the dissolution of the Austro- Hungarian Empire, the Jewish community in the new republic became the second largest German speaking community in Europe. In the early 1920's there were over 200,000 Jews in Austria. Most of them lived in Vienna. Alongside the liberal Jews who were assimilated into German culture and mostly members of the middle class, there were many Orthodox Jews ofl Polish and Hungarian origin. A strong Jewish national movement was active in Vienna and was a dominant force in the Jewish community in the 1930's.
